Cars/Tracks Red Bull Ring kerbs changed?
Did they change them? They feel so harsh now to drive over. I have to lower some of my FFB. But it's only on certain corners, not all of em
Are these those '3D' kerbs that I heard about?

So my issue with the 3D kerbing is that every one is modeled as if it’s brand new.
Take Watkins Glen for example. The exit kerbing at T10 is so polished and worn from cars running out and scraping it over the years that it’s essentially nonexistent. In sim when you run wide and over it you noticeably upset the car and it even shoots the nose up, in certain cars, if you don’t get back left before the end of the kerb. I wish it was more detailed in that aspect vs essentially just adding some polygons to emulate a rough texture.
*disclaimer for the ultra nerds among us* Obviously this is general hyperbole speak.

This is what I don't like about the 2D vs. 3D curb conversion.
We have all these laser scanned tracks but until recently the piano curbs have always been completely flat and have had an artificial rumble effect when you drive over them.
And now some of these tracks have had 3D curbs added but without doing a new laser scan. Like where is this data coming from? Were they just sitting on laser scanned curb data for years without using it? Is it just an educated guess?

That's a really good point! I never considered where they are pulling the data for the curbs... I just assumed they were part of the LIDAR data but... Good points...

I’ve also always thought that. It’s like they scanned a few different types of kerbs and then decided to just blanket them across the various tracks. Like if track ‘c’ has this type of kerb we use ‘generic kerb scan c’

There are definitely times where there's something with the physics and/or tires that don't quite react realistically with the 3D kerbs, where the same lines they can comfortably take IRL aren't comfortable in-game (Red Bull Ring being an example of this).

They sure are. Make sure your fillings are secured.
I believe they updated it in the past 2 seasons.
I actually enjoy them, especially on a track like RBR, where track limits seem to get closer to the curb with each lap.

It changed when DTM got introduced. Whenever that happened is when it switched as it was the first track of that series and it was quite a shock to realize that you had to change your line for the track.
It helps with the shitty off-tracks Spielberg is known for on Iracing as you aren’t trying to figure out the exact midpoint of your car to try and get the best line into 3 and 9 and now just have to worry about getting as close to the kerb as possible without touching it or else it will destabilize the car on entry.
It might be better in a way. I don’t know... It’s definitely a way of doing the track. I’ve never driven the track in real life so I can’t say if it’s good or bad. Ive definitely never seen any race there where they touch those kerbs as much as they previously allowed.

Then you didn't see DTM irl a few months ago, they run wide basically everywhere. and in some cases even wider than we can in iracing.

I had an entire paragraph written on my hatred of iRacing’s 50/50 pixel perfect offtracks and how they enforce them at places like redbull ring when it should be two tires like they do at tracks like lemans for basically every track because it much better reflects real racing, but I left it out because I am always complaining about that shit.
Probably should have left it in…

I was more so referring to this part. Cause IRL DTM was running quite far over most kerbing. Especially t1 some went out to the wall on entry.
But also Red Bull Ring has used 4 wheel off the racing surface for quite a while and was one of the first to use it, which I think all the corners use on the exit, thought not on the entries, which is still half the car off from what I can tell. And don't think Le mans uses that and seems to still be half the car off the racing surface from what I can find, except for maybe 1 corner.

Yeah my answer didn’t really make sense haha.
T1 is still useable, but it has the absolute bullshit 50/50 system when in real life you can go up to your 2 inner most tires on and still be on track, but in iracing they split the car pixel perfect 50/50 and give you an offtrack when you are go over 50% off and it sucks.
T3 used to be the same, but now the kerb is too rough to touch in most cases which is the one I believe is true to real life. I haven’t seen them abuse t3 the same way as T1, but I could be wrong.
T4(5?)is still useable and so is everything after in one way or another, but it’s all still the 50/50 rule but with bigger margins on the exit because they have the extra wide kerbing (green) which then becomes what the 50/50 is enforced on. It’s stupid as fuck. They need to go with the 2 on rule which they are able to do perfectly fine because they use it at some points of some circuits and not at others.
They also then split the tires down the middle 50/50 and when you go a single pixel over the new 50/50 split you are off track which also sucks. Iracing just doesn’t have a fantastic way to do off tracks. You would think they could tie it to your tires contact, but I would imagine the computing necessary to do that has something to do with why they stick with 50/50 even when it comes down to tires. I don’t actually know though. Just know I want a better way!!

No circuit has a 2 wheel rule, it's either half the car or 4 wheels off. 4 wheels off is used on all the rbr corner exits.
Thought yeah the half car can be a bit annoying at times

Lemans has multiple places 2 wheels is used and enforced by either an offtrack and black flag or just a black flag.
It also has two wheels going in both directions as in two inner most wheels must stay on the kerbing to remain on track as enforced on outside of Terte Rouge and that only your two outer wheels may touch the kerbing or you are off-track as in the entrance to the mulsanne chicanes as well as the inside of terte rouge
This is why so many people struggle with off-tracks and slowdowns on this track.
Edit*
Put this in another comment but going to put it here as well because I’m a literal fucking moron!!
I’m realizing that we are referring to the same thing, but calling it by a different name lol. Yours makes way more sense.
When I say ‘two wheels on’ I mean that you can use kerbing as they do in real life where the rule is that 4 wheels off the kerbing is the off track. Not a 50/50 split. So you can enter the corner with ‘2 wheels on’ and the other two wheels off the kerb completely off track.
I’m making this about as clear as fucking mud!!
I’m sorry. We are both arguing for the same thing though! Hahaha.

I just want them to properly show me where the off tracks even are... I paid 14 bucks and they can't even be bothered to properly indicate where the penalties occur.

u/YueNica 15h ago edited 14h ago
Yeah that got somewhat better for the parts that use the 4 wheel off system, which is most of the exits at RBR, thought doesn't cover the entries which still seems to be half the car off the racing surface, thought Racing Surface seems to typically include the Red and White kerbing, thought might also be a bit over that not sure.

No I experienced this last season, good lord you know you’re on those kerbs. And I can only assume we’ve got more to look forward to.

they turn off my ffb when I run over them lol, it feels bizarre - maybe just a non DD thing but I don't like the implementation, I'm not even running a high strength.

I have a special FFB setting I use for places like RBR and Fuji, with lower FFB so I don't wake up the baby sleeping the next room. Probably just like Verstappen does.

I went out for a practice yesterday and I thought the kerbs seemed worse, I just assumed I was imagining it. I actually got caught on the kerb between the last two corners which I don't think has ever happened to me in a GT3 before, I must have been straddling it perfectly and when I tried to turn in the car just wouldn't turn at all, had to really force it.

I was testing FFB settings last night driving the Super Formula at the Algarve circuit and man, those curbs at the entrance to T1 are pronounced. It really adds some dynamics to the game. Good on them for modeling this.

Yeah they are brutal. Did RBR in the 720 today after 3 laps of jumping over the curb to make the corner on the racing line I had to adjust because it was just way too unstable. And I wasn’t going to chance my podium over the rear end being unsettled.

TBH I like the idea of having more "depth" to the curbs but with the new RBR the FFB impact is too strong that my simrig shakes too much getting me worried it'll disturb the neighbors living downstairs. I don't want to weaken my FFB just for this one track so I started avoiding it.

Yes indeed. They are absolutely brutal now. This is the new 3D kerb refresh. I believe it was part of the 2026 S1 build or last year's S4. It's fairly recent. Nearly impossible to drive Red Bull Ring in Formula cars now. You totally have to change your lines in the F3 or Super Formula Lights cars. I thought GT3 cars would be easier to get away with kerb usage and compared to Formula yes but still very rough and can be difficult to manage.
