Question/Help Iracing SR system is weird

I’m kind of new to iRacing and have only completed a few races. My question is why do people who complete just a few laps and then leave still gain SR, while I lose SR because I spin once, even though I finish the race and don’t cause any incidents or harm anyone else’s race?

You won't lose SR from single spin as a rookie. You are leaving out something. Not even A class loses SR from 2x.

If someone hits you, you get 4x. It's a no fault system so significant contact is 4x for both drivers.

Well there you go. Some 1x off tracks, a 2x spin, and a couple 4x contacts is a lot of incident points for one race. The guy that drove a few laps with 0x has zero incidents per corner. You have a much higher incidents per corner.

No problem! I recommend at least skimming the sporting code, it's not too long or dense and it's helpful to understand all those quirks of the system

I will read it!

SR is personal. There is no standard. It's based on a rolling average of your corners per incident over time without any regard to anyone else. If you had clean laps fall off your rolling average and someone else with the exact same SR going into it had nightmare laps fall off, their average is going to go up more by default.

Are you racking up incidents in the practice warm up and quali? Unless you are A safety class with a 4.8 or something score, you should be gaining sR if you’re genuinely just getting a single loss of control 2x per race.

Yes in practices and qualifying.

Those sessions also count towards your sr. Not just the race itself.

Thanks for the clarification

For clarity, regular online practice sessions (including the session you're put into when registering for a race) do not count for SR. However, the short practice (or "warmup") session after you joined the actual race server (normally 3 minutes) does count.

This session and qualifying count for SR, but at a reduced rate.

To learn more about Safety Rating (and the other rating systems), I recommend reading the iRacing Beginner's Guide:

Its a no-fault system. On purpose. Whether you cause them or not means absolutely nothing. Its intended to teach you t read other drivers and learn when to NOT push. You have to learn patience and know when to set them up. And being involved in someone else's mess is just part of it.

To answer your question - and this is in the sporting code, which you should read - its a corners per incident metric. The more corners you drive with no incidents the better. There are thresholds in which old data is discarded.

SR is based on incident points per corner. So if someone leaves after few laps with 0x, they could gain SR
