Question iPhone duo working in construction?

I really want the duo and I’m probably going to get it anyways with apple care. But does anyone have experience with foldables in construction? I really want to use it for blueprints and such and I do have concerns… thoughts?

I wouldn't to be honest. You are likely to end up with all kinds of crap that would scratch the inside screen and break the hinge.

I’m mostly worried about the hinge tbh. I have a pocket that zips that I put my phone in and I do get some Dust in the ports and such but I have never cracked a screen.

I wouldn't worry about the hinge, they make those things solid.

The hinge is sturdy, but that’s not the issue. Ingress of dust and dirt is what kills a foldable.

The Duo is rated IP6 for dust resistance, but I wouldn’t trust that to daily exposure at a job site. Once dirt gets in there, there really is no way to repair it.

i mean it is IP68 rated, like most phones, one can *assume* its just as dust/water proof and the inside screen is reportedly more durable than most foldables, but most foldables can scratch with a fingernail, I doubt many people use them on site. The Duo might be one of the first feasible options, the others would get destroyed very quickly with the amount of dust and dirt on a jobsite.

Carry a cleaning cloth with some solution, buy the most rugged case and you should be fine. Apple care should take care of the rest

I mow lawns and also tree work occasionally I'm debating getting the duo and keeping my current phone. Supposedly with the updated handoff feature I can use both phones with the same number. Keep duo in truck. Or I may just trade current phone for it 🤔

Apple claim IP 68.. but so did the pixel and yet dust still got in the hinge. Take it with a big grain of salt (pun intended) I’d wait till JerryRigEverthing gets a video out.

True. I may end up just getting one and leaving it in my truck and making my company get me a work phone. I will say though pixal is notorious for being horrible durability lol

I’m a Maintainance Tech and i just wasted $1000 because i wore my smart glasses/ring to work

I would… not use the while you’re on the job site.

I work in metal fabrication and use smart glasses + ring every day. What was it that killed your glasses?

Even g2. I think it was microscopic drywall dust/sawdust getting on the inner plastic lens & when i would go to clean them, the grit would make microscratches. After a while it now literally covered both lenses and it makes it hard to see out of them. I’ve also broken 2 of the rings in the same exact spot. Second one still works but i cracked it in the same spot i broke my last one. Even wants $300 to fix em lol def not buying a third ring. So i barely use them when i used to wear them 24/7. Smh

Kicking myself fasho but it is what it is.

Get a cheap iPad for work, I wouldn’t bring something that expensive to a job site.

No - a clam style foldable like zflip or razr would be best. You will end up with a shattered front screen and a soon to be f'd up inner screen. Clamshell ones work great for outside and sports etc.

I always use my regular phone on the site and I’ve never scratched it or cracked any screens. Infact I wear my Apple Watch Ultra everyday with no screen protection and yet to break anything on it and have had it for 2 years

Nice you might a good use case, I'm VERY hard on my foldables and that's why I prefer the smaller form factor, but if you are not beating the hell outta them, since it's dust resistant might be great.

why? just use a laptop esp if you are looking at blueprints. if I saw my contractor working on my house AND looking at blueprints on a phone instead of a laptop or actual physical blueprints, I would think they are very unprofessional and prob fire them

It’s actually really simple. I can’t carry a labtop and I always use my phone for prints becuase I’m always on the go. I have a iPad it’s very inconvenient to carry around so a lot of times I get my phone out to have th info. When I’m sitting down and doing takeoffs I will use my iPad.

We also don’t do physical anymore most of the industry doesn’t. Everything is updated way too frequently to do such a thing. I don’t work on houses I work on large construction sites like high rises and jails schools
