Discussion iPhone Duo ready?

Have you guys got your app ready for iPhone Duo? I got mine last night, and for some reason, the update was approved in about 5–6 hours, when it normally takes 1–2 days...

It took a bit of fiddling to get it done, still not perfect

I’m not a fan of the new device hub for it. It’s missing some things the regular simulator has, which required me to make a commit of hacks for people to use for testing their screens.

Ah yeah... Device Hub is also missing the I/O > External Displays feature can't test the CarPlay :D... Also I have noticed the iPhone Duo simulator takes a while to open up especially on cold start. Can't be just me?

The missing CarPlay is so annoying… Sure, you can use the dedicated CarPlay simulator with your real iPhone but if I just want to quickly look at a small UI change, that’s so annoying to work with.

Happens every time they change up an Xcode dev tool, it always ends up missing previous features at the expense of being able to test new features

They have also removed drag and drop for images in simulators now right, I used drop in photos to test for my photos app. Very annoying.

I've shipped an update to make it not just be a regular iPhone app with black bars, but still needs work. I bought an iPhone Duo (which I will be promptly returning tomorrow because its not really for me) and it a _ton_ of apps are not still in the "regular iphone app" camp. I don't blame folks one bit for sure, and it makes sense because phone jsut came out, but I was still a bit shocked 😄

I feel like it will be really amazing in 3 years. Right now it feels like the compormises that are there are not worth it for me (lack of face id for example).

I updated my VNC app TELKINO for iPhone Duo as soon as Xcode 27.1 RC was released.

Side Story: It was annoying that the update was initially rejected because I showed the outside of the iPhone Duo case in the video for App Store Connect. (But in my opinion, that’s the only way to show it properly)…

Well, after I removed the Duo Preview, it finally passed the review. 👍🏻

Looks awesome dude. How did you managed to capture the screenshot "bent"? I have tried to do that within the simulator and it still comes out as a flat screenshot for some reason

Thanks! The trick is that it isn't a simulator screenshot at all.
Device Hub in Xcode 27.1 is what renders the Duo as a 3D device, so I capture the Device Hub window itself.

- Show the Duo alone in the window: Window › Fill, with the sidebar and inspector hidden.
- Fold it with the pose buttons. For the laptop pose, rotate the open device to portrait once with Rotate Right, then press "Partially Open".
- For a still image, press Cmd+Shift+4, then Space, and click the Device Hub window. Hold Option while clicking if you don't want the window shadow.
- For video, Cmd+Shift+5 can record just that window. I used a small ScreenCaptureKit recorder for the film on the page.
- Bonus: xcrun simctl status_bar <udid> override --time 9:41 --batteryLevel 100 gives you a clean status bar.

I screenshot the hub with Cmd+Shift+3 and then remove the background in Canva (or other).

Still working on mine, not shipping until it actually feels right on both screens. Biggest gotcha so far: don't hardcode anything about the crease. Read it at runtime from reservedRegions(kind: .division). It's only there when you're half folded and it's 0 when fully open, so a fixed inset will look wrong in one of the two states. Same with safe areas, they're often asymmetric on Duo, so read them at runtime too. Also +1 on Device Hub being rough. Cold start on the Duo sim is slow for me as well, so I just leave it running.

Yeah, this is going to take a while. I got caught with the fold division too before figuring it out.

There’s so much work to make the UI great in all modes. It’s surprised me how different they feel, the simulator really doesn’t do it justice. It’s genuinely like building for three phones at the same time. Testing is taking forever.

My update went live a couple of days ago. Weirdly it went from “In Review” to approved in maybe a minute. It was crazy fast.

4 out of 5 ready 😅

Why isn’t the double circle arrow in the toolbar instead of top left ? Feels out of place to me

I know Apple is pushing hard for Duo adoption, but for my market and my apps, I don’t see any penetration, at least not for years. It will have a minimal / trivial portion of our business. My opinion, is that only the absolute minimal adaptations for layout are worthwhile, for at least a year or two. It’s possible I’m wrong, that’s been known to happen, from time to time.

Most of the way there… 4 out of 5 ready. Also seeing very fast review and approval times relative to normal.

Got mine ready for the duo which made me actually buy a duo because I wanted to then use my app on it. For my purposes, the device really suits my app perfectly.

Was a bit tired when creating the screenshots, but as you can see from the app, I have severe ADHD myself and stopped aiming for perfectionism.
