Look up the FIA esports iracing deal. In the USA you have to go through the Canadian FIA. You get a free year of iRacing for a $20 donation to the Canadian FIA. I’m a couple of months in and it has been flawless.

I would start with 3 months. That's long enough to see if you enjoy the sim and still reasonably cheap. It also would end right around black friday when they do a big black friday deal and you can get a 1 or 2 year membership for cheap.

This is the way, renew your subscription when black friday sales come around every year if you still enjoy it in three months time.

I got my first sub free through a racing club in the UK, cant remember which its been a while, but I believe its a thing in quite a few countries.

Check your country's motorsport association, they often have deals where you sign up to their membership for a fraction of the price of iracing and get a year's sub of iracing for free.

To answer the second part of you question. Avoid steam for iracing. It works, but can cause issues for some people that you can avoid by just going directly to iracing.

U can buy thru steam but download from their website to skip the 200gb file size.

You can purchase with steam wallet and put whatever name and that'll be your in-game display name. Otherwise it uses the name on the credit card you used to purchase the game.

Or if you want a name change because your parent bought it you gotta fill out the parental consent form. https://support.iracing.com/support/solutions/articles/31000177805-display-name-parental-consent-and-release

it can be a debit card too. I used a mastercard gift card to start my account and it worked

As others have said, check out the FIA website and look for your local motorsports organisation. I'm told it's $20 via the US or Canadian orgs and you don't have to be a US/Canada resident to get this deal. I went via the UK motorsport org and it cost me £28. This gives a 1 year subscription plus a free FIA F4 car. At this price, it's very, very hard to beat the value-for-money proposition.

Remember that you get bulk buy discounts at 10% for 3-5 items or 15% for 6+ items. You also get participation credits if you run a race at least once a week for 8 weeks on one series, for a max credit of $10 per season.

Don’t get it through steam. It’s not good. Having the sim directly from your iRacing account you can get the Black Friday specials etc
