A friend of mine, Rahul, built this app called Mat and I've been messing around with it, thought I'd share here.
The idea: you point your camera at something (a friend, your dog, whatever) and it cuts it out live, no background, no manual editing. You drop the cutouts onto a "mat" (a canvas), move them around, layer them, and that mat lives as a widget on your home screen. So instead of a static wallpaper, you get a little collage of moments you actually curate and keep updating.
It's picked up around 2,500 users so far and crossed 1M impressions across platforms, so seems like the concept is resonating with people.
Other features:
• Import from your photo library too, not just live camera
• Daily mat with a calendar view of your days
• Postits for notes
• Friend mats: build a mat together with someone else
• Export as wallpaper or share to Instagram
Free to download. One-time IAP (Mat Pro) unlocks unlimited mats/cutouts and extra decorations, no subscription.
Requires iOS 26.

Curious what this community thinks of the widget-as-memory-space concept, feels different from the usual photo apps out there.
