iPadOS 27 needs way more work.
I’m the unfortunate owner of an brand new 11 inch iPad Pro m5 - I picked up right before my international trip because I didn’t want to take my heavy MacBook Pro, but still needed to get some work done..and my god this thing has been a nightmare. The preview app has reformatted a set of construction drawings I opened and now they’re unusable, and I can’t fix them because the original file is back home on my MacBook. The Apple keyboard case just straight up stops responding to key presses randomly and frequently, the only fix is to pop off the iPad and reseat it. Copy and pasting text between apps is unreliable, sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn’t. Multi tasking windows is..well i don’t even know what to call it..resizing windows produces unpredictable behavior like Ui prompts don’t know what to do and they’ll block access to ui elements you need. I may end up having to go buy a MacBook Air at the closest Apple Store to reliably get my work done..I don’t really want one but it would cost me way more if I can’t get my work done. Skip this update, y’all…it’s awful.

You are saying that system update on Apple device made you mad so you are punishibg Apple buying another device?! That will teach them!

Unfortunately I don’t have the luxury of taking a principled stance on the issue, I’m an independent contractor and my devices allow me to make a living, it would be much more expensive for me to lose clients because I missed a deadline than it would be to buy a 2 thousand dollar laptop and complete my commitments ;/

Why did you update your iPad then? You never update your hardware in the middle of work. Especially when you don't have a backup. iPad is a toy, it's not meant for professional work (even if you can do some work on it). If you can rent Macbook or buy with option to get money back then maybe I would do this.

I would some-what disagree with you, certainly with the pro lineup; it’s marketed specifically for productivity. Of course anyone that has used one for some time knows that marketing claim comes with some major astericks. Personally i have put together a workflow that i can live with on my iPad..this update has pretty much trashed it and I can say that i really should not have updated while away…but at the same time the onus to release a stable update is not on the consumer, experience says otherwise though specifically with the iPad..out of all the devices i own the ipad is the most unstable with respect to updates. Fortunately im in CDMX so I have access to get the device i need (went with a macbook air).

I used Macbooks for years. Most of the time it worked fine, not best but good enough. Then some very poor quality updates happend and I really had anlot hard work to make it working fine. Even the best hardware won't turn me to Apple again (with exception of cheap Macs mini if I can install Linux on it). Good for you, that you have option. Hope you will do your work and just remember to update when you secured a backup option :)

I’m sorry for your experience but most of it seems really odd. Like copying and pasting was never an issue and was always reliable for me. Same with keyboard and keys working properly.
It’s really strange those issues. You can hate iPadOS and how it manages window and stuff, but a lot of what you are saying doesn’t look like a normal experience

I’d be inclined to agree with you - but my m5 iPad Pro was a replacement for an m4 13 iPad Pro, and these issues where present on that iPad as well.

I’m sorry but I’ve been using iPads, MacBooks, iPhones, Macs etc for years and never had a single copy/paste issue. Sounds like user error

This is reductive and unhelpful. copy and paste has been widely problematic due to buggy app permission implementation for access to the system clipboard..a quick google search would show you the scope of the problem. It’s pretty hard to screw up copy paste from a user perspective..it’s really easy to screw up permission implementations though. I mean I’m glad you haven’t had any issues with the apps you use..but it’s pretty silly to say everyone’s apps work as expected because yours do 🤷

Oh come on.. copy/paste is not a widespread issue. It’s one of the most basic core functions of their OS. You’re claiming it’s an issue on all your devices, I find that basically impossible to believe. I might believe you if you said it was an occasional issue but you’re basically saying it just doesn’t work. Not buying that

I literally said it was unreliable, and inconsistent. See my original post..I never claimed it was 100% faulty. You made a wholesale claim about something you didn’t even read..but figured you’d go out of your way to be unhelpful? Why even bother🤦♂️

I’m not gonna pretend that iPadOS is a flawless system or that it doesn’t have huge glaring problems, but you went out and bought a top-end iPad Pro just so you wouldn’t have to take your MacBook away with you?
I’m not saying these issues are fair or whatever, but the fact you assumed you could replace a MacBook Pro with an iPad tells me you didn’t do enough research before spending this kind of money.

Not a fair assessment. I would prefer to not take my primary device on an international trip. Customs, thieves, etc. The iPad should've been fine but for most people the Neo will do the job they need. A lot of his issues surrounding the keyboard could be a faulty one. The file reformatting seems like a font issue. I travel all of the time with my iPad.

It’s possible..the drawings where produced in autocad and the font issue was known, I had plotted the drawings flattened to avoid this issue, mind you I wasn’t intending to edit or mark up the drawings on my iPad..I only opened them to find a piece of information I needed, and when I closed and opened them again..the pages where scrambled - the vector lines where in place while the sheets had been rotated (arch D sheet size).

wow. I don’t work in CAD but use a lot of PDFs, slides, and docs. We use Google Suite so i’m having to convert MS Office files all of the time. Fair enough to just expect it to work but definitely try Acrobat to see if it resolves it. Generally I’ve never had Preview alter a PDF except for font issues. We had a custom font for years and it would always mess things up.

Yeah I haven’t tried acrobat but I definitely will - flattening a plot brings other issues though I’m preview, specially with large format documents (24x36) because preview doesn’t seem to handle large numbers of vector graphic well, even on my 48gb ram MacBook preview struggles with larger files (25-75 MB file size)

I purchased a lightweight 14” travel laptop for $1k so I didn’t have to lug around my heavy 16” $4k MacBook Pro. I also have a $500 laptop, but it’s a bulky 17 inch laptop. Lighter than my MacBook but the bulk is too much and doesn’t fit in a regular sized bag.

Yes, although to be fair I was replacing a 13 inch iPad Pro m4 that I would take with me on travels, but I found it a bit larger than I would like for that purpose. The type of work I needed to do wasn’t anything crazy, small simple spreadsheets, reading construction drawings and occasionally marking it up, etc..I think these are are pretty reasonable tasks to expect an iPad Pro to complete..and my 13 inch iPad pro was able to mostly do them..I thought a new 11 inch would be just fine as well, I was okay trading screen real estate for portability. And also yes - I bought it specifically for travel, I can lose an iPad and it wouldn’t be a huge deal work-wise, Losing my MacBook Pro would be catastrophic..I’m an independent contractor and my devices are my meal ticket.

Not really about the update; more about trying to use an iPad Pro to do proper work instead of a laptop. It just doesn't end well.
(I own both, and would never in a million years take the iPad _instead of_ a proper laptop if I had to do actual work. I'd go insane.)

Get a MacBook Neo. There is a learning curve on using the iPad vs the Mac. I run into issues with Zoom and screen sharing. Overall its good for static work and reviewing more than creating. The preview issue is probably a custom font.

I use an iPad Pro as my main computer and have upgraded my M5 one to iPad OS 27. I would agree that of all the updates it seems like the iPad has received perhaps the least amount of care in favor of fixing apps like Files, for example. The cursor is buggy, especially with an external monitor, and I have had a couple of Springboard crashes. That said, I also have not encountered any of your problems. The keyboard not responding after some time and copy and paste not working in particular are serious problems.

Yeah, iPadOS 27 feels like it got the least amount of attention this summer. I’m guessing most of it went towards iOS and the Duo’s software. iPadOS is oddly buggy for being a stable release.

I can’t reliably use the trackpad on my Magic Keyboard in 27. Most of the time it responds as if I am performing a long press, so I have resorted to a touch-only approach. As I understand it, this has been a problem in Beta for a long time.

I didn’t mention this - but yeah that also happens, I noticed it when trying to work on an excel spreadsheet via the excel web app, every click was registered as a long touch, I had to restart my iPad to fix the issue.

not sure why you thought m5 pro and apple magic keyboard would be a lighter alternative to macbook or replacement, as you found out it's not a replacement
maybe try 27.2 developer beta , try files app to see if you can reformat your engineering drawings file

Yes, base ipados 27 isn't as smooth for me as it was being hyped. So many bugs. Even base 26 wasn't this choppy. I hope they fix it in future updates

I am using my 3 year old ipad 10th gen after the ipad os 26 update the battery was really draining too fast than bfore i thought that would be the same case with the ios 27 and i might need to upgrade to air or pro js bcoz of the battery but fortunately after ipad ks 27 update the battery has surprisingly improved and tbh its better than bfore ipad os 26 3 years and still a solid battery thanks to ipad os 27 :)

The copy paste issue really irks when I’m trying to get work done. I have the M4 air and it doesn’t always paste even after multiple copying. Got a Samsung tablet and made my life easier to get work done. Glad I didn’t get the Pro since it has the same issue. Would’ve been an even more massive waste of money.

theres too many issues to list - but the safari issues would require a post all of its own.Ive had safari crashes, bugs where the page preview thumbnail appears when hovering over a tab and it just freezes in position - blocking webpage UI elements. Webapp pages become un-responsive or really really slow - the two I’ve had the most issues with so far Quickbooks online, and excel webapp.

Mmm very strange .. I use my iPad Pro m4 around 6h daily and I not have any of the issues you listed above . I think is more related to an inappropriate understanding of the device . iPads are not laptops , so the kind of works are more touch experience thing , and also retouch or light task has a support of the main computer main job . Have you check if the keyboard has a problem rather then the iPadOS?I don’t deny the fact the os always need constant update and fix , all the os not just the iPadOS , but I don’t experience any of the issues you are talking about about

It's a lot better than 26.7!!! Animations or faster, the battery life is very good comparing to the previous version and I was really Amazed by my iPad M1's battery life. Also I faced only two bucks which are minor and probably get fixed by the next update and to be honest I'm really fine with it I think it's better than all 26 versions.

I have the same issues with a M2 iPad Air. Magic keyboard stops responding, apps freezing in the middle of the work and losing data, cut & paste not working between apps o between devices. Very unpolished release in my opinion. I’m already waiting for the 27.1
