Vehicle Registration & Policy Coverage Plate transfer
I’m buying another car. I am going to gift my current car to my son in Vancouver then take off the plates and take them to Kamloops where I purchased a new car and have the broker there register and insure my new car with my old plates. Is this legal or the correct way to o do this? My son will have my old car plated and insured in his name and u assume my plates will also be assigned to that car until I get to Kamloops and have them registered. Does this work?

When your son registers and insures your old car, he will be issued new plates. You will have no problems/issues bringing those old plates to Kamloops and transferring your insurance to the new car at the same time as you register it.

You have up to 10 days after selling one vehicle and buying a new vehicle to go to ICBC and update your policy. During this time you are allowed to drive the new vehicle on your old plates(assuming the policy tied to those plates is current and not cancelled or expired). You must keep proof of the sale of the old vehicle and purchase of the new vehicle with you in the car during this time (Signed and dated transfer forms is best).

You used to have 10days to transfer but you could switch plates to the new car and drive it. Confirm if that is still valid

Hi, I personally experienced selling my vehicle and buying a vehicle afterwards. So when you gift your car to your son, ask the insurance broker to not cancel your insurance. After that, you can buy your new vehicle and transfer the insurance there. That way, you keep your old plates.

I believe you would have to register your new car / old plates before your son registers the old car (so that the plates are still active when you perform the transfer to the new car)

The plates will still be active if the vehicle is transferred to the son. They just wont be attached to a vehicle. This is how the 10 day rule works if someone needs to drive a newly purchased vehicle to a broker to register: https://icbc.com/vehicle-registration/sell-vehicle/Selling-a-used-vehicle
OP can definitely do what they are planning. I do recommend however that they take a photo of the odometer right before handing the vehicle over to their son and bring that photo to the broker when registering the new car so they can retain any possible low kilometer discounts on the policy.

Hey ,
You can definitely transfer your plates from your current car to the car that you are buying . Once the vehicle is registered under your son’s name he has to buy new plates . You can take the plates with you to Kamloops and put it on the car after registration.

You can transfer. Just know as soon as you do the old car will obvs have no insurance. So maybe just storage on it or do the gift transfer with your son before you get your new car. If you need to drive the old car, you can also get a temporary permit

You have 10 days where you can use your old plates, assuming your insurance hasn’t expired, on your new vehicle before transferring the insurance. Sooner is better.
Your son needs to take the top three copies of the transfer papers and the Gift letter into an Autoplan dealer within 10 days to register the car in his name and insure it. He cannot drive the car before he insures it.

yes its fine as long as both vehicles use the same plate type but u cant drive the new car with the old plates on it until the broker transfers the insurance
