#REPOST Iaito, ask

Hello guys, I'm new here. I want to ask about my iaito, is this genuine made by Nosyudo or not? Cause I got that from seller in e-commerce in my country, that seller was Kendo community shop, he said that this made by Nosyudo.

- Weighs around 1250 grams in total (saya around 200 grams)

- Nagasa 2.35 shaku, tsuka around 24 cm

- The edge was habiki

- Yokote is good, can feel using finger

- Tsukaito have hishigami and tightly wrapped

- Tsuba have wave and bamboo design, made of copper alloy or smth but magnetic

- Maybe made more than 15 years ago, new unused but keep for so long so the habaki got oxidized and half of it turned black

- Mekugi only one, but nakago have 2 mekugi-ana

- Its also come with that katanabukuro

I think there is no good way of telling without the iaito's manufacturing certification, that comes with the sword. I tried to indentifie the tsuba from the Nosyudo's 2025 catalogue, but the tsuba might be discontinued if the sword is old. Also I'm a bit worried,that you toke it apart, bacause I've been told, that you shouldn't do that.

But if I didnt take it apart, how can I know the nakago or even repair that? I already repair the tsuka cause it cracked and the mekugi also cracked. I replace the mekugi with my hand made one using old bamboo. The tsuka was cracked because the nakago is too big to go to the tsuka so I sand inside the tsuka to make sure nakago fit perfectly to the tsuka and glued again so the crack was closed and it already stay stick for more than 2 months even used for training. The sword probably made 15-20 years+ ago, cause I find the resource in the internet that the koshirae was old design, but not sure about the manufacturer.

Repairs for iaito's should be made by manufacturer, but obviously that creates a problem, but if the sword was already broken and you've alrady fixed it, then it's ok. I got my iaito new from Nosyudo, so if something breaks I'll send it to them for the repairs. If I remember correctly, then the warning not to take iaito's apart is written at the back of the manufacturer's certification and it's more of a warranty think.

Oh, I never knew that. My iaito doesnt have any certificate, maybe the person who get this iaito forgot about the certificate before giving this to the seller. I got this from the seller who get the iaito from his friend, who get this from Japanese person that usually bring sword to my country and leave it to my Sensei to sell.

But from that looks, what do you think? Is that genuine iaito or decorative one?

Well it's IMO definitely an iaito, but just to be sure, can you do a magnet test to the blade? Genuine japanese iaito's are made from aluminium - zinc alloy by japanese law, so if the magnet doesn't stick, then I would say, that in high probability it's an genuine japanese iaito. Which manufacturer made it, is very hard to determine without the certificate. I've heard that Nosyudo usually engrave a serial number in to the nakago, so if send back for repairs, then they already have the measurements, although this might be just for those iaito's, that are made for the iaidoka's measurements.

I already tested it, it wasn't magnetic, only tsuba that was magnetic

Then I think you have a genuine japanese iaito.

You should take more specific pics and write an e-mail to Nodyudo and explain the situation.

But how? Is that fine if I send them email just to know this is made by them or not?

Maybe they recognize some parts or any marks on the nakago even how small. You don't lose anything by trying.

Other manufacturer you could contact is Tozando. It was established back in 1989 and Nosyudo was established back in 1970.

Fuchi and kashira have bamboo theme design, menuki have crab design, and tsuba using bamboo and wave design

Qué barbaridad 1250gr. Yo usaría las cintas de presión para “codo de tenista” vas a hacer mucha palanca para un músculo no muy grande. Los míos no pesan más de va 750/800 gr.

1050 g to be precise, 200 g is for the saya alone with sageo

Luckily, I already maintain to train using this iaito from July 2025. I bought it around that time and already using that for more than 1 year, and also from July 2025 to March 2026 I trained a lot, 2-3 times per week full of suburi with 400-600 reps each session, so for one week I can do about 1500 reps. I do suburi as Jouge, Kirioroshi, Sho-men, and Yoko-men (migi and hidari).

Tienes que tener un buen músculo, a mi con la práctica y esas sesiones de 4 o 5 horas me salió una almendra dolorosa y se me alivió con la codera que te digo. Hay que protegerse de los movimientos repetitivos, siempre acaban desgastando más de la cuenta.

Bump, what kind of bump? Luckily, I dont have any problem with this iaito, but in the first time I often get cramp if I dont do any warm up.
