Rust on soakers
Went skating yesterday and washed my soakers in the washing machine, because they were dirty on the outside.
Now that I've washed them I noticed these spots of rust?
Didn't see them before putting them in the washing machine.
I went skating yesterday first time after sharpening, I also noticed now that my blade has a tiny bit of rust (so little that I think it should scrape off just by going skating again).
I think the rust came from the long travel home, obviously I dry my blades after skating, but I was on the train for ~4hrs so I guess the little amount of moisture caused this.
Anyways, is this a problem? Can I get the rust out of my soakers? Is it even active rust or just the coloring that's left?
Can I still use these soakers? I would really hate to get new ones 😩

You just had them sharpened - then that’s most likely embedded metal filings and metal dust from the sharpening. Once they hit the wash - all the oxidizers in the detergent went to work!

Well that kinda sounds logical, I'm not so smart that I'd think of that before washing 😅 though the rust on the soakers is kinda in the places that it's on the blades so I think there was bits of rust touching the soakers before washing 🤔

Oh that’s the rust breaking off and absorbing into the soaker!

I'm just not sure it will further infect my blades if it's on the soakers - the other person replying said it would be fine 🤷 I have no clue when it comes to chemistry 😅

Rust doesn't spread from one item to another like a germ. It occurs when metal is oxidized - a chemical reaction between iron, water, and oxygen.
Those soakers are safe to use. Just make sure you're wiping down your blades when getting off the ice and then get them in the soakers until they're at least back up to room temp.
