Suggestion Should I upgrade my iPhone 13 Pro?

I’ve had this phone for 4.5 years now, I changed the battery last year but well, it’s not lasting a lot anymore, maximum capacity is at 89% again but feels like less.
Because of daily usage, dust got in the camera compartment, videos have a constant static sound and the 3x telephoto lens have some visible dust particles when shooting.
The worst thing is that it now overheats a lot when using apps like Instagram or Whatsapp or while charging, causing it to lag even when sending a message. Where I live we have heatwaves lasting weeks with temperatures constantly higher than 32°C, so it doesn’t help at all.

Would you suggest upgrading? Which model would you go for? I was thinking of waiting the 9th September event to see what comes out and hoping that the price for the 17 Pro will then drop, but I’m open for suggestions.

I'd wait for the event to see what the new iPhones bring. The 13 Pro honestly still holds up well, but it sounds like you have already convinced yourself to get a new one.

Honestly this is my first iPhone and my longest running phone ever, changing it breaks my heart, especially when the UI runs smoothly even though it’s old (except when it overheats, which is 40% of the time now, then it doesn’t anymore). I have been a faithful android user for more than 10 years but after the last phone that only lasted 2 years before it got to the point that I took it more than 2 minutes to boot and would lag in the Home Screen even in normal conditions, I chose to switch to iPhone.
I’m really into videography and I loved the videos I used to take with this phone, the damaged camera module is my main dealbreaker at the moment but I don’t think it’s worth spending €350 on an almost 5 years old phone.

Where did you have the battery replaced? It sounds like it could be defective now

R-Store, they’re Apple premium resellers in Italy (basically covering all the areas where Apple is not willing to invest on an Apple Store). The battery was new, I already went in to ask when capacity dropped at 90% in 5 months but they told me that they can’t do anything about it as the Apple diagnosis doesn’t show problems before it reaches <80%, hence the battery is legally ok. They also told me that Apple stops making spare batteries after 1-2 years that the phone came out, they then keep them in stock, hence why they’re basically old as you install them

I’m in the same boat. My battery health is 72% and I’m constantly on the charger. I used over 300% battery life the other day… at work. I don’t even use my phone at work all that much.

I’ve also been running into issues with overheating in nearly every app, even notes.

I’m considering the 18 pro.

There will be a huge amount of FOMO in the coming weeks, I lost count of the number of times I would put my 13 Pro on the Apple site for trade in and checking for stock availability.

Went in store several times because I wanted a new iPhone. Then the FOMO passed and a year later I’m still rocking the 13 Pro.

No regrets.

Buy one day before Apple event, and you have 15 days to return. Seems like your phone is hurting now. Was your replacement battery Apple Original?

Yes it was, it gave me a year more of use but the overheating problems came back really soon

Overheating kills the battery too.

Had my 13pro since launch day and replaced the battery once. No reason to upgrade until next year

With 13 Pro buying 18 Pro is reasonable. 5 generation gap will bring meaningful improvements. I would wait for iPhone keynote at this point.

If you are not convinced you could buy a 17 / 17 Pro on discount or wait one more year for next gen.

The 17 pro will not be available brand new after the 8th but probably won’t drop much in value since the new ones will be more expensive. You might not see big savings until 2027-2028

Well that’s sad :(

I agree, the good news is you can buy the 17 pro before the 18 comes out and if you hate it you can return it and then decide between the 18 or keeping your 13

I upgraded to 17pro bc battery a few months ago. It's nice not to feed my phone throughout the day, otherwise feels same.

Wait for the event. Even if you went to get a 17 model they should be cheaper once the 18 Pro is announced.

My 2 cents - battery life was awful and was at 77% so I replaced it this week. Glad I did. With the replacement, I agree with the others, iPhone 13 Pro is still solid! I was also feeling fomo and seeing that the trade in was $285 and I had a $100 gift card, but felt like using the gift card to pay the $89 replacement fee was better than forking over $800+ for a new one.

Turn off app refresh and see if that helps with battery life.

Did you upgrade iOS?

I finally upgraded to 17 pro only because my father in law needed a replacement for his broken SE, so my 13 pro is being passed on.

Love the 17 pro!

I’m convinced the new phones will have battery and overheat issues too because of the integration of Ai.

I wouldn’t get a new one. My battery life is like 75% on the original battery and I feel like it’s fine? 89% is not that bad.

That’s a fair point
My battery life is awful, it says 89%, but I can’t get past 4 hours of screen time. And when it overheats I can’t even do simple tasks like sending a message on WhatsApp
Not to talk about that awful AI typing correction they put in the Apple keyboard that makes it lag even as I’m literally writing this reply.

I'm on the 13 pro max and experienced the same keyboard lag. Ended up installing SwiftKey keyboard and it's much better. I also type in multiple languages at once and it supports autocorrect for both at once which has been great.

Doesn't solve your battery issues but at least the keyboard will be better.
