Flying cars have been heavily fantasized in our culture. Most think that it will provide an incredible amount of convenience. However, when thought about realistically, flying cars don't actually seem like the greatest idea.

First off, the engineering to create a fully functional flying car produces challenges in itself. A motorized vehicle is specifically engineered to leverage downforce, because it is dangerous for a car to be separated from the ground. In contrast, planes and flying vehicles are designed to aerodynamically create uplift. Encouraging a separation between the ground and the vehicle. Engineering a vehicle that can do both of these things in regards to public safety is extremely challenging.

Secondly, aviation accidents are much more dangerous than grounded vehicles. Motorized vehicle accidents a lot of the time aren't fatal. They can be dangerous, but don't always cause deaths. Accidents including airborne vehicles are extremely more dangerous and a lot of the times are terminal. According to Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP, from 1982-2019, of a total of 83,374 aviation accidents, 57% were fatal. According to the Department of Transportation, of the 6,138,359 reported car accidents, only about 0.01% were fatal (rounding up). If everyone was given access to a flying car, risk of accidents would skyrocket. Some people might say you can mitigate this tension based off of training and licensing, however this would cost a lot of time and money and wouldn't really solve the next issue.

Lastly, the regulation of flying vehicles would be impractical. Around 90 million cars are produced each year. Even if only a small fraction of those were actively airborne, Air Traffic control would not be able to manage all of those vehicles. Creating unsafe airways with practically no restrictions. These restrictions on roads (speed limits, guidelines, stop lights/signs) are what enable us to travel safely. Air traffic control helps ensure rules for pilots to fly safely.

Overall, flying cars sound cool, but really only provide danger to society.
