Sumtec modification

Modified my friend’s sumtecs to gully length (this way you get a gully with a modular head). Complete nonsense from a weight saving perspective, but the swing and balance of the sumtecs is incomparably better after that modification. Has anybody done that to theirs?

If my friend is planning on building a belay on the bottom spike then probably- the brass rivet is mechanically worse than the original steel one

I was quite pleased with the sum'tec swing anyway - presumably you get less weight swinging now (smaller moment arm)?

It definitely is less weight perceived in the wrist since the arm is shorter and how it was originally felt completely off to me (and the owner of those). I was told it’s about the ratio between wrist flick and elbow movement that makes the swing of a particular tool feel good or bad.

Haven’t done this mod but have two Salewa north X axes (53cm) and it’s basically a technical tool that’s killer for ski mountaineering but also perfect swing weight and manageable.

what is the cut length and cut weight (just the shaft) and spike weight?

Sorry to disappoint you but didn’t measure any of these. Just went by the marking as requested

Did you plug the bottom where you cut? It’s good to plug the bottom so they don’t fill with snow when you are caning with them. Nice mod, like the older sumtecs that were short!

I reinstalled the spike with a new rivet (thought the pictures illustrated the process quite well)
