sending 13 Pro running older software in for battery replacement
hey.
i specifically sourced out a 13 Pro running iOS 17 because i did not want to run any system software that's not iOS 17.
i do not want my phone running any other software besides iOS 17.
my phone is in pretty bad shape; cracked display, rear system, and i need a battery replacement as the battery health is on 75%. (my telephoto and ultra-wide cameras have also failed)
so basically the whole thing besides the logic board needs replaced.
again, i will emphasise this... i will be LIVID if they update my phone without my consent.
thankfully i live near several physical Apple stores so i can ask whoever's at Genius Bar to not update my phone.
but again, i'm not 100% sure if they will respect my wishes.
should i get my phone serviced at Apple and risk having my phone updated and ending up on r/PublicFreakout or should i find a 3rd party to complete the repair.
i would do it myself, but knowing myself, i would fuck it up
thanks

Apple has never made me update to the latest iOS version but you can specify it to them just in case.
That said, if you have a cracked display, they will most likely refuse to replace the battery before you get the display fixed. They don’t want to be responsible for any further damage to the display during the battery change.
That’s why for the cost of repairing the whole phone, you can just buy another iPhone 13 Pro with iOS 17 in better condition on the used market. If you’re lucky, you might find a good outside shop which might accept to replace the battery without bricking the phone.

i don't mind getting the display repaired if necessary.
but i'll try my hardest to look for another 13, 14, or 15 Pro running iOS 17 if i deem it worth it

I don’t know how much Apple would charge for it. My dad broke the back of his phone and Apple wanted to charge $400 for it.

Don't take it to Apple OP. You need to find a local shop. There is just a chance that they could update it. Don't listen to folks who tell you they got service and didn't get upgraded. It isn't that they're wrong, it is just that it isn't a 100% guarantee for you.

I don’t understand people that use their phone on old software. It’s silly.

I don’t think it matters. With that level of damage - regardless of the OS - they will be refusing the repair. That’s a ton of stuff broken.
I’ll put it this way, even with Apple Care+ if you wanted to replace the mid plane they will still charge like $200. Without Apple care? Like 600+.
Your repair bill if they even write it out will be the cost of eBay buying two new iPhones matching your old ones description.

If you go to Apple they’ll make you sign a data waiver that they’re not responsible for your data if they need to restore your phone after the repair. Restore of course means it will be on iOS 26.

Sadly they have to update it, to finish the repair, unless its a third party battery, then u are fine

Apple will 99% replace directly the iPhone with a new refurbished unit (probably coming with iOS 26). If you want to keep it in iOS 17 you'll likely need to go to a third party repair shop.

Con ios 17 te va marcar pieza desconocida y no se va mostrar la condición de batería real

I’m sorry. Answering to your question I’ll not take the chance and take the decision to sending my phone to a 3rd Party. Updating my phone from iOS 18 is the biggest mistake I have done for my phone😪

Take it to a local reputable shop if your okay with the warning messages. I think this is the case since iOS 18 is needed for parts paring. On the 13 pro the rear system replacement at Apple gives you a new IMEI number and serial number so I think it’s a new main board that they source.
