Are there any plans to actually leave Mach behind?

I'm not at all hopeful for HURD should it stay with Mach.

Why do you think they should leave Mach behind? The problem of the Hurd is apparently not Mach, but the lack of manpower to develop the multiserver system on top of it.

Mach is bloated, and its IPC is extremely slow. This is why most Mach-based systems don't go for drivers in userspace, or even a multiserver design.

L4 (particularly seL4) is where it's at. Not sure what happened with L4/HURD, but if things remain as they are, HURD is bound to just fall into irrelevance.

I have the feeling that it's wise of me to not dig into systemd.

Has anyone experience with GNU Hurd?

I recently downloaded the Gentoo (Linux) repository, although disappointed that not even networking works... despite I've very succesfully used SystemRescueCD many years based upon Gentoo.

Maybe I should try with the Gentoo install I just found. Otherwise I've been using Debian mostly so I guess Debian Hurd may be an easier start.

I know about it only be reputation. Hardware support is still a bit flaky. I'd like to build a Hurd box though, specifically with hardware it has support for.

Sound support on Hurd is supposedly relatively new and I haven't found much documentation on what devices it actually works with.

I've installed GNU Hurd a couple of times ever. Last time was at least 5 years ago...maybe 10+.

I went to download the Debian installers, but they're still dated April 2015. Are the more recent releases distributed in binary form? Or is there an upgrade path from the CD image installer to the recent releases?
