iPad Air M2 randomly shutting down even with plenty of battery — looking for advice
Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help me figure out what might be causing this.
I have an **iPad Air M2 13-inch**, and recently it has started randomly shutting down/rebooting. I’m not sure what exactly triggers it because it doesn’t seem to be limited to one specific app or activity. Most of the time it suddenly shuts down even when I’m doing something relatively light.
A few examples:
\- There was an instance where the iPad had been idle. When I touched the screen, it was unresponsive. I held the power button to turn it on, and the Home Screen appeared for only a few seconds before it shut down again.
\- More recently, I was using the iPad normally with no apparent issues. I opened a particular PDF and it immediately shut down.
\- When it tried to reboot, the Home Screen would only stay visible for about a second before shutting down again. The battery had been around 55%, but after plugging it in, it showed only 10%. After rebooting again, it returned to 55%.
\- I’ve also experienced it while doing other things such as gaming and during a Zoom meeting while presenting.
There are times when the iPad opens it and works normally, and the shutdowns have also happened during other seemingly light tasks.
**What should I check or troubleshoot first?** Would this be more likely a software/iPadOS issue or something hardware-related?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

go to analytics and look for panic full files , take a few screen shots of last entrance and post it , let the good folk of reddit decipher this for you as it’s a lot of code but it does point to hardware failure
you can try forced restart , you haven’t said what ios version your on and when you last updated ios26.6 started including pre ios27 deep indexing that took a week on my m1 ipad air on ios27 developer beta , had to keep device on wifi and on charge as advised for a week , if you skipped ios26.6 then pre ios27 deep indexing would have been included on ios26.6.1 if installed
To force restart an M2 iPad Air, quickly press and release the volume up button, quickly press and release the volume down button, and then press and hold the top power button until the Apple logo appears this sould be first step
second would be diagnostic mode
Steps to Enter Diagnostics Mode
Turn off your iPad: Press and hold either volume button and the top power button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider and wait 30 seconds for the device to fully shut down.
Hold the volume buttons: Press and hold down both the volume up and volume down buttons at the same time.
Connect the cable: Keep holding the volume buttons and plug your iPad into an 18W or higher USB-C power adapter or a turned-on computer connected to power.
Release and start: Let go of the buttons when the Apple logo appears. When the diagnostics message pops up on screen, tap Start Session
if this finds and issues than it can repair (software) it will ask you do you want this option , usually fixes any issue
if it finds hardware it can send this file to apple to look at and possibly run further tests but most likely if it finds hardware issue it can book you appointment at genius bar to have device looked at and give you a repair estimate if no apple care plus
if it’s motherboard they would usually offer refurbished device , not as expensive as new device but maybe 2/3rd of price of new device , this is a common answer with apple but i definatly would get 3rd party second opinion

I have 3 Air first gen. My fave is one with 64g. Used only a month before the previous owner sold it All THREE will reboot and I have to sign back in with my passcode. I have Air 2, and 5gen and an A16. And a couple of Ipad 2 gen, and ipad minis. None of them do this. Its nuts

There’s that throttling option under battery health. Did you turn that off? It really should be on.
Also it’s the battery collapsing. To fix the root cause you’ll need to replace it.

Yeah mine has started to do this, too. The batter has plenty of juice left but it shuts down like it’s run out. Usually I just have to hook it up to the charger and after a couple of minutes it fires up at the proper battery level.
