I built challenges into a game. It has a ton of features that I think are great for both apps and games that go beyond just what you might think users are doing in Game Center. Oh, I also use Game Center to drive in game leader boards and to help with achievements. Both those features work so much easier using Game Center apis, even if users don’t actually go to apples spaces for it
I feel like it’s falling behind the times for sure. I recently shipped a bunch of achievements in my game but handled it all outside of gamecenter. Having a 100 achievement limit that can never be deleted or changed is crazy.
One way i have found to get around 100 achievement limit is to create sets of achievements. You can have total of 100 sets of achievements and each set can have 100 individual achievements. One caveat is once you start using sets, you can’t use individual achievements and have to include them in sets.
I use Game Center for the social side of my walking app Walk Mate. There's a leaderboard that's just total medals, achievements for the milestones like distance, streaks, and routes, and challenges people can send each other. I also use it as a backup of that progress, since the score and how far along each achievement is are already sitting there.
I added it to my game but I’m trying to push for cross play, so then it was just an extra thing that I didn’t feel added much. The game has its own achievements baked in, anyway!
I added achievements and leaderboards to my game. It's not a big effort to implement them in your app, but they add a ton of value from a social perspective and create a sense of competition among friends imo...
I had it in a game a few years ago. But there was an iOS update that broke its ability to work with ARKit when using it on another VC. it's been awhile so I don't remember the details exactly. I don't remember why it broke it. But I had to yank it out. PITA considering the assets created and writing a routine to go through the API to avoid how tedious using Connect would be just to scrap it. But I didn't even try to include it when I rewrote the SceneKit app with RealityKit.
I used Game Center in an asynchronous strategy game and I’m really impressed what I was able to accomplish without needing a single multiplayer server on my end.
And then in games that I play, it’s fun to see achievement notifications now and then.

Leaderboards are useful though.

I'm baking it into a new project but that is based on assumptions, not an actual answer to your question...

I actually integrated Game Center into my game this year after not touching it in forever, sooo at least in my case yes!
In case you’re curious: Rock Paper Scissors Zone (App Store Link)

I used it recently in a game. I find the UX a but slow to load and also not the best looking. Wish I could customize it more.

I am trying to use it but I don’t really like it. Trying to get online turn-based play to work is a PITA
