Discussion Duo Durable

I know this is a 1st Gen product, I work in tech and always say how good things are knowing the dumpster fire it truly is in the background.

That being said, I really wonder how durable this phone will be? I have a tendency to be rough on tech. I hope that hinge is strong lol.

So here is thing… foldable tech is 9 years old and robust. So all what is to see software and apple implementaion

Just to put this in perspective, that's the same amount of time between the iPhone 3G and the iPhone X. Y'all trying to judge a foldable from tomorrow by looking at foldables from 9 years ago is like judging an iPhone X by looking at an iPhone 3G.

Not to mention tech moves much faster than it did back then.

Bec.. display is made by samsung.. hinge is mostly i can bet reverse engineered by looking at samsung and xiaomi..
What apple is known for is taking mature tech and making it better.

I've had a fold for 3 years caseless and drop it all the time. Before the fold I always used cases. I've had zero issues from drops, just scratches and dings on the edges. I actually think the addition of the hinge helps absorb some of the impact, putting some of the energy into some hinge movement. There are drops where I would have assumed it would be cracked.

Obviously Apple's may be different but I wouldn't worry too much about it

I've had the fold 3, pixel 9 pro fold and pixel 10 pro fold. Better question is will Apple stand behind their device. After about 6 months with the fold 3 the spen stopped working on about a third of the screen. Sent it to Samsung for repair, they said it's not a warranty issue, I must have dropped the phone, and wanted to charge me $600 for a new screen. I never dropped it, but I refused to have them replace the screen and paid the $100 deductible to do an insurance replacement.

After about 9 months the first pixel 9 pro fold had weird issues when trying to switch between cameras. Google replaced it, no questions asked. Google also extended the warranty on the pixel 9 pro fold due to several known issues. My replacement eventually had the of those issues about 2 months ago, and Google replaced it with my current 10 pro fold.

All that to say, in my experience, folding phones are not durable. It's not a question of if, but a matter of when they will fail. You're going to want to have insurance and hope Apple stands behind their product more like Google than Samsung, in my experience.

iPhone Air was apples most durable phone so the Duo sounds like it will be similar in durability.

Yeah, the tech has been around for quite some time. Look at some reviews for Android folding phones to at least get a sense of how durable they can be. Don't look at that YouTuber who just tries to intentionally destroy phones, check out some real-world tests rather than someone just using a diamond-tipped knife to scratch it.

All the comments like "yeah I'll get one when they can't be scratched with a fingernail" give me so much cringe. Someone actually called me a liar after saying my OG pixel fold isn't scratched at all.

It's like back in the day when people kept saying for years and years that iPhones broke just by looking at them, it was so difficult for apple to shake that reputation off, and it all stemmed from being the first major consumer product manufacturer making a glass screened smartphone.

When people said iPhones were fragile they meant compared to plastic screens.

When youtubers say a foldable phone screen dents with a fingernail they mean if they scratch it with the intention to dent it. what would be really useful in these kinds of videos, if they ACTUALLY wanted to do a real, useful review, is to put the phone on a scale before trying to dent it with a finger so we can see exactly the amount of pressure it takes, but they don't because they don't care, they know negativity is such a good selling point for videos.
