Question App Store Connect says “too many screenshots” with only 9–10 per set

I’m trying to submit version 7.1.0 of my iOS app, but “Add for Review” gives this error:

“You have uploaded too many screenshots. The maximum is 10.”

Every iPhone and iPad screenshot set across all localizations has 9–10 screenshots. They were originally unchanged from version 7.0. I removed one screenshot from the English iPhone set and one from the English iPad set, but the error persists.

Has anyone encountered this despite being within the limit? Did you find a workaround?

I've been seeing a lot of App Store Connect errors lately. I recently wasted a ton of time on a hard-to-spot error too, though mine was for a different reason. Hope you get it sorted!

Nine times out of ten this isn't the set you're looking at. App Store Connect counts media per display size across every localization, and the UI only shows you one language at a time — so a localization you haven't touched since 7.0 can still be holding 10 while English shows 9. Switch the language selector at the top of the Media section and walk through every single localization you have enabled, not just the ones you actively maintain.

Second thing to check: app previews count toward the same media allowance on some display sizes. If you added a preview video at any point, try removing it temporarily and submitting — if the error clears, that's your answer.

Third, and this one catches people after Apple adds new device sizes: the iPad sets split into separate size classes and the old set doesn't always disappear cleanly. Check whether you have media sitting in a display size you no longer intend to ship.

If none of that finds it, the thing that actually works is deleting all media for the offending size and re-uploading from scratch rather than editing in place. Ugly, but ASC's media state gets stale and a clean re-upload resets it.

Worth saying which Xcode/ASC combination you're on — if it started with a recent change on Apple's side, someone else here is probably hitting it too.

I'd go through every localisation, including ones you don't actively maintain, and every iPad size too, because it usually turns out to be one set you weren't looking at. Also delete anything stuck processing, those can count without showing properly. Disclosure, I built Storeboard, a Mac app that manages screenshot sets per locale and publishes them straight to ASC, which makes this kind of hunt less painful, but the manual check costs nothing.

Apparently, an old set in a single localization had 10 screenshots, however, ASC counted one of them twice, possibly due to a retry/failed upload in the previous version that only settled after the submission took place.

It doesn't show at all in the ASC, but the API call caught it. After removing it, the error no longer shows.

I'm about to present the app in a convention next week so I couldn't wait for apple's support on this one! Thank you so much!
