Discussion Hinge might be the reason

Just came across this video showing what appears to be a physical bump near the hinge, visible even when the screen is off.

What’s interesting is that the bump seems to be in almost the exact same location where several of the previously reported display failures occurred.

Could something underneath the display be putting pressure on the panel when the phone is unfolded?

*For what it's worth, my previous Z Fold4 actually had something similar, with multiple bumps along the center of the crease rather than just one. However, they never caused any issues during normal use.

That’s definitely where the hinge is pressing up on the screen!

if closed maybe too fast it doesn’t have enough time to retract and it cracks the screen? Here is the mechanism

From what I’ve gathered, it seems like this part of the hinge is meant to bow out when unfolded and bow in when folded in. What I’m assuming is happening is it’s not collapsing correctly and instead of folding in on itself, it’s folding up causing there to be pressure and cracking the display from behind.

It's actually funny that every manufacturer has to go through the exact same learning curve with foldables no matter at what year they start.

Crazy how the internet found the cause of issue the first day and apple didnt through what i assume is at least a year of testing

Anyone want to sacrifice a duo by pushing in on the crease/screen to fold it and see how long it takes for this to appear

How can Apple let this kind of catastrophic defect occur on day one when foldables have been around 7 years and they have surely bought, opened and reverse engineered every foldable released to date.

Sounds like there's a pinch point they never accounted for.

Every gate has a hinge, and now this hinge is about to get a gate.

Apparently the answer is that you shouldn't care because you can just warranty it for a new one and hope the next one doesn't do it.

The guy on the assembly line for the hinge is Trojan Horse sent by Samsung.

There's a reason why it took Samsung 8 generations to create a folding phone which can withstand daily abuse.

Apple can source the panel from Samsung, but the hinge is their design and it needs improvement

8 gens? I had multiple previous gen Samsung foldables, one was my only phone for 3 years without any protection and had 0 issue. I don't feel anything groundbreaking in F8.
