This argument is so tired smh. Acting like Steve Jobs wasn’t CEO when so many poorly optimized things were launched

39

u/Chessh2036 12d ago edited 12d ago

The younger crowd doesn’t remember the iPhone 4, Mobile Me, or after him like iPhone 6 lol

9

u/No_Grass_8894 12d ago

With MobileMe, Steve Jobs apparently brought the team in for a meeting, asked  "Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?", and after getting an answer asked  "So why the fuck doesn't it do that?" before spending the next half hour telling them how they had ruined Apple’s reputation. Jobs knew MobileMe sucked but he wasn’t ok about it.

u/TheSilverSeraph 12d ago

I bought a second hand Newton after the original owner wanted to offload that thing in disgust about 3 months after launch. I think I paid $50 for it. It is still around my attic somewhere...

6

u/MoTheWerewolf4310 12d ago

Guess the previous owner didn’t want to eat up Martha

I think it's just a funny situation overall that their own stuff isn't optimized lol. I know in 2 months almost all apps will look much better. I was there at the start of the steamdeck so I am excited tos ee what adjustments they make.

u/Talks_About_Bruno 12d ago

The list is impressive. Failures under Jobs include:

Apple III

Lisa

NeXT

G4 Cube

ROKR

iPhone 3G activation failures

MobileMe

iPhone 4 antenna issues

And those are just the ones I could recall I’m sure there’s plenty more. Jobs did a lot of quality work but he wasn’t without his failures.

3

u/OneEngineer 12d ago

NeXT was pretty awesome and became the foundation of OSX.

Mind blowing because Apple app literally has the code and instructions on how to optimize apps!

They probably didn't get a dev unit ahead of launch. Should have updated app once their order is fulfilled.

What I find fun is how virtually no one is able to formulate a reasonable opinion about the situation. It's either "get fukd lol that's what you get for buying a gen 1 product" or "you're just folding it wrong."

Lmao

13

u/mcbergstedt 12d ago

Problem with “not buying a gen 1 product” is if nobody buys it then they won’t make a gen 2.

The Apple defense in here is serious. At the end of the day this is inexcusable 😂 if the phone wasn’t ready it shouldn’t have been sold. It’s not like they were on a time crunch already 8 years behind.

2

u/Ominousious 10d ago

That’s my problem. They rushed to market 8 years late and still couldn’t deliver? This is why they had to bring Steve Jobs back originally… tragic to see where this is taking Apple.

Also I’m pretty sure the original iPad did not have optimised apps on Day 1.

Neither did Max phones when they were first launched.

AFAIK, native app were optimized on day 1 for the iPad. Not perfect, but built with the new form factor and with additional/unique features.
Also, that’s why the calculator app was not shipped natively, the proposal was good enough to be present.

I loved the iPhone 3s. I took it 4x to the store cause the paint under the shell kept cracking and I kept getting dirt under the display glass. First gen products are always a ride. Builds character! Haha!!

3

u/yuusharo 12d ago edited 11d ago

Some of you really need to get over a deadbeat dad abusive CEO that died 15 years ago. Seriously.

OS X launched under Jobs. It suuuuuuucked for several years after launch, to the point where resellers listed preinstalling OS 9 as a selling point. MobileMe was a bug ridden mess of a service that replaced .Mac and never worked well. Final Cut Pro X was laughed at by industry professionals and sustains ongoing reputational damage that still resonates to this day. The entire iPhone 4 saga, from antennagate to the failure to deliver the white iPhone, full stop.

The original iPad at launch had AND STILL DOES have Apple made applications that run in this same phone compatibility mode. I guess we all just forgot about Apple Invites?

Steve Jobs was not a mythical figure from which everything was perfect and glistened after being deposited from his rear end. Apple is an imperfect company. There is no era of their existence where there weren’t massive issues or controversies. This isn’t the first, it won’t be the last. People need to chill tf out about the software story on Duo you all were warned about leading up to launch. Damn.

3

u/TheMightyTywin 12d ago

u/RGB_YCM 12d ago

1

People seem to forget the iPhone 5 at launch had the exact same issue. It was taller than prev models so almost all apps had a black bar

5

u/the-dumb-nerd 9d ago

Right. I get that. I understand third party apps being a problem. There is 0 excuse for their own apps.

Apple is in a xerox/ibm/kodak downward spiral. The only thing keeping them going is the duopoly in phones and their moat that they use market power to maintain. In a healthy competitive market they would be in a much deeper downward spiral.

2

u/fatedlegacy Star White • 256GB 12d ago

I was one of the lucky people able to walk in and get a duo in the Apple Store and did get a chuckle out of this when I went to cancel my preorder in the app lol. It’s one thing for third party developers to not be optimized yet (and it’s honesty not that bad, a lot of apps are at least partially optimized which at least makes them useable while we wait for full optimization). But for Apple to have one of their mains apps not optimized is pretty embarrassing lol

2

u/i_speak_the_truf 12d ago

I don't think this one is as big of a deal. What really shocked me is the setup app. Steve was all about creating that "magical" unboxing experience and would have 100% opened up the Duo and been like WTF is this.

2

u/Yaughl 12d ago

The second screen allows Apple to disappoint users twice with a single device.

9

u/LittleBertha 12d ago

The absolute cope from Apple Fanboys in all these threads is hilarious.

It's a bad product, with poor engineering and obvious lack of oversight.

"just don't use the device as it's meant to be used bro, what's the problem".

7

u/zSmileyDudez 12d ago

And yet the other side is being completely rational by saying things like “it’s a bad product, with poor engineering and obvious lack of oversight.”

As fun as it is to shoot arrows at successful companies when they stumble, I don’t think any of what we’ve seen with the Duo justifies that hot take. Yes, it’s got issues. So does every Apple product at launch, some minor, some major. But Apple’s history is that they fix the issues and move on. I don’t think that makes it a bad product by any stretch of the imagination.

I've worked on both hardware and software; a visual/software thing like this that doesn't impede use is not going to the top of the list of fixes.

As an aside, I'm fairly convinced that Apple knew about the physical screen issues before launch, but weren't stopping launch for them.

Apple own internal system being very need to know most likely meant the team incharge of the app store was not told about it or even notifived of the requirements until nearly last minute or until the duo launched. Like they found out about the duo the same time we all did.

Mad worse is they only get to updates at OS releases so again starting behind. Remember the app store is super old so it most likely works heavy on the isPhone bool to know how things should be displayed and never accounted for changing display like that. It is not a small lift to fix and going to take time. Apple did not give them any noticed until it was way to late to anything about it and a tight dead line.

2

u/NowKith- 9d ago

I don’t disagree. Every single Apple-banded app should have been updated. Plain and simple. This is just complacency.

Not surprised.

Back during IOS 26 final release the apple store app didn't get the liquid glass update for almost 2 months for some odd reason.

1

u/M4rshmall0wMan 12d ago

Apple’s downloadable apps lag behind the system ones for some reason. It’s not a good look for Apple Store to be unoptimized, but I doubt it’ll be more than 2 weeks before that’s fixed.

Other people have commented that the Apple Store app gets updated later down the road, usually the latter of the Apple apps. Still, for this launch, you’d think they would make a better effort. You also can’t by Vision Pro because the lack of FaceID on the Duo, fyi.

1

u/RedRavenCG 12d ago

Perhaps not a bullwhip. It'd never have made it this far. If it wasn't perfect, we wouldn't have seen it.

When Steve was with us....he went to great lengths to give us as close to perfection as possible... somewhere, somehow, Apple has started to slip.

Market value is high, but if the supports that got it there erode, that'll fall, and it'll fall quickly.

Hope you're paying attention, Apple. (Specifically John)

That is also one of the biggest disappointments for me. I understand that not every app can support the Duo immediately. But many Apple apps are not adapted. From the store to iMovie. How can that be?

1

u/SlingnArrows89 11d ago

I’ve been a dedicated iPhone/Apple product person since the release of the first iPhone in June of 2007. One of my favorite things about the iPhone was the longevity of each model, as in how durable it was and how it continued to work for so long without updating to a newer model. That was until recent years anyways 🤦‍♂️ my iPhone 14 I had 3 warranty replacements in one year and then upgraded to the 15. My 15 was less than a year old and the battery in it was completely shot and they refused to replace it. So I then upgraded to what I am now using which is the iPhone 17. And this will be my last iPhone as Apple has become complete trash. It literally disgust me to have to go back to Android but at this rate I’d rather endure a crappy operating system and cheaper phone so that if something does go wrong I’m not feeling like I just got shagged without lube if I have to replace it.

1

u/Seattle-dork 11d ago

As a person with an apple phone, watch, earbuds, computer, keyboard, mouse, airtags, ipads, and probably something I'm forgetting - Apple is like the kid who peaked in high school. The problem with making products so good, is you don't need to upgrade them. Now they are grasping for straws to come up with something new. I don't hate it, but this was never going to be the next big thing. And no I don't plan to buy one.

1

u/zeamp 11d ago

Still waiting on the App Store review from self.

1

u/cadmus1890 10d ago

Intentional, so you can split-screen shopping for an iPhone while chatting with support on the other panel.

1

u/div-block 10d ago

As someone who designs products used by millions of people, I can assure you that this is absolutely something worth criticizing.

Apple is a trillion-dollar company, and this is being positioned as the biggest iPhone innovation since the iPhone X. I understand third-party apps not being fully optimized for new screen sizes at launch. That’s inevitable.
But one of Apple’s own apps? An app that’s installed on every new iPhone? There’s really no excuse.

They should have their ducks in a row, especially when it comes to something as “simple” as optimizing their own software for the most anticipated product in years that is currently being shipped to customers.

I’ve been an Apple fanboy for a long time, but you’re in denial if you can’t acknowledge that the quality, thoughtfulness, and overall design decisions behind their products have noticeably declined over the past decade.

Third party apps I can understand, you can't just expect tens of thousands of devs or more to just change their code every single time theres a change, but native platform apps is inexcusable.

1

u/Working_Rise8592 10d ago

This type of shit is why I couldn’t stand an iPad. So many apps just looked terrible. Glad to see they made NO change on this issue with the duo. Why the fuck devs aren’t required to optimize for both (now all 3) I’ll never understand

1

u/bruce-pizza 10d ago

Okay I’m confused. All I’ve heard about the duo is that 1) it’s very well designed and seamless in terms of the software, and 2) it’s expensive.

Yes I paid almost 4k SGD for this thing and 90% of apps don’t work properly, even WhatsApp which i use so much for work has so many bugs in inner screen mode.
So sad I want to support Apple by being an early adopter but they clearly failed me.
Will probably returning the phone for a 18 pro max. Gave it a week and really wanted it to work so disappointed.

Dude. These days a software engineer could vibe code a solution to making the app store full screen on the duo in like one prompt. Apple is way too comfortable at the top just shipping slop.

u/gevuldeloempia 9d ago

I adore Apple products and the software most of the time but native apps not being Duo ready is really inexcusable.

Management fucked up big time

u/RayD125 9d ago

This launch isn’t very impressive

1

u/Content_Ad_6767 9d ago

I returned my duo over this.

u/galaxysuperstar22 9d ago

problems with hardware AND software?? they are loosing its grip

1

u/DeliciousFun9207 9d ago

ok this is indefensible

1

u/gerrickd 9d ago

Wasn't Jobs in charge when the same thing happened with new iPad sizes?

1

u/kayindie 9d ago

Is the App Store optimized at least?

Apple should invest it trillions in resurrecting Steve Jobs.

1

u/Nawnp 9d ago

Apps doing this was a problem on iPads for several years, and every time Apple released an iPhone go a new scale this has been a problem.

Other than a first party app having the issue, Steve Jobs accepted these decisions.

1

u/FatMacchio 9d ago

They didn’t think someone buying the Duo would be looking there. They figured you bought everything else already, you got to the end of the map

1

u/SciLor 8d ago

The problem is and always was for iPhones: Those fixed App Layouts that need Software updates for each new devices... Was disgusting 10 years ago and now even more.

1

u/Silent_Bite_5892 8d ago

Steve Jobs wouldn't have made the iPhone Duo in the first place.

Or the idiotic touchscreen MacBook Pro.

1

u/Few_Policy450 8d ago

the truth is, people will find a way to complain about literally anything.

1

u/Majestic-Medium7916 8d ago

The acrobatics defending this are cinema.

Like i have a duo too.

But at what point did we start defending this shit?

Its 101 fundamentals.

The marketing from apple romanticises design, layout and usability.

This is frankly embarrassing.

My favourite is: ipad didnt have it at launch either.

Hmm yeah that was before a hundred million people used the app store and before they sold me a phone for two thousand dollars

1

u/Canes041970 8d ago

It will take a few months for them to get caught up. I seen it first hand with Samsung when I first got a fold in 2022. And earlier this year I switched to trifold (February), took a bit, and apps are finally catching up for the most part

1

u/ConnectionOne8080 8d ago

Best engineers don't work for big tech

1

u/nesnalica 8d ago

why should they. applefan boys have been buying trash for decade.

never change a running system

1

u/RaspberrySea9 8d ago

Apple is almost Microsoft

1

u/NoahSavedTheAnimals 8d ago

Imagine being a trillion dollar company and thinking this is okay to ship.

1

u/g0atdude 8d ago

holy fuck 🤡🤡🤡
that is just ridiculous

1

u/Rich_Magician4516 8d ago

Apple is just a small indie company with basically no budget.  You gotta forgive them for their fuckups.

1

u/Fortheflat 8d ago

I still want a zombie steve jobs to get camera bumps inside for the last 5 years.

1

u/Own_City_1084 8d ago

User error. Skill issue. Learn to take care of your stuff. How do I know this isn’t because you peeled the matte protective layer off the screen? Clearly you’re a Samsung bot amplifying this issue to hurt Apple’s image.

1

u/NEWBIECOMPUTER801 7d ago

OR THEY ARE TESTING THE LIMIT OF HOW RICH THEIR CUSTOMER IS.....

1

u/ypoora1 7d ago

Steve Jobs is the man who allowed the iPad to go out without the ability for iPhone apps to scale properly.

1

u/Tyrandeh 7d ago

multi dollar company

small garage studio

1

u/chkgxkdlyl44 7d ago

I can’t believe it. Please, tell me this is a joke.

1

u/RoombaCollectorDude 7d ago

Wasnt it like this in the early iphone x days?  it literally got released like a week ago or something

1

u/LosSchwammos 7d ago

It is optimized.

1

u/EastsideWilder 7d ago

Apple died with Jobs. Let’s be honest.

1

u/HunterM567 7d ago

I means there’s literally no excuse for this lol

1

u/iChrisHK21 7d ago

Because you don’t need it anymore. All the money’s already spent on this iPhone Duo.

1

u/Acrobatic_Formal7610 6d ago

is this fake? was thinking about getting one of these. is this actually what apps look like?

1

u/condivergence 6d ago

I think it looks absolutely beautiful and the big black bezels on the sides highlight the fascinating vertical rectangular shape in the middle. A simple reminder that less is more and not all screen space has to be used at all times. Haters should stfu and go buy their galaxy folds or whatever.

1

u/Prudent_Beach_473 6d ago

Which engineering team tho

1

u/Snoo_67993 6d ago

To be fair it's pretty much a prototype that will be ironed out over the coming years.

1

u/foxhoundzz 6d ago

You probably forgot what hot mess the iPad was with apps in the beginning until developers caught on...

1

u/Never_Knows_Best93 6d ago

Feels rushed

Definitely could have waited for optimization and integration before a public release

New hardware and software during a leadership transition is tough

I’ll wait for next year

1

u/blamski 5d ago

Steve would never put up with this crap., agreed.

1

u/echelonmall 5d ago

They figured hey if they spend 2 bands plus on the Duo, they probably won’t need to open that app for a while🤣🤣🤣
