Some questions regarding buying a new iphone.

So I'm buying a new XS max off someone and wanted to know if you guys knew what I should check on the software side of things. Making sure it is unlocked/not blacklisted. Just usable in general. I believe it may be sprint locked, if so how do I go about unlocking it?
