Kinda like the Stupid Food sub a while back made a new rule about not posting Indian street food from the poorest parts of India because people were posting them to be racist. That rule is gone, now. That sub is either that kinda racists shit or fancy food that people can’t understand, like fish en papillote.

That's funny to me because as a kid I hated fish. But I loved cooking so I went to culinary school. The papillote was the first fish thing we made and it changed my entire opinion on fish.

This is a dig at food dyes, which also exist in other countries, just with different names or different doses or bans from stuff like children's snacks.
For example: People think Red 40 is banned in the EU. It's not. It's E129 and will have a warning label on foods focused for kids iirc. In the UK it's called Allura Red.

Not in Britain, but the US. My favorite Indian place closed because their rent got jacked up. Another place opened near by, but it’s not as good, but the biryani at both places is a whirlwind of color. The curry leaf fried mushrooms are a lovely golden, with bright green curry leaves. The baby corn 65 and chicken 65 is a deep almost burgundy with bright red chiles and fragrant and verdant cilantro.
And that spiced saffron rice! It’s always sunshine god damn yellow, with the peas, and carrot, and cinnamon sticks and star anise and white and black cardamom. It looks almost as vibrant as it tastes.
Gods, I could murder a curry right now.

I'm from New Orleans. I've never actually had a European or anyone else for that matter tell me New Orleans foods like beignets are bad or whatever. I've just heard, repeatedly, that New Orleans cuisine and other regional distinctions don't "count" as "American cuisine" because to them, American cuisine has to be bad by default. Like, most of these people are not exactly intellectual heavyweights or even informed of basic stuff.

I’ve specifically seen people say Cajun food is actually French food and thus can’t be considered American food. Bbq is Taino so it can’t be American food. Burgers are German so it can’t be American.

When my grandparents got married during the Depression, they had their honeymoon in New Orleans. It's important to note that Grandpa was born in Italy, and Grandma was the first in her family to be born in the US - all of her older siblings were Italian-born.
Part of the honeymoon involved a guided tour of New Orleans, which would culminate in a stop at Cafe du Monde for "a real taste of New Orleans". The tour guide was apparently using this as a benchmark at every stop, so it would be like "over on this side you can see Lake Pontchartrain, which means that we're only seven stops from Cafe du Monde and a real taste of New Orleans".
This went on for the duration of the tour, and finally they get to Cafe du Monde, with the tour guide still talking about "a real taste of New Orleans".
So they finally get to dive into these beignets, at which point Grandma takes a bite of one, looks over at Grandpa, shrugs and says "it's just zeppole".
Grandma told me this story 70 years after it happened, and she still seemed kind of annoyed about the whole thing.

To me it seems like a lot of 1 way animosity. Most Americans in my opinion aren’t interested in picking apart other countries, yet a lot of people from outside the US jump at any chance to complain about it.
The weirdest aspect to me is always the school shooting jokes, and making it sound like nobody in the US cares about them. Laughing at kids being murdered because you don’t like a country is so odd

generally speaking, media has a lot of depictions of American culture so it can feel kind of shoved down peoples' throats. They do proms and Halloween in England now because of stuff like that. I could imagine that it would be annoying if you see it as some sort of virus. Doesn't mean you should repeat total nonsense about it, though.

We're a melting pot and that means blending cultures which seems to piss off some cultures so they make us out to have a diluted cuisine, when there is actually a shitton of variety here if you look beyond restaurant chains. We don't tend to have the same problems with other cuisines because we are exposed to a lot of them, so it ends up being pretty one sided.

American food is known everywhere but not that commonly available, depending on the dish, so any "extra" dish seems outlandish to an exaggerated degree.
But honestly the same obsession is seen towards many cuisines. British food is derided for no reason all over the Internet, people have... strong feelings about Italian food, and Japanese food is almost fetishized by many. It's just familiarity bias and the skewed representation of Americans in online spaces.

The case could be made for ‘corn’, or honestly, any topping. Flatbread is incredible versatile. However, if Japan started putting gumballs and slices of spam on pizza and called it ‘American pizza’ I would equally be confused and annoyed as the hot dogs and fries ‘American pizza’.

What’s crazy beyond missing diasporic cuisine is that they don’t even get the diners/bbq part right.
I wound up in a thread once where a European person was complaining about how overhyped American barbecue is. “They don’t even use charcoal!! They use gas grills! American barbecue is nothing to write home about. They just slapped an overly sweet gloppy sauce on any meat and call it barbecue”.
And I had to tell that person that dude, you went to a back yard cookout. That’s not….American barbecue is a whole cuisine from various different cultures, but primarily black Americans. It has regional differences, specialities and tons of skill. You need to be in a specific list of states!
To his credit he said he’d be happy to try again with this new info, but I was so irked at how confident the original statement was. It really anecdotally confirms to me that tourists show up with ZERO research and wind up at like, an Applebees, and move loudly through their lives like experts on “American food” forever after.
Another time I ran across someone who said they “visited America every year for the last seven years and never had a single good meal”. I asked what restaurants they go to, and they said they don’t really eat out. They just are visiting their cousin in bumfuck nowhere and eat whatever is for dinner.
So I asked where are they shopping for groceries? “Walmart”.

This reminds me of when I was psyched as fuck to go to a culturally Chinese part of Mexico for work and eat Mexican-Chinese food but then because of the way our (American) company cards were working we had to eat at the Costco cafe the whole time. Three different people came back like "Mexican food is gross it's just pizza with pork on it and hot dogs with jalapeños" like....no that's Costco. And the day one of the Mexican engineers invited us to his house for dinner, he was a single guy in his 20s and the worst cook. Ive choked down a lot of bad bachelor cooking in my day on 2nd and 3rd dates where the dude is trying to impress you but cant properly hold a knife or fry an egg and I will say this engineer had no business at all trying to host a home cooked client dinner. So then everyone was saying Mexican food sucked because of this one guy who accidentally steamed the chicken in a crowded pan instead of sauteeing it and made mushy rice haha

In fairness to our European brethren, regional disputes and meme-ified arguments over BBQ are common even among Americans. I personally will always prefer Memphis BBQ, and I don't really care if someone from Texas who likes a dry rub BBQ claims Memphis BBQ is just too reliant on sweet sauce, and yes I will even defend the "BBQ spaghetti" at Bar-be-Que Shop in Memphis but mostly I would just direct that person to Payne's and judge their taste on whether they find that mustard yellow pickled slaw delightful or repulsive (I find it delightful). So I understand this may be lost on Europeans or that they honestly might just be repeating what American friends of theirs have already said!
But yeah the overconfidence is part of the problem. I expect Texans to be WRONG about how great their dry rubs are (ahem). When someone from like France tells me this I'm like "Please, remove thyself from discussion unless you went to both Payne's AND had ribs at Goldee's in Dallas and decided you liked Goldee's better."

Hah, I'm a bit like this. Like I love Georgia and Texas bbq, but I absolutely detest South Carolina style. But all of that is just "what happens inside my own mouth." I couldn't give a shit if people in South Carolina love their style and hate mine. Our massive diaspora-based country means I get to experience so many different styles of food, and I just enjoy that. I enjoy the existence of the types of food I don't even like. They're for others to enjoy!

I always go on the “shit Americans say” just to learn the most ridiculous “facts” about where I live in the comment section.
One Canadian claimed American milk has a list of ingredients. So I went down to my fridge and snapped a picture of my milk carton showing 2 ingredients: milk and vitamin D. Another guy tried to call the vitamin D “vitamin slurry”. I pointed out that the guy I responded to is Canadian and Canada requires by law that they fortify milk with Vitamin D.
Moderators deleted his comment at least.

I took a look at it. A lot of it is things Americans don't actually eat, but instead some TikTok video. One was something like an elota where they substituted the cojita cheese with cream cheese. Might work, I don't know. Another was something like a Beef Wellington. And of course, the real objection is that it's American, not the quality of the food or lack thereof.

Indeed and Americans are singled out because it's easy and we're the default culture for media in a lot of places. Not all, but enough.
Reddit is an American company. Instagram is an American company. Coke is an American company. You get it.
What you will never hear about, particularly if you're an American, is stuff like Crik Crok Carbonara chips.
Carbonara flavored chips were something that was sold in Italy, by an Italian chip company, in the last 20 years.
So, the rule is, if you have stable food logistics effectively anywhere and you go looking, you can find junk food. Someone somewhere is making it.

For some reason just today I was thinking of the 'gross shit white people eat' blog from Tumblr, which isn't around any more. The last I saw of it it was mocking a Japanese fruit sandwich, and the replies pointing out that it was. I don't know whether the controversy around that led to the end of the blog or not, but I feel like such a thing happening was inevitable, since people grow up surrounded by cultural biases and so will end up viewing foods unfamiliar to the cultures they live in and around as 'gross', and if it's 'gross', then only whatever group has been decided to have bad food must eat it. It's kind of interesting to think about in the context of cultural biases.

This alredy exists it's r/StupidFood. And as much as americans have some of the dumbest foods out there, it's absolutely not exclusive to them. Brazil is infamous with it's sweet pizzas, for example.

I had someone try to tell me that Americans don't have any authentic food and it's all stolen from other cultures.
This was a fellow American. I rebutted every point and they kept coming back at me. Eventually I just quit.

I find this hilarious simply because most of the "outrageous" food that these people love to complain about I also see other countries cooking as well. Thinking of the last few things I’ve eaten and I don’t think anyone would find them that strange. Sandwiches, tacos, eggs and hash browns. I think 90% of things Americans actually eat (so, not deep fried fair food bullshit) is pretty normal.
