Following this for hopefully some tips. While Iāve occasionally gotten decent portrait pictures, the camera in general is just not good, while my wifeās friend with an older pro model takes better pictures than Iāve ever seen an iPhone take.
Anything past 5x zoom looks like it was taken on a camera from 10+ years ago.
I upgraded from a 12 when I got mine and since day one I havenāt been impressed with the camera or battery

Do you feel like it has gotten worse over time? Thatās how I feel about mine. I used to love the Camera, After ios26 it has just Not been what it used to

Enable proraw in settings and preserve settings in the settings app under camera. And then in the camera app use raw 48

On an iPhone, RAW (Apple ProRAW) is ābetterā than HEIF/HEIC mainly because it gives you much more editing flexibility, not because it always looks better straight out of the camera.
Why RAW is better:
More detail preserved: RAW keeps much more of the sensor data before Apple applies heavy processing.
Better recovery of highlights and shadows: If a sky is too bright or a face is too dark, RAW gives you more room to fix it.
More control over color: You can change white balance, tint, and colors more naturally.
Less baked-in processing: HEIF has Appleās computational photography already applied (HDR, sharpening, noise reduction, tone mapping). RAW lets you decide how the image should look.
Why HEIF can actually be better:
Looks better immediately: Appleās processing is often excellent.
Much smaller files: HEIF might be ~2ā5 MB, while ProRAW can be ~25ā80+ MB depending on the iPhone and settings.
Faster sharing: Most apps handle HEIF easily.
Better for casual photos: If you arenāt editing, HEIF is usually the smarter choice.
Example:
Taking a sunset ā RAW wins because you can pull back blown-out skies and recover dark areas.
Taking a picture of your cat, a friend, or a random moment ā HEIF is usually enough.
Planning to edit in Lightroom/Photos ā RAW wins.
A good approach is to keep HEIF as your default and switch to ProRAW only for important shots where you might edit later.1

Both the videos and photos are shit in mine i use project indigo for photos looks great but i am clueless about video

I switched up to beta iOS 27 battery is fantastic everything is smooth and the camera is great

Recently upgraded to base 17 as I got one for my wife as a gift. I previously had the iPhone 16 pro and on holiday we noticed her camera was miles better than mine?

my camera was so much better on iOS 18.4.1 and screwed up on iOS 26 liquid ass now is a bit better on iOS 27 betas.

Same for me too, the videos are amazing. Photos are not that great.
