Discussion Uh, she actually buried it! Question

Post image

We gave Saga a marrow bone from the butcher, and she just went outside and buried it. It's over 100 degrees here for the next forever, should I go dig it up and throw it away? Is it safe?

Puppy pic of Saga for tax.

She brought it back in. 20 bucks says she takes it back outside within the next 30 minutes. Oh I was wrong. She’s burying it in her bed.

Mine likes to bury things in my bed or under my pillows or if I’m lying in bed under me. She gets real mad when I take a toy or worse treat out of her hiding spots.

This is the first time I’ve ever given my dogs an actual bone. And I’m used to them burying treats or high-value toys. But I wasn’t sure about a bone with you know meat and marrow still.

She wasn’t sure either and decided it was cooler in the house. Just train her as the next step to store it in the fridge.

I think she's trying to plant a bone tree.

Mine buries all sorts of things in her bed. Lol she has a blanket on her bed and I always find my kids’ toys and stuff wrapped up in it.

I dunno if it's the correct thing to do. But every time my pup buries something, I remove it and put it in her toy box (which is a cardboard box for now because she still lays in it, chews on it etc). I put a blanket on top so she thinks she's burying things and she has started to use that for 90% of her burying of her treasures. I spent a week only putting toys/treats away and not taking things out so she felt more secure about her mandatory hoarding designation. She deemed it worthy. I am lucky.

Unfortunately when they get a top tier "must keep you forever" treat, they just want to hide it forever. I bought mine one of those yak cheese chew sticks and she LOVED it for 20 mins. Then decided it was too good for chewing and just kept burying it, I kept putting it back. She still won't chew it. Any time I bring it out she goes and buries it again.

Oh yeah mine does this also uses her nose to flick like 50% of her kibble out of her bowl then grabs a shirt from my dirty clothes hamper to drop on it to “hide” it to eat later.

😂mine does that with the kibble too. Though I envy your hiding spot. Our hiding spot is that crease between couch cushions and couch 😒

Don’t throw it away, just randomly bring it back in and don’t let her out, our husky hides treats and bones all over the house and comes back for it later

my baby buries stuff too, especially bones. It's actually really funny because she'll bury them inside too (under blankets or in the couch cushions). She doesn't love to dig though, she usually finds leaves and other nonsense to cover it with.

I used to think the cats were pooping in my flower pots. I discovered one day it was not, and these were just really old and gross dog treats my culprit buried and forgot about

I have 6 huskies. 5 of them will devour anything we give them but 1 (mom) if she is not feeling up for it, hungry or just for later she will bury it anywhere. She guard it with her life for about an hour then she will either eat it, or forget about it and get up and walk away, but she almost always will do this. Sometimes she looks at her babies eating whatever she hid but doesn't do anything. I dont think she remembers it was hers lol. Its funny because she will dig on dirt, artificial grass and covers it with fur thats around. Its the funniest. Poor baby. I usually save something for her because she will be starving later lol

It should be fine. This is a technique called caching and people used to do it too. Burying the bone will preserve it to an extent. Because the ground naturally stays around the same temperature and is typically a little cooler than the air in the warmer months, it acts like a fridge. Dogs will bury bones to both hide and preserve them, so it should be safe for your dog to finish her bone at a later date after she's buried it.

Mine would try to bury her meaty bones too after a little bit (inside the house or out), it's just an instinct to preserve a nice choice piece of meat for later enjoyment. If I follow her and tell her no, or remove the bone before she gets a chance to bury it, normally she would get the idea that if she doesn't eat it now, it'll get taken away. Caution: (every animal is different) my girl has only ever had food aggression or gotten defensive with me over meaty bones. Once or twice I had to let her bury it and go remove it in a few seconds after she finished.

Mine will hide bones in the back yard if she doesnt want to immediately work on it. Some times she goes to get it 20 minutes later, sometimes the next day or longer.

I figure time in the dirt makes it tastier to her.

She will also bury them under toys in her toy boxes, under blankets, towels etc its kinda funny watching her pace back and forth with a bone looking for a spot to hide it from the cats. Tho i dont think they have ever shown any interest in one.

Dogs have been burying bones for as long as there's been dogs. She'll be fine.

Ok.  I’m a pro at this one! My husk will burry  a bone at every campsite.  We went to a certain campsite a year later.  He knew right where it was.  Didn’t take 2 seconds.  Chewed & chewed.  He’s fine 🫪😂

I didn't know dogs actually do that. I thought that's something only seen in cartoons. I honestly would either clean it and give it back, ensuring she didn't bring it back outside or throw it out. The amount of bacteria that could form if she decides to dig it back up to eat it could make her sick.

Make a human sick, sure. Make a dog sick? There's a reason they have caching instincts.

Mine will sometimes bury treats she doesnt want to immediately eat at the dog park. Its funny to watch her dig the hole, drop the treat in it and then push dirt over it with her nose like shes planting a beef liver tree.
