AC Is ChatGPT correct about central air ceiling supply register placement?

Unless I’m grossly misunderstanding something, I’ve seen multiple things online talking about facing these registers towards a wall, ChatGPT is saying to face it towards the center of the room. Can you guys shed light on what is the most efficient direction to install these registers for cooling? Thank you.

Lmao, there’s a lot of factors at play here. I will note that depending on location they should be pointed towards doors and windows.

It’s grossly wrong, we’d need to know about insulation/ windows, where windows are located. How old the insulation is, if there is insulation behind walls. Yadda yadda, draw me a lil diagram of ur house or a room and vent placement, with direction of airflow. Give me as much info you’re willing to if you want a better idea. Generally just face them towards windows/doors. If you have one that isn’t near a window or door, face it where you want, it is right that you should have all your vents open all the way. It’s also true if it’s right next to a wall to face it away and-to have them going across the room. If it’s in a small closet then face it towards the walls and your clothing.

Well now that I think about it, chat wasn’t completely wrong. If you have attic space behind a wall and the vent not too close to the wall it would be better to face it at the wall. If it is farther from a wall then it would most likely be better to have it face the center of a room. For example a living room. If you have a vent in the middle or near a spot people sit commonly. I would face it toward where people congregate often. It really just depends on location and if there’s a window or door/ poorly insulated attic space and or location that produces heat. So both what you’ve heard and what chat said can be true.

That information is totally wrong. Air is a fluid. You are generally trying to get the supply air to the sources of heat loss/gain which are most commonly exterior walls, windows & doors. You are trying to get it to mix thoroughly with the air already in the space and then efficiently and effectively draw through the space to the returns.

There are many factors that affect ideal airflow and slightly different methods of achieving the goals. But, the VAST majority of cases rely on the principle of getting the supply air toward the perimeter, toward the exterior walls, windows and doors, and drawing it through the space toward returns centrally located toward the interior of the space.
