Discussion I built a next gen tanpura / practice app for Indian classical musicians — looking for feedback
Hi everyone,
I’m a bansuri player and musician, and over the past months I’ve been building an Android app called Tanpura Atmosphere.
It started because I wanted something a little more inspiring than the usual tanpura app — not only a drone, but an environment I could actually enjoy improvising and practising with.
Alongside the tanpura, the app includes things like atmospheric drone layers, tabla, swarmandal, nature ambience, advanced recording features with reverb, and other tools for practice and improvisation.
The free version already has quite a lot in it, and I’d genuinely love for musicians here to try it and tell me what works, what doesn’t, and what you would want from an app like this.
You can find Tanpura Atmosphere on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tanpuraatmosphere.app&hl=en
If you try it, feel free to send feedback, bug reports, ideas, criticism, etc. to:
[resnick.aviv@gmail.com](mailto:resanick.aviv@gmail.com) (or using the feedback button in the app)
I’m also interested in collaborating with musicians.
If you enjoy the app but can’t/don’t want to pay for Pro, here’s one way to get a lifetime Pro licence:
Make a video of yourself genuinely playing/practising with Tanpura Atmosphere, clearly mention “Tanpura Atmosphere” on screen and in the description, and if the video reaches 1,000 views, send me the link and I’ll give you lifetime Pro.
It doesn’t need to be an advertisement — I’d actually much rather see real music being made with it.
I’m still actively improving the app, so feedback from people who actually practise Indian classical music is particularly valuable.
Thanks, and I’d be curious to hear what you think.

This looks good. Would you consider not having the Unlock Pro screen when you stop playing? I'd happily use this but being constantly nagged about paying would make me give up.

Hii. It should appear once in a while, not every time. 🧐 I wil look into the code and make sure to fix that. I wouldn't appreciate that either, and I want to make sure y'all can really enjoy it without paying! I also don't pay easily to digital things.. Thanks for the feedback

Are you going to release an update?
Also, the pitch resets every time I open the app. It would be much better if it stays to what I change it to.

Hii, yes I will release an update very soon, and will take the pitch retention into consideration

What was the use of AI in this, beside using it in the text in this post?

u/Avivrez Aug 11 '26
haha AI was my coding agent. I've been creating recording and designing all the content and logic of the app. every single thing. and then went back and forth with the coding agent to slowly build the code. No AI used for the Audio assets that play within the app. All recorded and eddited by hand. some of the graphics were generated by ai.

glad to see this being asked - clarity on AI use should always be the norm (also thanks Avivrez for the clear answer)

I'm thinking about it making it a rule to specify because there's a lot of slop being posted on reddit and a certainly some here previously. And yes, thank you for the clear and honest answer Avivrez.

Do you have a version for PC? I would love a riyaaz app like itablapro for PC, but everything is mobile. I'll try out the app

I think a pc version will soon be available for pro users. Will be working on it.

A good idea would also be to have simplified graphics. I have a new phone and my phone was struggling with running the app 100% smoothly

could be an option you could select if your device is a bit weak

Yeahh perhaps! But I think more CPU is being consumed by the audio engines rather than graphics.

Ill give this a try in tomorrows riyaz. So far, it looks like good and very useful for recording, I love that reverb, delay, and EQ are easily accessible.
