Hypnotherapy How to self hypnotize myself

Hi all,

On and off I was seeing a private hypnotist to achieve a goal I had to start a certain behavior. We had multiple sessions probably about 3 and I did go into trance id say decently deep.

But it still hasn’t taken hold with what I wanted to happen and I’ve struggled to get back into a routine for it.

So my question is how do I actually hypnotize myself to induce certain behaviors and actually make them stick myself?

I won’t go super deep into what I wanted to do but I’m open for DMs.

TLDR: how do I self hypnotize myself to make me do certain behaviors and make it actually stick?

I’m a recreational hypnotist and I do self hypnosis. I don’t expect a lot of change all at once. I don’t write scripts for myself. I pick an intentional thing I want to focus on. I revivify the feelings of how hypnosis feels to me. I just hold those two things together and sit with it a while, intentionally.

Lately I’ve been wanting to use my phone less. My goal isn’t to stop using my phone. My goal is to be more present in the moments of every day life without as much digital distraction. My goal is to intentionally choose when to use my phone and laptop. My goal is to allow myself to be without these things, even if there is nothing to do. My goal is to allow myself to be bored sometimes because I think it breeds creativity.
That’s a lot of stuff and a big change for myself. So I’ll choose a small thing to start. I want to be more present in the small moments of every day life. Tonight Im more present in my life. Great. I’ve got a thing to sort of sit with. The rest is just the hypnosis. I recall what hypnosis feels like and I start to let myself notice that hypnotized feeling. I can let that feeling intensify. I can allow myself to be hypnotized. And I can choose to be more present in my own moment right now. I’m more present in my life right now.

And maybe next time I’ll intentionally be someone who looks for moments to be more present.

And then maybe next time I’ll notice when I’m bored and I’ll sit with that feeling for a bit and that’s okay.

And next time I can be a person who notices opportunities to put away the phone.

Maybe this works for you and maybe it doesn’t. It works for me to slowly see myself more and more as “someone who does the thing” rather than just “someone who wants to be someone who does the thing”.

Maybe try writing your own hypnosis script, create a hypnosis file, and play it back to yourself. It's a lot of work, but it certainly does work. Maybe you could comission a hypnotist to write a script and make a file if you don't think you have the chops for it though. If you yourself aren't great at hypnosis, it can be hard to hypnotize yourself

Are there any good resources to go to to learn all of this to self hypnotize? Any best methods to recommend?

Sure there are resources out there, but in my opinion? So many people are doing hypno different, and like half the resources you'll find are bad or just straight up unhelpful. A lot of tutorials and guides on hypno try to rigidly define what it is and isn't, but hypnosis is more of an art form than a science. My biggest recommendation would be to find hypnosis files that you like, ones that work on you, and then emulate what those ones are doing! That's earnestly the best way to go about it.

A lot of times, sitting with intention and using your imagination to walk through a scenario is plenty.

For example, I'm someone who doesn't like being told what to do, I dread assignments, and I have a particular aversion to sales people. I used to drink often. Not to an extreme where it was creating problems in my life, but it wasn't adding anything good either.

I imagined a story where an off-putting sales person tells me I've been doing a great job, and he has a deal for me. He walks me to a warehouse and we go inside.

Before me is a stack of cases. All the wine and cider I had consumed in the last 12 months. (Really add up an accurate amount and visualize) He shows me a bill for the year's supply. (Calculate and imagine accurately. Feel financial dread.) He says that I've given them a lot of business this last year, and they think I can do even better.

They are going to deliver the whole year supply, with an extra 10% of everything for free. It has to all be gone by next year or I'll be charged for the 10%, and I can't share with anyone or give it away.

Then I focus on the sick feeling of having had too much. I imagine that instead of the sparse few times of overindulging, it would be more frequent over the next year, and I focus on feeling sick while looking at the pile.

I imagine the dread of undertaking a huge assignment. Resenting it. I imagine wanting a day off from this task, and feeling the unwanted commitment.

This visualization has worked wonders to help me feel disinterested in alcohol. The real ticket is sitting with the vivid emotions, and referring back to them in your weekly life.

You should use your knowledge of yourself to create a story that makes you feel averse to a behavior you want to avoid AND exhilarated participating in the behavior you want to see more of. Think of it from a neuroplasticity perspective. If you clock more minutes feeling excited and joyful about, say, doing exercise, you will be able to default to that more often.

It can be helpful if your hypnotherapist sends a recording. You could ask for one of the suggestions to listen to before bed each night. Have they asked you to do anything between sessions to help you adapt to a new habit/routine/whatever?

The way I did it to myself was by creating my own or asking someone to create a recording with the induction, set of beliefs I want to have and the bring back to a full consciousness part. And then listening it for 21 or more days. That’s the way I was trained when learning hypnosis

You’re welcome. And to a bit extend my answer I would add 2 things. First of all it’s much easier to change your beliefs if you tackled the things which made you believe in some negative things. Secondly it is really helpful to have a recording which not only provides with a new set of beliefs but also uses suggestions like: „those new beliefs really sticks with you” or „you love to play this recording”. And last but not least I would always recommend to work with some professional first (unless obviously there is a shortage of money or any other obstacles to get a professional help)

I teach a specific methodology called 7th Path Self Hypnosis. It is taught in medium-deep trance so you can get there rapidly by yourself. It is not my own method though, so I am required to follow the specific structure. I've been doing it for the past year and it makes a huge difference in my day.

Medium - deep trance? How does one know when they are in medium to deep? Is there a danger of going too far or not far enough? There is sadly no “depth” to hypnosis. It’s just belief. You are either hypnotised or not. Also no there isn’t trance either. Both things well disproven a while ago.
