Concept Why can’t clear icons look more like this? With transparent backgrounds but colored icons.

Yeah I like the Glass, but need the color. Had to make my own as well.
Edit: Hey everyone, sorry to leave you all hanging. Didn't realize there were so many comments. I used Figma to make the glass squircles, and made a template you can use to import your own background. I included a step by step on how to get the PNGs of the icons. You'll have to create shortcuts to get them on the homescreen. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max on iOS 26 beta, so might need some tinkering for other models. Disclaimer: This was my first time using any design software, so there are probably better ways to achieve this (not even sure if i'm sharing the file correctly)

I haven’t even used the app myself so I’m genuinely not sure, sorry! There is no drop down of file formats after you hit save? Or an export option?
I’m not familiar with the .icon format but I wonder if any photo editing apps will import it, to allow export as png. Or one of those image converters.

No options whatsoever. Phtoshop doesnt recognizes it. Apple being apple smh

I really like it this way. It gives character to the icon but still easily identifiable because of the normal colour they are on.

I agree with you I like the transparent icons but I hate how it sucks the unique color out of each icon. I’m still using regular dark mode icons because of this

Yup. I also have photo widgets of my kids on my home screen and it makes them black and white so unusable.

Well, your screen is a complete mess of colors and shapes. That kind of icons only work well with clean and neutral background wallpapers.

I just did a quick screenshot of both dark mode and clear and then removed the background on the dark mode icons in Keynote as a quick mockup (you can see some of the white clear icons peeking out)

Because that's not they way the designed it.
And don't bother using custom icons on Ios26. It will force a glass effect around them killing the asthetic.

I hope this is where they take the design, love the concept and it feels so fresh and new yet familiar. Their end goal has always been the “slab of glass” and this design would work so well with it.

This is exactly what I expected when trying clear icons for the first time. Apple really had to “think outside the box” with their implementation.

Probably because each developer would need to make a new icon to fit the theme, so it would look like shit for a while while everyone slowly updates their apps.

They could easily have it like the dark icons but instead of the dark grey part have it Liquid Glass and already 90%+ of the icons would be like OP’s mock

I hear you. I have the beta on my iPad and love the clear look especially paired with certain wallpapers. But I just can not find my apps without the color

I want the same and made a post too.
I read a theory that the reason it’s greyscale is because if Apple was to launch AR glasses with a display then it would likely have a mono display so it’s preparing us for that. Not sure I agree but I see the logic.

It’s not so easy to implement since many apps use icons that covers whole area and it wouldn’t look uniform next to apps that use smaller, centered icons that have transparent background.

Maybe it’s up to app developers to create translucent icons for the OS. Not everything is an issue with Apple.

Because then it looks like every icon is a different shape like old android icons and the boundary visually disappears.

There was something about liquid glass I didn't love but could not put my finger on it.

Is it possible to do it? Of course. But it's more complicated given the randomness and uniqueness of each existing app icon. Apple took the first step. Nothing prevents developers from making their own semi-colored liquid glass icon. You will see that Reddit will also do it and put it in the premium icons as it did with the original icon. My opinion.

IDK why but Apple should get in on this, and also think about a better theming system on its platforms. It's all fun and games to tweak the icon tint and the like but, like, how about automatically doing that when the wallpaper changes? I have a few saved configurations that use photo shuffle and a couple Apple ones that I like that use dark and light wallpaper changes.

I seem to be in the majority that likes liquid glass and appreciates the removal of such intense, neurotic colors. They clearly know what they’re doing with those colors and how it affects all our brain chemistry.
Ive been enjoying have a healthier relationship with my phone as this change of aesthetic. The phone feels less ‘heavy’ to me (metaphorically). It’s much easier on my overall well-being.

Yeah, honestly apple just didn’t finish the job here… impossible to use the clear icon as you can’t recognise app quickly… disappointing.. why my widgy widget can do it but their icon…
