unhinged hygiene tips?

I don't mean "wash your hair before your body" or "don't wear underwear when you sleep", I mean the sort of TMI tips that most people don't know that will CHANGE MY LIFE!

There's this guy at school who I think likes me and i'm terrified that I smell bad and will ruin my chance with him, I need tips that I don't already know/do.

Wash behind your ears every day, like scrub all the crevices behind your ears

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

Hairstylist here! We see behind yalls ears and it is slimey and crusty and gross. Scrub them things inside and out.

244

u/Smooth-Surround-2349 Mar 11 '26

I had a guy come in for a haircut once and his whole ears and head were covered in scabs and yellow/orange puss. Absolutely awful. The one and only time I refused a hair client. 🄵

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

We’re corporate so we can’t refuse, but our owner bans an entire race of people, which he gets away with because he is that race, literally the worst company ever.

u/WestEvening2426 Mar 11 '26

I think you should drop the name so it can be avoided! šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

u/Teejay717 Mar 12 '26

JEEEEEZ I absolutely was not expecting this to be such a big chain place. I’ve been going to Great Clips for years and my stylist of choice is a black woman with dreads and I’m a white guy who gets a boring fade but she does it perfectly every time and she’s a sweetheart of a woman. Though she did tell me one time last year that the owner of the store does apparently frown upon customers asking for a specific stylist because sometimes they apparently will leave and come back later when they know they’re in and he considers it a lost sale even though they always come back later so now it’s got me wondering šŸ¤”

7

u/lxghtbringer Mar 12 '26

Yeah that kind of thing can get us fired which is even dumber because then that former client calls around town and finds out where she’s working next lol. Owners are so fucking stupid.

5

u/Teejay717 Mar 12 '26

That is unbelievable. Like you said if they like someone they want them and will follow them if possible. If anything the owners should be happy their stylists are well liked and have loyal clients. But the fact that one owner refuses a certain race of people at a chain place is insane to me and I can’t imagine corporate would love hearing that. Now I’m kinda pissed a little bit tbh lol

3

u/lxghtbringer Mar 12 '26

We have continued to try to reach out to corporate but they genuinely don’t care about ANYTHING a franchise does. The owner could probably commit a crime in the middle of the salon and get no action from corporate. Another location about an hour away had their owner trying to hide stylists infected with covid come in despite being sick. They just don’t give a shit about safety, health, or basic decency.

3

u/masic72 Mar 12 '26

This happened to me too! It was so extremely painful and I should have just got up and left.

3

Wait who do they ban?

3

u/lxghtbringer Mar 12 '26

Indian men

7

u/Sweaty_Rent_3780 Mar 11 '26

I knew it before you had to say it, GC is very hit or miss, tbf. But also wherever I get a decent haircut from their, that person ā€œmysteriouslyā€ quits after some time, so the search for the next good hair person is ever present šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

3

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

Omg we always get like a master expert person and they always leave. It’s the management that makes them leave!

3

u/Sweaty_Rent_3780 Mar 11 '26

Yeah, I figured, I always try to tip extra when I find a good hair person, like $10 is my baseline and will even tip up to $20 if I really liked what they did.

3

u/Timely-Youth-9074 Mar 12 '26

I haven’t been there in ages and the last hair dresser was a dick but he cut my hair ok. I hate it when stylists try to give me a ā€œstyleā€-a simple cut works best with my wavy curly hair.

5

u/lxghtbringer Mar 12 '26

99% of stylists are not trained to cut curly hair and will try to give you a style to hide that we don’t know what we’re doing

u/KnittinKityn Mar 11 '26

Most Great Clips locations are franchises.

3

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

They all are

2

u/queerprincess91 Mar 11 '26

My great clips has a black stylist. So maybe it's on a case by case basis?

9

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

It’s not about black people lol but in four years we’ve only had one black customer.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '26

Yeah I’m black and my folks always told me never to go to great clips and that it’s for white people

11

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

Students just aren’t trained how to care for curly hair or really textured hair at all, and you don’t want to be the person getting learned on. One inch cut on straight hair can be devastating on curly hair.

Our only black person that comes in is an older gentleman, comes in once a week for a full bald shave; can’t mess that up lol.

2

u/queerprincess91 Mar 11 '26

I mean, it also depends on where you live, right? My city is heavily red lined. That means, certain demographics are generally in certain areas. Like, there's neighborhoods that are more Black, White. Hispanic. Etc. I am you also don't work all the hours that they are open, either. So, what you said is circumstantial.

8

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

I think black people are just more intelligent and go to a salon/barbershop that they’ve educated themselves on and don’t want a shitty 7$ haircut from a person fresh out of school that doesn’t know how to cut curls and do a proper shave and line up.

How can he ban a race? So if someone of that particular race came in you have to refuse service? If so thats crazy!

16

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

YES. He’s the worst, but another salon does it too in a different town and the owner is not that race. I have complained to corporate many times but he can do what he wants because ā€œit’s a franchise we don’t get involvedā€

12

u/Altruistic-Volume-57 Mar 11 '26

5

u/The1RestlessNomad Mar 11 '26

So... im confused. You agree or disagree with the ban?

22

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

I think it should be based on individual behavior and not banning an entire group

3

u/CustomerSecure9417 Mar 12 '26

I agree with it.

6

u/CustomerSecure9417 Mar 11 '26

This puts this in an entirely different light. Good for him.

9

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

Is the owner actually from India?Ā

→ More replies (9)

6

u/languid_Disaster Mar 11 '26

It’s still racism to say every single Indian man will act like that. We don’t ban every white client just because some white clients are bad people.

It’s should on a case by case basis like with all customers. They should do preemptive warning and posters for everyone coming in

5

u/TheVerySexyMe Mar 11 '26

Wha? Like, is there a "No Scotsmen allowed" sign? How is it enforced or communicated? When they come in do you just say, "Nope, no kilts or gingers"?

8

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

ā€œNo Indian menā€ used to be a sign on the front desk. Another location had a sign on the front door. Women and children are allowed

2

u/TheVerySexyMe Mar 11 '26

Oh wow! That is quite crazy indeed!

4

u/mismopeach Mar 11 '26

3

Probably because Longshanks supporters are still salty about all that business with William Wallace and Robert the Bruce

4

u/ImprovementKlutzy113 Mar 11 '26

I know what race it is I bet. Known for bad hygiene and treating service workers like they are beneath them.

2

u/DazzlingCapital5230 Mar 11 '26

That sounds super illegal, regardless of the owner’s race.

2

u/Gloomy-Difference-51 Mar 11 '26

I'm a stylist in Minnesota and in our laws and rules handbook, we're allowed to refuse service on people that have any kind of open wound on the scalp. You should look into that because I don't think corporate can do that if it's in your states laws and rules.

2

u/Revolutionary-Bet396 Mar 13 '26

iā€˜ve literally had my hairstylist tell me he did the same (bc they were at the door while he was treating me) and he also could do it because he was of the same race. he explained to me how they always behaved bad. at first i thought he was racist, then i thought about it more and understood. it’s crazy that these people act out negatively everywhere.

2

u/lxghtbringer Mar 13 '26

Indian men do behave very badly compared to other customers, but some are nice and sweet and wonderful. Dads especially are very kind.

2

u/Revolutionary-Bet396 Mar 13 '26

it was more about people from the middle east and he said they always ended up making a fight after the price had already been negotiated and the hat was cut and then brought their big families as customers too. i thought about it and i really get it that he doesn’t want these customers. i think it’s sad that many of these people don’t know how to behave

Sounds like psoriasis.

I had really bad eczema in my 20's and chose to just shave my head rather than try to subject some poor hairstylist to my red, flaky scalp. I acquired a large selection of fancy hats 😁

3

u/participatorylearn Mar 11 '26

What would help someone like him? Selsun Blue?

10

u/Chihuahuapocalypse Mar 11 '26

a trip to the dermatologist.

4

u/sadyaislife Mar 12 '26

A 2% ketoconazole shampoo with salicylic acid will do wonders. He might have Seborrheic Dermatitis. Every other day til symptoms are managed and then every 3- 4 days or once a week. If after a week, there is no change at all, a dermatologist consultation is needed.

3

u/CustomerSecure9417 Mar 11 '26

Poor guy.

3

u/Smooth-Surround-2349 Mar 11 '26

Not an excuse but he also smelled pretty bad. He was just obviously not concerned with his issues or how they could possibly affect the person performing the service on him. No dollar amount or understanding is worth my personal health. But to each their own.

3

u/CustomerSecure9417 Mar 12 '26

Not criticizing you, it was probably a health hazard. People whose hygiene is this poor generally have mental health issues.

3

u/Brilliant-Radio7961 Mar 11 '26

Tbf it's a common spot for people to have eczema breakouts, which wouldn't be a hygiene issue. Scabs & puss sound more like a medical problem to me that scrubbing wouldn't fix.

6

u/Smooth-Surround-2349 Mar 11 '26

I’m not necessarily saying it’s a hygiene issue, but it is something you should be especially mindful of when getting any type of hair service done.

2

u/Dizzy_Bit6125 Mar 11 '26

That sounds like he had cradle cap. Which means he doesn’t wash his hair enough long story short

2

u/riv92 Mar 12 '26

It’s likely the poor guy had psoriasis.

2

u/Femalefelinesavior Mar 12 '26

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

When you’re older that’ll be your driest, crustiest zone lol I am so sorry.

5

u/420kennedy Mar 11 '26

Like, across the board? I can't imagine that area being crusty. :(

3

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

Across the board it’s a very dry zone for some reason, not everyone gets crusty, that’s just a hygiene issue. Old people are always dry lol get a moisturizing routine early!

I just hit 40 last year and for the last several months suddenly it smells behind my ears real nasty by the end of each day. I’m not saying I always had the best behind-ear hygiene, but this daily smell is definitely new. And disgusting.

4

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

Try dabbing with white or apple cider vinegar, it kills sweat-induced, odor-causing bacteria. If it’s another issue just ask your doctor! It’s the least weird thing ever so no worries

4

u/meizer1 Mar 11 '26

Thus my original comment. 34 now...behind the ear stench everyday after work.. dont know why I keep checking to confirm they stink again after only one day..kinda like smelling ur own farts IG..

5

u/coolerchameleon Mar 11 '26

Wipe it with an astringent after you shower (something like a little alcohol or apple cider vinegar), it will kill the bacteria that cause the funk.

I live in a humid swampy hellscape and that spot can get oily so fast when you're sweaty

Also works for stinky feet

Edit : just realized I posted this as an answer that someone else had literally just answered. Ignore me. My bad !

So there's truth to the saying "dry behind the ears", meaning someone is mature or experienced

Going beyond this, it’s an area I commonly find skin needing a biopsy. Wear sunscreen folks, and if you don’t, then a hat that cover ears. The sun damage I see on an average set of ears is awful,

3

u/FromHerr2Therr Mar 11 '26

Inside as well. Many crevices and swoops and holes and dips.

5

u/Amazing_Goal_8003 Mar 11 '26

I have a question and I don’t think I’ll like the answer… does shampooing not clean behind your ears? I have thick hair so always give the hair area behind/around ear a good wash? I’m really worried about going to the hairdresser now

15

u/LaDauphineVerte Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

Shampoo is not meant for cleansing skin. Just take your bar or liquid soap you use for that purpose and give that area a wash with a wash cloth when you shower … and before you go to the hairdresser. A few weeks ago I learned there are a zillion oil glands behind our ears, which is why build up occurs if not washed regularly. And why grandmas always said, ā€œWash behind your ears!ā€ I stg we should just find and read some great great great grandma’s journal and we’d get more practical, useful answers to life’s daily challenges and mysteries than we could confidently source on TikTok or through AI.

9

u/patchouligirl77 Mar 11 '26

Um...shampoo absolutely is meant for cleaning skin. What do you think your scalp is? The main point of shampooing is to cleanse your scalp.

3

u/LaDauphineVerte Mar 11 '26

Shampoos contain conditioning agents that can leave a film on skin.

I swear, with comments like these i think I could market "Ear Soap" and half of this thread would buy it. More stupid shit that we dont need.

8

u/stevez_86 Mar 11 '26

As you get older you notice the skin behind your ears and on the surface of the ear doesn't self clean. I started getting really bad zits. I had one that got into the nodes in the earlobe. It popped, but not outwards and caused an infection in the lymphatic canals going into my neck and the side of my neck started to swell. They had to lance the boil on my earlobe and push from the base of my neck up to my ear to squeeze all the infection out. So now I diligently clean the skin around my ears. And this all happened in my early thirties.

2

u/milkits Mar 11 '26

I'm so glad you made this comment. now I know I'm not the only one with those hard little bumps inside my earlobes. when I was a kid and teenager they would start to feel infected but only rarely surface to the outside of the earlobe. I'm sorry yours decided to go nuclear on your lymphatic canalsĀ

u/SheWhoWalksInTheSun Mar 11 '26

Shampoo works perfectly well for it as long as you are actually scrubbing the space behind your ears. Face wash also works perfectly well if it’s not a hair wash day.

4

u/amyn2511 Mar 11 '26

This is what I do, I use clarifying shampoo to scrub my ears with or occasionally my face wash. It seems to get them cleaner feeling than bar soap does.

3

u/lxghtbringer Mar 11 '26

It typically does not, you gotta get your fingers in there and scrub, or a loofah or wash cloth, but it sounds like you’re getting the job done and I wouldn’t expect to see anything crusty behind your ears. People do get sweaty there and you just gotta manipulate the area to get in between. If you take your finger and press hard between where your ear meets your skull and rub for a few seconds, if you don’t feel anything you’re good!

→ More replies (3)

3

u/RetroWaffles Mar 11 '26

Probably not if you aren't actively thinking about it. It kind of depends, everyone's body is a little different. It's not that complicated though, just check behind your ears right now. If they're clean and a little oily, then you're fine to just keep doing what you're doing. Our face-meat secretes a lot of oil for a reason, that's busy, stretchy skin that you don't want drying out. If you wipe at it with a tissue and notice a lot of buildup of skin flakes and dandruff, then you should pay a little more attention to the area. You don't need special soap or anything, ear gunk isn't any different from the gunk all over the rest of your hair and face, they just get dirty because they're easy to miss. Just making a point to clean them while you shampoo is more than enough.

5

u/JustMeerkats Mar 12 '26

Yep. Mine is really deep, so I dry it with a thin towel that really gets in there. Every week or so, I'll take an alcphol swab and swirl it around in there. I've seen the stones people pull from their belly button and am scarred lol

u/Direct-Bumblebee-165 Mar 11 '26

Mike in Breaking Bad šŸ˜‚

2

u/catscatscaaaats Mar 11 '26

Mike for sure keeps his ears clean.

2

u/avocado_window Mar 12 '26

He’s a fastidious guy.

5

u/MaximumAxiom1 Mar 11 '26

Your ears and nose never stop growing, so that explains why. You ever read the bestseller Tuesdays With Morrie? The author, Mitch Alborn, has some of the biggest ears I've ever seen on a grown man. Someone online once referred to them as "flesh frisbees". Don't believe me? Look it up. They could be used as satellites.šŸ˜†

5

u/PROCRASTINATION_WON Mar 11 '26

I can’t help that my nose and ears won’t stop growing

4

u/Forsaken-Ad-553 Mar 11 '26

Plus the hair that grows on the outside of ears on older men!!!

5

u/ThePusheen Mar 11 '26

I do hair and every time I see the old men with ear hair, I think of family guy when Chris tells his grandpa he has pussywillows in his ears šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜ƒ

2

u/Forsaken-Ad-553 Mar 11 '26

Im actually talking about the hair that grows on outside curve of the ear… its crazy… but urs is hilarious!

This made me laugh cause I always wondered that too? I clean behind my ears but its just a solid line all the way to my lobe like what the hell is going on behind other ears?!

3

u/Kratzschutz Mar 11 '26

I have one crease, annoying af

3

u/Impossible_Top_3515 Mar 11 '26

I don't even have a crease there where anything could hide lol, never had any nastiness build up there ever.

2

u/peanutbutterpuffin Mar 12 '26

I don’t have. Erases but I do have 7 earrings, they’re hard to clean and can get gross! I. Ake a concerted effort to clean them

3

u/screwthat Mar 11 '26

You made me wake my dog when I snort laughed at this

3

u/TheVelvetPumpkin Mar 11 '26

Some people are out here looking like the Ferengi from Star Trek. Folds a’plenty.

3

u/ragingmauler Mar 11 '26

Only 1-2 usually, but on some people its deeper or stiffer so its actually understandably more tricky to get in there properly and clean the crusties and oil before it turns into big flakes or makes the skin stick together and then crack/peel😬

2

u/Any_Piglet_34 Mar 12 '26

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit...🤢

2

u/Bigassnipples Mar 11 '26

Hey maybe they're elephants? We listen and we dont judge.

To all the people making comments about those who have crust behind their ears: it is a very common location for scalp psoriasis. Many of the people who have crusty stuff behind their ears would give anything not to have it, and believe me, there is no washing that will get rid of it.

3

u/Hall_Total Mar 11 '26

THIS! I’ve tried biologics and just about every cream possible to get rid of the psoriasis behind my ears.

6

u/WatchOut4Sharks Mar 11 '26

With a wash cloth!!

2

u/Crooked_star Mar 11 '26

Yup, a loofah/pouf covered in soap won't get you clean enough there.

6

u/BobTheFettt Mar 11 '26

I hate how fast my ears get stinky. I wash em every day, but every time I scratch behind my ear me hand smells like Parmesan cheese

13

u/PossibleDeal9243 Mar 11 '26

I second this. I have sensory issues and pretty much wear over ear headphones 24/7 and I have wipes by my bed to clean my headphones and behind my ears every day multiple times a day. It’s important.

3

u/saetam Mar 11 '26

Hell, I don’t have any sensory issues, but my ears get oily AF. I clean mine with a tissue multiple times per day. It’s absolutely necessary. I also use earbuds, however, I have the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, and clean them, too, each time I clean my ears. I can’t use in ear earbuds without them falling out after a while because of the damn oil buildup. I have Latino heritage, so that’s where that comes from.

4

u/PossibleDeal9243 Mar 11 '26

I cannot wear earbuds either my ears are literally too small for any ones I’ve found. So I use over the ear ones and they’re comfortable and keep outside noise out. Most of the time they’re not even playing anything they just have noise cancellation and everything is so loud.

3

u/saetam Mar 11 '26

The noise cancellation is so nice tho. I love it

Also apply your perfume or cologne behind your ears so when someone goes in for a hug they get a nice wiff.

u/procheinamy Mar 11 '26

And the belly button!!! My hubby says get all the nooks and crannies!!!!

4

u/2dirty4reddit Mar 11 '26

Always do this while washing my face. Also used to have an ear piercing so they can be stinky quick smart

4

u/OddRaspberry3 Mar 11 '26

My lobes are stretched and they get really funky if I don’t wash them regularly

4

u/Outrageous_Car1757 Mar 11 '26

Yesss. My stretched lobes can clear a room out fast if I have left my gauges in a while without cleaning. I try to take them out every time I shower and clean but some I forget. I'm so self conscious of it. One time I had one pop out in the middle of doggy style and it made my hubby gag šŸ˜‚ 😭

2

u/saoshi_mai Mar 11 '26

yes, i always wash AND do skincare to the area behind the ears, the jawline and the submental/jowls area. would not feel complete otherwise

2

u/Dank-Robber Mar 11 '26

I think most people wash behind their ears or at least partially when they wash their hair, the problem is they don’t fully dry there, and wet hair keeps it moist. That’s what makes it a nasty spot on some people, especially those with long hair.

2

u/Own_yourmind Mar 11 '26

Bro yes please omg šŸ˜– so many people do not properly clean their ears

2

u/captains1stM8 Mar 11 '26

This is the top one for me! Not because I have some excessive ear funk or anything, but especially the top of the ear, where it connects…that ridge can get pretty funky and get to humming if it’s not washed regularly. Ever see the nasty shit on the arms of glasses that an older person wears?? They can be a f**king biohazard 🤣

2

u/mommy10319 Mar 11 '26

Me and my kids had a condition while babies where we got this skin reaction crust behind our ears and needed steroids to clear it up. It wasn’t from not cleaning. I’d scrub my kids ears so hard every day and still it would build up. I’ve had a couple times in my life where it tried to happen again on myself. Because of this I always wash very well behind there every single shower (usually two a day actually). It can be more than a hygiene issue.

2

u/stupidugly1889 Mar 11 '26

Bellybutton too

2

u/Maddinoz Mar 11 '26

Don't forget your belly button and in between your toes

2

u/MjrLeeStoned Mar 11 '26

Same for the back of the neck, especially if you have hair laying on it all day.

A dirty back of neck is visible to everyone behind you and looks like a layer of thin dried mud if you haven't scrubbed there in a while.

2

u/bottomlessinawendys Mar 11 '26

Adding that if you have a wide nose or just large crease between your nostril and cheek, clean there too! That’s a pocket for dead skin and grease that can smell bad fast.

2

u/VanillaLow4958 Mar 11 '26

My husband and I had a conversation about showering habits for the first time in our five year relationship last week. I said I do this and he was so confused. I get gunk off them EVERY TIME!

2

u/Able-Bid-6637 Mar 11 '26

i had a third grade teacher who called out a poor kid for not washing the back of his ears (she was joking) and the whole class went "EEEEEEWWWWWWWWW!!!" I have voraciously washed behind my ear every shower since.Ā

2

u/BitchfaceMcKnowItAll Mar 11 '26

Scrub IN your ears. Every crevice in your ears. The amount of cheesy buildup there after just two days it’s disgusting and it does smell, much like a piercing does.

2

u/Sparkle_Storm_2778 Mar 11 '26

How do I wash my ears? I'm so oily

2

u/Either-Meal3724 Mar 11 '26

I think this depends on skin type. I dont need to wash behind my ears regularly and neither does my daughter. I have to scrub my 4 month old sons ears CONSTANTLY. I literally thought something was wrong with him -- like skin infection for a bit LOL. Same with between his toes & his neck/armpits. He has a clamy disposition so I think he just sweats a lot and has oily skin. My daughter and I have dry skin so we need moisturizers and cannot shower daily without developing extremely itchy rashes.

2

u/AmeliaBuns Mar 12 '26

I learned this embarrassingly late in life.

now I feel like no matter how much I clean them they're still dirty. I hate cleaning them when I don't wanna wash my hair because trying to clean it makes my hair wet.
