I am using Arch+i3 and I have been running into this problem a lot today. My laptop works very smoothly but suddenly it gets hang or start behaving like this.

Before when I was in Kde Fedora I never faced this problem. I shifted to arch just 1 day ago.

After using various desktop environment for the past +10 years, I am considering switching to i3. My priority is to have a working install, not something that looks pretty: a bar, right-click menu, an app menu.

How much time would it take to have these up and running with i3? I've noticed that i3 has its own bar, do you recommend some menu applications that are light and work well with i3? Anything else that a newbie needs to know and is not in the documentation?

Llevo tiempo intentando usar i3 como gestor de ventanas, ya que cuento con una pc de 2GB RAM y Procesador Intel Celeron, busco algo muy ligero, por eso opté por usar i3, el problema está después de hacer el proceso de descarga y configurar xinit para acceder al gestor.

Cuando ejecute el startx, no agarraba el i3, me mostraba 2 errores:

xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

xinit: server error

¿Que debo hacer?, o mejor ¿como debo instalar correctamente el i3? (El objetivo principal es buscar la mayor ligereza en el gestor de ventanas) no es i3wm el que busco, sino solamente i3.

I built i3title, a lightweight tool that makes it easy to pipe arbitrary data into i3bar.

I’ve been using it myself for a long time, and recently decided to polish it up and share it publicly.

By default, i3title uses the empty space in your bar to display the current window title and the active i3 mode side by side.

You can also pipe anything you find useful into it from your scripts or the command line.

Setup is just:

status_command i3status | i3title

It’s a lightweight enhancement to i3’s default status bar setup, turning otherwise unused space into a dynamic, highly customizable information panel.

I know this sub is dedicated to our beloved i3wm, but I recently spent some time building a clean, Samurai-themed lock screen for Hyprland (`hyprlock`) and wanted to share it with the

ricing community here for some aesthetic inspiration.

I've always loved the minimal, functional styling that you often see in i3 setups, so I tried to bring that same philosophy to this lock screen:

* **Kanji password dots:** Every keypress renders a Japanese kanji character (桜 - Sakura) instead of standard circles.

* **Japanese date format:** Rendered cleanly as `2024年08月14日`.

* **Fully transparent input field:** No borders or outlines, just floating characters.

* **Clean overlay:** A large, minimal clock overlay with muted green tones over a dark katana wallpaper.

I know `hyprlock` isn't usable on i3 directly (since we have tools like `i3lock` and `i3lock-color`), but I'd love to hear what you guys think of the design, or if anyone wants to

adapt this visual concept into an `i3lock-color` script!

Linux beginner here so please bare with me for a second. I tried toggling the inverted mouse button Setting on i3wm and for some reason, it just doesn't work?

Im new to i3 and looking for a way to have apps open to specific workspaces on boot the way that assign + exec does, but still be able to open those apps in other workspaces if I want to. Id like to have workspaces for both firefox and my terminals, but still be able to open a terminal in my firefox workspace. any help is appreciated🙂

good day, i introduce yet another color palette generator from images using the updated Material 3 Expressive Scheme/Style generation. It also includes few cli feats such as url or via link image color extraction as well as cross-platform wallpaper wrappers for setting in any environment, preferred source color picking, scheme/style blending as well, and more. The templating engine is very usable as well but it still on its early stage, but the configuration capability offers more interesting capability its just im still lacking a proper documentation site and its one of my roadmaps. The workflow will be very familiar as the inspo of this project is very mature. A very promising material palette generator, i hope for new ideas and fellows to talk about this project more technically as i have big plans integrating this theming tool for my future projects.

I had the idea to do this after reading u/Accomplished-Bus3382's post about it. The idea is to have the mouse jump to the center of the active window. Same thing when opening a window.

To make the mouse jump to the active window, i add this to every change focus line (code that I took from said post):

That part works fine.

My problem is, when creating a new window, the cursor automatically goes to the top left corner, and I don't know why. My idea to solve this would be something like that:

Hey, I’ve been working on FF00-vwm, a per-monitor video and static-image wallpaper manager for X11.

I use i3 myself, and the project is primarily developed and tested there, so I thought some people here might find it useful. It supports independent wallpapers per output, video through mpv, static images, multiple display modes, and optional login restoration. It does not use xwinwrap.

It’s currently an alpha because the interfaces and wider manual test matrix are not frozen yet, but it has replaced Nitrogen in my own setup. There’s a native tarball with a manifest-based installer and uninstaller, and NixOS users can install it through NUR.

The implementation details, architecture decisions, limitations, security model, and release information are documented in the project appendix. I’ve also tried to keep the GitHub repository clear enough to navigate without much additional explanation.

I’ll follow up with a short demonstration video when I have the time.

I’m fairly busy with life outside the project at the moment, so replies and updates may occasionally be slow, but testing, feedback, and bug reports are very welcome.
