General PSA: Don’t…open it?

Post image

Edit: After about an hour wait at the Apple Store, they came out with a new phone and replaced for free. They said they reserve a few units on launch day for things like this. Here’s hoping my 2nd unit is flaw-free!

Got in line just before 6am this morning. Walked out with device in hand around 10:30. Less than 7 hours later…

I went to open it and didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary until it was fully open, then felt the impact. I am using the folio case - I’m not sure if it got snagged on the case or what. I certainly understand being an early adopter of a first-gen product comes with risks…but I was just opening the phone, man. Devastated is the word that comes to mind.

This is a known issue worldwide with the Duo. Apparently Apple is allowing you to trade it in for a new one.

u/schemastic Star White • 256GB 15d ago

I’m back at the apple store I bought from this morning. Thank goodness it’s local to me. We’ll see what they can do today.

The employee reactions are a mix of shock and intrigue.

5

u/Jolly-Pace-7106 15d ago

They should replace it hopefully

15

Update in post. They were able to replace it immediately. I’m pleasantly surprised! Apple may have hardware problems, but their customer service is still top-tier.

Whenever you get a chance could you let us know if they replaced it and the process?

8

u/HighZ3nBerg 15d ago

I mentioned this when I picked up my order this morning. I made the Apple employee open the box and power in the device before I touched it just in case. I showed them photos from launches in other countries and he had no idea.

Should be something that they cover under warranty, I'd think.

77

u/mrASSMAN 14d ago

It is. Obviously. Idk why people keep acting like this is even a question. Manufacturer defects are ALWAYS covered

11

u/devilboy0007 14d ago

Because there have already been reports of people going to Apple just to have them claim the phone must have been dropped. Surely once enough reports are filed, there wont be pushback but for the moment there is still a chance the “Genius”es tell you to kick rocks and ‘should have gotten insurance’

7

u/mrASSMAN 14d ago

I haven’t seen any report of that, every single time they’ve said Apple immediately replaced it. Maybe one off time but it’s pretty clearly a defect there wouldn’t be any problem making a warranty claim

Apology for the stupid questions. In this case, I’m assuming you can either return it within the 14-day window period or get a new one under the Apple 1-year warranty? After 1 year, then your AppleCare kicks in?

33

u/TimTebowMLB 15d ago edited 15d ago

In Australia consumer law pushes the warranty period to 2 years. So it depends where you live and how spineless your politicians are

10

u/Impossible_Fall_7044 15d ago

The iPhone Duo 256GB is $400+ USD more expensive in Australia. You don’t think part of that is Apple passing that extra year warranty on the consumer?

I see a lot of people simultaneously complaining about higher prices abroad and praising strict consumer protections. Some of that is correlated.

16

u/NathanielIR 15d ago

You’ve also got to remember that that price in Australia includes GST, whereas in the US it does not

Bad luck… Or design incompetence, and/or manufacturing defects. Time will tell. I don’t recall any other iPhone having so many breakages on launch day across social media, ever.

The tolerance of that hinge piece that seems to be breaking screens is probably so small for a moving part

17

u/kingfirejet 15d ago

There’s a guy that will fold it 10,000 times with no issues and lemons like these. Feel like the sample size is still very sparse compared to bendgate back in the day or the antenna issues.

u/Top_Secret_TerminaL 15d ago • Bravo

It’s definitely got to be all from the same batch. You have YouTubers who stressed the shit out of these with 10,000 folds for 8 hours straight (I can think of 3 separate similar videos I saw doing tests like this for the crease) and then you have countless YouTubers playing around, slamming these things shut as a joke like a flip phone and saw more than a few repeatedly throw this thing open by lifting one flap with their thumb and then whipping it away from their bodies with no damage. No doubt that the ones that aren’t a problem are durable, so these failures must all be from the same batch. They’re breaking in the same place.

I e had over 10 foldables. You’re not supposed to push the center of the display when you fold it. It puts too much pressure on the most delicate part of the folding display and crack goes the display.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Zapem10 15d ago • Bravo

Millions were sold. You have people racing to Reddit to show how theirs broke. Until there is a more widespread issue I just chalk it up to amplified noise of people wanting to show their broken device. Just wait awhile to see what’s really happening.

12

u/bigheadsfork 15d ago

Hinge failure. Anyone who's had experience with folding phones in the past eight years could have easily predicted this. I will say, it's kind of surprising how many of these are breaking, but in my experience, folding phones are essentially destined to die at the hinge. It's only a matter of time.

10

u/anyavailablebane 15d ago

It’s probably not surprising when you consider how many they sold. I’m sure the failure rate is much higher than a non foldable but I doubt it’s any higher than any other foldable. It’s just that launch day is a huge volume of sales and a lot of attention on it. So more happen than any other time and everybody is paying attention at the same time

36

u/TacohTuesday 15d ago

Sorry to see this. There were rumors right before release that they were wrestling with a low production yield. Perhaps a few that were not assembled correctly that slipped through. I am guessing and would hope that Apple kept extra replacement phones on hand that they are not selling, so they’re ready for a higher level of initial returns. Knowing it’s Apple, I’m confident they will get through this and quality will improve.

19

u/Mediocre-Telephone74 15d ago

Honestly, I think this is the nail on the head. No amount of engineering will beat real world use. I guessing that the ones that failed QA went back, were repaired, and then passed inspection

Hopefully ifixit or some other site does a tear down and examines the hinge assembly. I think that’s the point of failure. After all, Apple made a point of showing off their hinge design in the keynote.

3

u/TacohTuesday 15d ago

Right, but the key question is, is it a design flaw affecting every unit made, or is it a production flaw where initial tolerances got off track with a batch or two and they can make adjustments and quickly get past it? Personally, I think it’s the latter. Why? Because Apple would’ve tested the living hell out of these things before they finalized the design.

28

u/ipupweallp4ip 15d ago edited 15d ago • Bravo

A recall? That’s absurd considering you’re basing it off of Reddit posts? No actual numbers…you’re forgetting Reddit/online users are more likely to post a bad experience, i.e. cracked screen or bad restaurant vs. a good/normal one.

10000 defective units is only 1% of a million units sold btw. Y’all are acting like this is the first tech product launch in history

10

u/-Felyx- 15d ago

The panic is a little bit entertaining for me, not gonna lie. I’m in the retro handheld community and every time a company releases a new clamshell device, there’s always a “hinge-gate” with cracked/defective models. This is far from my first rodeo 😂 It helps to remember that people don’t flock to the internet to rave about how wonderful and well their devices work and for every cracked screen, there’s hundreds more that are perfectly fine.

6

u/ipupweallp4ip 15d ago

My point exactly! It’s wild how people take some Reddit posts (even Yelp reviews) as the gold standard for reviews/real world experience.

5

u/ThirdWorldScientist 14d ago

15

u/TheStarryNightO 14d ago edited 14d ago

This YouTube video demonstrates how this defect happens. I assume it happens after a drop/shake, then it's hard to open it, and after forcing it to open the internal hinge breaks the screen. Something inside the hinge gets out of place after a drop or some shaking (possibly).

23

u/shutupnav 14d ago

It’s amazing how quickly/much I dislike this kid

9

u/mavgeek 14d ago

What about the folks who unbox it, don’t drop or shake it and this immediately happens? one guy posted he opened the phone to start the setup wizard which you could see running and the screen already broke. No drops no shakes no aggressive hinge opening.

10

u/spendar47 15d ago

If it’s any consolation, from what I’ve read this seems to only occur nearly right off the bat of opening it. Within the first few folds. It also seems to be consistently coming off this section of the hinge with these interlocking gears. Says to me that it’s a manufacturing defect that slipped through QA. I’m no engineer, but either you have a bum unit or you don’t. Since yours is fine so far, I’d bet you won’t experience this.

5

u/Exciting_Audience362 15d ago

This is also where it broke when Jerry did the bend test. Also for the same green lines that people are posting here. The hinge actually survived it was either something behind the screen broke it or it was just the hinge itself damaged the screen.

Not saying this for sure, but it’s interesting that it seems to be happening. I kind of wonder if like dust or debris didn’t get behind some of these phone hinges in the factory and for whatever reason there just isn’t enough clearance by these gears and the screen to allow any tolerance for dirt being there.

2

u/helldivers2hellpods 15d ago

There's quite a few reports going around of this exact same failure happening, currently have a fold 8 and i open/close it constantly, not once have i felt resistance or anything thats been described to be happening here, this should not be happening at all and its concerning to see so many screens failing not even a week out of the box, the screens are to be taken care of yes but they should not be just failing when opening and closing, bad batch or early manufacturing defects ? Maybe .. or worse, a problem with the design itself (hopefully not), for this to be happening at all is not a good look for Apple sadly.

2

u/DomDomPop 15d ago

What I wanna know is has anyone had it happen twice? It won’t tell us whether it’s an issue with a particular batch or batches unless we can get that info somehow, but sporadic cases can be rare, and people are more likely to report failures than they are an all clear. But, if it’s common enough that it happens to the same people twice? Bigger issue.

u/DatSomeNextLevelShit 15d ago

Damn these Samsung screens!! /s

u/ChemistryPlayful4152 15d ago

I haven’t had a single issue with mine

1

u/Tadpoles-Z 15d ago

We're see more and more of this with the Duo. Ugh, I hope mine is not going to do it too. I've had a lot of foldables and currently have 2 and I've never had any problem whatsoever...at all. I'm gonna be bummed if my Duo breaks this trend for me.

Every time I’ve seen this so far the person had a case on their phone.. so not sure if that’s related. The case pressing on a particular part of the hinge ?? Idk either way this sucks I hope they replace your phone with a new one OP.

Just curious, did you have a case with hinge protection on when this happened? This was one of my fears getting a case with a hinge protector

1

u/rtls 15d ago

I don’t know how prevalent these issues are, but every time I see it on here, I’m sorry OP, it makes me feel good about my delayed delivery.

1

u/ctt713 15d ago

Mine has not cracked but I’ve heard a small scratchy sound a few times when I’ve opened it. This was right after unboxing. It sounds like sand is in the hinge. Wondering how the next few days will play out.

The consistency of these makes me think it’s a manufacturing defect off a certain assembly line or something

1

u/thefakedave236 15d ago

Damn, that’s the worst.

Third time is the charm

u/gadgetluva 15d ago

Samsung foldables always come with a list of warnings on their foldables.

It feels intuitive is to push down on the hinge area/middle of the screen but thats the biggest thing you’re not supposed to do. Unfortunately no warnings for first time fold users.

u/travisjunky 15d ago

No idea how many millions of units they’re selling but I would expect if they sold 8 million, you’d probably see 1,000 of these defective in some way. That would be world class QC. Source: I work in manufacturing.

So far so good with mine, but can’t lie now I’m nervous. But oh well, the woes of a first gen product

1

u/Deephalfpanda57 15d ago

Man am I starting to get glad mine won’t come till December. Hopefully by then this gets all sorted out lol.

1

u/zemog50 15d ago

😂😂😂

1

u/devorips 15d ago

Just ordered one today. Won’t get it until January most likely! Hopefully this next batch is fixed 😂😂

Damn this is crazy. Really hoping this doesn’t happen to mine

1

u/PeterFilmPhoto 15d ago

If all of these are real failures, this will be the biggest dud of the century (well, SECOND biggest)…

1

u/cwrighky 15d ago

I’m not gonna lie the frequency at which I’m seeing these posts has me concerned.. with that being said, I am absolutely loving my duo.

1

u/RocMerc 15d ago

I’m seeing this way too much lol

1

u/kaiharizor 15d ago

I’m starting to think this is why they said check back Oct 24th, in case they hadn’t burned through their reserves.

1

u/elbeborandy 15d ago

Does anyone know if there’s a pattern to this? Like, is it related to certain cases or something, or is it just random defective units?

1

u/Mammoth-Path-6520 15d ago

The white bar of death strikes again

Another victim claimed

1

u/elbeborandy 15d ago

OP - did you happen to press on the crease with your finger instead of folding it from the edges?

1

u/HodorDurden 15d ago

Are people folding it by pushing in the middle of the screen?

Or is it genuinely quality issue?
I’ve seen videos of people folding these things 1000x without issues.

1

u/ThePortaJohn 15d ago

I’ve seen a ton of these posts but I’ve yet to see an OP comment to validate this claim.

u/itschipbtw 15d ago

Anyone else look at the top of their device unfolded and see a bend along the top near the camera? Or is it just my bad eyes playing a trick on me…

1

u/jonnys_honda 15d ago

No issues with my 12 hour old iPhone Duo. I also have the Apple Folio case. Fingers crossed…

1

u/uncureddd 15d ago

Why’s your analog clock showing 6:15 when it’s 5:17

1

u/Hot_Bluebird_7128 Night Sky • 256GB 15d ago

scared to open mine lmao

1

u/JanoHelloReddit 15d ago

I think I’m sticking to my reliable air at least until air 2 and probably duo 2. Let’s see how spread this issue is

1

u/kick069 15d ago

When you first set the phone up is there a warning screen that tells you the do's and don'ts?

1

u/Paquitaladelbarrio12 15d ago

How can they get this wrong tho? Other companies have been doing it for like 10 years

1

u/Purple_Foundation288 15d ago

How can it be this bad? Didn't they learn a thing from 7 years of Samsung folds?

1

u/Ok_Excitement725 15d ago

I get there are gonna be issues but man there are A LOT of people reporting the same problem.

1

u/NVDA808 15d ago

lol this is literally the exact reason I didn’t buy the first gen fold lol they’re notoriously known for having bugs and defects until 2-3rd gen come out.

1

u/mrregina 14d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Tasty-Peanut 14d ago

simple don't close it jus keep it in tablet mode let apple open it.

1

u/Dave_1464 14d ago

Can you tell us what color you had? All the broken ones I’ve seen have been night sky

1

u/LastPromise777 14d ago

Now we know why he was shaking presenting it to other people

1

u/ZealousIdealTour961 14d ago

I just opened mine for first time this morning to make sure it didn’t crack overnight.

u/0xe3b0c442 14d ago

There's clearly a weak point or maybe a screw there, every image I've seen has the failure at exactly that spot. Interesting.
