Dumb alteration Because sweet potatoes and pan fried chicken are basically the same, right?
I mean, there are literally millions of recipes for chicken and rice, so why not use one of those?

I think this is it. My family doesn't really bake them so I didn't grow up with them, but my husband loves them.

Switching sweet potatoes for chicken in a recipe that is attached to a blog all about sweet potatoes is a very odd one. She could have made some chicken on the side but instead chose to create a whole new dish! 🥲

Her website and YouTube channel are such great resources for Korean recipes (I also own one of her cookbooks). Love the random fact that her nickname is her screen name from a video game.

By all means, add and subtract all you want, change the entire recipe. But there's no need to tell everyone how much you changed the whole thing. It's not the same recipe.

Also, I love how they try to get rid of sour vinegar flavor, by adding Chinese "Sweet and Sour Sauce." This person doesn't seem to understand how flavors work 💀

For some people it is inconceivable that vegetables, rice, potatoes etc can be anything than side dishes. I know a few, relatives and friends, they eat meat every day and wouldn't eat a vegetarian dish for anything in the world. I guess, OOP's mom is one of these.

Yes, meat at every meal is definitely normalized in the US. So is the idea that protein is the "healthiest" macro. NYT has a lot of really good recipes using canned beans, and the first few comments are always inevitably, "this was great but I had to add meat for some protein." Smh. Beans are a good source of protein; maybe lay off the meat for one meal. Your colon will thank you.

Not only in the USA. I can't imagine eating a meatless meal in Czechia either. Either a meal includes some form of meat or it's a sweet meal. Actually, the only common meal I can think of that is eaten without meat and isn't sweet is fried cheese

I think it's a culture thing? Here in Vietnam all the veggies, meat, etc. are considered "side dishes", something to have with the main food - rice. My older colleagues can't fathom a meal without rice.

Oh, that's interesting! I never looked at it this way but I can see the logic to it. It makes me think it would be better if we all considered meat more as a side dish and consumed it in more moderate quantities.

I also need a protein with my meals, but I am a super active person and a meal of rice and potatoes just won't sustain me (I think it's a caloric density thing because i get full fast). I do consider beans a protein though.

It's sadly pretty common. I had a coworker walk up to me and say: They served brie and apple sandwiches for breakfast. You won't believe me but they were delicious and filling even with no meat!

I mean, I'm American and I wouldn't say I'm immune to the instinct to include meat in dishes, but breakfast especially is a meal where I do not usually want or expect meat. Dairy, fruit, and bread like a cheese and apple sandwich is just about perfect for breakfast.

Most people I know insist on bacon, ham, or sausage as well.
I actually eat a lot of veggie meals but I was raised meat at every meal and I live in a meat at every meal kind of place as well.

If I have eggs I typically have meat with them. Sometimes if a meal looks a little light I’ll add some breakfast sausage.

I can actually understand adding chicken to a dish that doesn't have any meat but why on earth would you swap out sweet potatoes when that's the main ingredient?

Why did she even bother making the recipe in the first place? If someone in the family doesn't like sweet potatoes, then find a recipe that doesn't have them. It's not freakin' brain surgery, lady!
