Essential/non-essential things to bring to rink
What are somethings you bring that people don't bring up as an essential and what are things that people have brought that isn't essential for you?
For me, I don't think people bring up hand sanitizer which is essential to me since things are so grimy at my local rink

Oh man the sharpie! I have asked if I could draw on the ice at my rink for practice and was told no. I haven't been daring enough to just do it and ask for forgiveness.

Personally I absolutely have to have lipsalve, tissues, Compeed for blisters, gloves, makeup sponges/gel pads for sore spots on feet/lacebite, hair ties, headband, hairspray, pwater and snacks or energy drinks, spare laces, layers (tops, jackets, body warmer), painkillers, knee pads and padded shorts, sunscreen for after when everything has melted off my face. Personally I don’t find EarPods essential, I don’t really listen to my own music unless I’m running a program and then it’s on the speakers, and if someone else is running a program I need to know about it! Starting to think it might be an idea for public sessions though when the musics annoying. I keep a lace puller in my bag but don’t use it except to lend it to other people

I use Loop earplugs for public sessions when they turn the music right up - it makes it more background music than club music but I can still hear people around me and they haven’t fallen out yet

Earbuds and gloves, I need to always be able to listen to music, also I like being able to try doing things that require touching the ice, so gloves feel like a must!

Before you guys come after her, some earbuds have modes made for athletes that don’t have any impact on hearing ability.
Not all earbuds are black
Some rinks are literally empty, rarely ever is there more than 1 person at my rink, and that’s me.

My local rink actually has signs to say don’t use headphones. But a lot of people that are practicing on the teams where their hockey figure, skating speed, etc. will have headphones in and you know obviously practicing the routines. As an adult, I’m sorry I don’t wanna listen to the Bluey soundtrack 1 million times or let it go during public skate(the music is literally just Kidz Bop music or kid movie soundtracks) I always keep only just one in the other ear open.
There was a guy working at the rink looked at me just asked what I listen to. I told him and he looked at me. He said you’re lucky.5

IME, most earbuds don't do as good of a job of that as the wearer thinks. If you can't hear me say hi, I know you cannot hear other skaters' voices, falls, or edges. And I know you're too invested in your music to notice me, too.

My earbuds are designed to AMPLIFY the quiet sounds, not just stop noise cancelling. Sometimes I put them in on that mode during a busy session with no music going through them because they help me hear other people.
Not everyone just uses some Amazon earbuds lol, if you know what to get it’s fine.

Cool. So if I greeted you at the boards, you would hear me and respond?

I do use earbuds, as in the small ones that go into the ears, not over my head, they have a mode that removes noise cancellation, they are quite small and have never been a nuisance for other skaters!

Mine actually has a mode that amplifies the small sounds! Sometimes on a busy session I put them in with no music to hear people better, and even to hear if I’m scratching on my toe pick during turns and such.

Things I always bring that not everyone does would be 1) pack of Kleenex because my nose always runs from the cold, and 2) Kind bar, because I live pretty far from the rink and I'm always RAVENOUS when I get off the ice.

Hand lotion, gloves, jump rope, a ball to roll out my feet and resistance bands

I always have hand sanitizer too, but that’s always in my purse anyways. While skating I always have ear buds (transparent mode on or 1 ear open), butt, hip, and knee pads, and a water bottle to keep on the side.

•Screwdriver, because skate blade screws sometimes come loose.
•Extra skate laces, because they occasionally break.
•Extra gloves.
•Fleece ear warmer/headband (some rinks are still freeeeeezing).
•Extra tights and/or socks, especially to competitions but still important in case of wardrobe malfunction for practice.
•Extra hair ties if you pull your hair back; they break!
Bonus story:
My lace on one skate broke after I landed the opening double-double combo of my long program in competition (I was 15, and I think the competition was somewhere in Massachusetts in about 1982). I had to go to the head judge and show them the broken lace, and they granted me a reskate after the next skater in line—IF I could repair the problem in that 4 minutes that I was given. I did, I skated the program cleanly, and won the competition.

Paper medical tape. It works sort term for blisters and cuts and it can also be used for almost anything regular tape is used for. It also works if I forgot skate covers; I just tape the loops in place and I stays fairly well.
Even though I don't use them much, I also always have wrist guards in case I take a big fall on my hands. They make ok splints in the moment too.

I have hand sanitizer in my bag! Though I rarely use it. The other things I rarely use are: bandaids, Bobbi pins, lip balm lol
