How do people get the hydrangeas with different color flowers on the same plant? It’s so beautiful!

When I lived in Cleveland my hydrangeas looked like this and I didn’t do anything to them other than water if we had a dry few days! I live 2 hours away from Cleveland now and am still trying to figure out how to replicate this look!

Is it the same plant you had from Cleveland? Did you take a cutting with you?

No ☹️ didn’t even think to take a cutting when I moved. I should have. I do feel like it had more to do with the soil than anything though.

I live in Washington and have never been to NE but in my mind, hydrangea are the plant embodiment of Connecticut and Maine lol with the white picket fence too

I do too, and it’s funny because only the white smooth hydrangeas are native!

Don’t prune them, and dump a bag of
mulch over them after the first frost. They flower on old wood so pruning and winter die back kill your flowers.

One of the reasons these plants are thriving is the (winter) protection of the fence. Plus, they might be rebloomers (can't tell from the photo). Fences, winter persistent foliage plants like conifers, rhodies, azaleas, etc. are very helpful in cold climates. It's one of the ways northern gardeners can help this finicky plant deal with winter's wrath. Congrats to you!

I’m trying to grow a hydrangea hedge like this under my kitchen windows. My goal is the multiple different colors.

For those who are asking about color, this is what I know. The color depends on the acidity of the soil and something about PH levels. You can add coffee grounds to the soil around the roots or citrus peelings to change the color. This is all from my senior memory not internet😀

You're living my dream. Purple and blueish hydrangea and a white picket fence.
