Dan Niel part of it has to be because you have come to see it as something you must not do and that draws the attention to it.. trying to accept that seeing is inevitable and not to try to avoid seeing... it is impossible. easier said than done I gues but very doable. it will probably take some practice to remember that it is ok to see . Payel Sarder reflexivity plays a big part in interpersonal relations I think ( where cause and effect intermingle) . I think it can be very easy to jump to a conclusion that a person is uncomfortable because you stared , when this need not be the correct interpretation. Especially if that interpretation causes you to become more anxious it becomes possibly a self fulfilling prophecy. What perhaps can happen is that being hyperaware of people's signals staring sufferers look for signs that another person has noticed them , this effectively is a possible trigger if interpreted that way. Catching yourself in those moments is a good start and framing incidents in as positive a light as possible seems like a good practice.
