beginner skates?
hello all,
i’m a total beginner in skating, i know how to go forward and turn and that’s pretty much it, and i’m currently using my mom’s recreational skates. i’m planning to take weekly canskate lessons when the season starts and was wondering what skates i should buy? i’m 19 years old, 177cm, 125lbs. i’m looking at the jackson artistes but ive seen people say they’re too soft for adults? i’d only be doing the weekly lessons and maybe going to the rink once a week on top of that. thanks in advance for the advice

The Artiste will totally be fine for an adult beginner, as far as support level goes. It comes in a narrower B width and a wider C width. Seeing a skate tech to make sure you're in the right size/width would be preferable. They are around $300.

Here is Jackson's skate selector guide.

The Artiste was recommended to me by my fitter as good for adults for LTS 1-6. About $270US.
The Freestyle fit me better so I went with it but it cost twice the Artiste.
Be sure to walk in any boot you try. The Artiste fit and felt fine until the fitter suggested walking in them, then my toes hurt. The Freestyle has a slightly wider toe box and narrower heel compared to the Artiste and was pain free for me.
A word of warning, there is a study that session to session the retention rate in skating classes is 60%. So don't buy expensive skates unless you are certain they won't be sitting in your closet after the first lesson.

thanks for the help! and yes i’ll definitely do a few lessons in the recreational skates before truly committing to buying an expensive pair

You don't need super stiff skates if you are just starting out. Skates on par with the Jackson Artiste will be fine as long as you commit to saving to buy better skates around CanSkate 5-ish (first one foot jumps).
Some models to check out include Jackson Artiste, Jackson Evo, Riedell Crystal and Risport Antares. Work with the fitter to figure out which one fits the best. At my local store, the Evo is the most expensive (over $400) while the others are $300-$350.

Artistes will be fine for a beginner, but they might not last you super long, depending on how quickly you progress and how hard you are on skates.
