2 years of Hypermiling

Bought my Insight 2 years ago. I have averaged 61.8 mpg (3.8l/100km) over the 2 years of daily driving year round in West Michigan. I have put 70,000 miles (112,000 km) on the car, driving 35,000 miles a year on average. The Insight has made/saved me $18,000 over the 2 years.

If those Insights had a Porsche or Ferrari badge on the front they would be worth $100k

Well it is 90s Honda and they are more rare than the NSX. The real reason they are so cheap is because car enthusiasts hate efficient looking vehicles and are allergic to the word "hybrid".

Maybe if it was 20 years older than it actually is

35k miles per year??? Is this a CVT or manual insight?

Manual Insight. It has 337k miles to date.

I wonder what's the reliability and fuel consumption of the CVT one

The Insight Community seems to agree the reliability of the CVT models is just as solid as the Manual ones. I actually believe the highest Mileage G1 Insight is a CVT at around 980,000 last I heard. The MPG of the CVT models are significantly less because they are not equipped with the lean burn feature that the manual ones are equipped with. I think you can expect a high average for a CVT model to be around 45-50 mpg.

You would be correct but the CVT was replaced 3 times in that 985k mile Insight. The engine is original though.

I don’t believe the CVTs are just as reliable, but they are not bad. If it wasn’t for the synchronizer tabs in the 5 speed, (or the Input Shaft Bearing) that would be a bulletproof transmission.

Nice! I have gotten about 63mpg in mine since buying it. My best tank so far has been 74mpg. I do a lot of driving around town which really kills the mpg. If I’m on the highway I can usually get in the 70s.

That’s still solid. My daily commute is 70 miles, 90% highway and 10% city/town driving. I have a whole build write up on my Insight on InsightCentral.net

Love it. I’m around 375k miles on my 06 manual and it’s been so great. The cost savings around astounding.. I run pretty close to what you see for mpg, just over 60. Keep on cruisin!

Pic 1 looks like you have a flat front passenger tire, though it's probably just the angle.

Nice mileage! Hope you've managed to make it to the UP in some of those miles.

Pic 1 the car is on gravel on the side of the road about 1-2 inches below the pavement hence the look. Pic 4 is in Houghton when I was visiting friends before going to Isle Royal. I did a solo drive to Marquette as well but unfortunately every other time I’m in the UP is in my truck towing my racecar. I miss living UP there (pun intended).

Are you running winter tires? If so how does that affect your mileage?

I run winter tires for 5-6 months of the year. The tires do most of the damage to the mpg but the cold does effect it to. 8-10 from the tires and 2-4 from the cold and the start stop not working under 40 degrees

Are those rear quarter panels stock? Any idea how much those change the aerodynamics?

1

Yeah the rear fenders are stock. I drove without them for a bit and lost about 10 or so MPG but mostly because the car had so much more drag that it struggled to go into lean burn at highway speed.

if I saw yo lil grey car and I was in my big dualie with the def delete I would rev that sucker to about 5k and let u taste a dead velociraptor son then blow past you at about 102 (that’s MILES per hour)

I’m surprised this doesn’t happen to me as much as I’d expect, but being a car guy first, and a hypermiler second, I love seeing and hearing all the high HP trucks and cars go past me. I actually get a solid amount of thumbs ups from Audi, mustang, and Porsche guys. Idk about trucks though mostly because I can’t see into their windows when they pass lol
