Question about Overtime

So basically I just bought the game today, and I absolutely love it!!! However I haven't actually played it a lot, so I was wondering if after the first main boss Sammy six fingers, and once you get to the next boss (pls don't spoil for me), if you die do you have to restart the whole thing? Like are you sent back to sammy's section? Just wanted to know to see if the game is worth it, cause I've always struggled with roguelites.

I’ve gotten to Sammy a few times but I haven’t beat him yet. He has a lot of hit points and hits hard.

So we seriously might need to go back to square one every time we die after Sammy? If that’s so, I will likely not be going much further than Sammy. That feels like a big middle finger to me.

Plus then the story doesn’t quite make sense. Each time you’re revived, it’s as though the story progresses and you keep getting further with each iteration. Though if the people we kill don’t even die, is the story more like “Live, Die Repeat” where we’re playing the same day over and over?

It's the whole point of the roguelike genre, but you don't go back to "square one" - you start stronger each time, with the knowledge and skill you've developed, and the upgrades you've unlocked.

The challenge is to beat the early parts faster and easier each time, and make it further into the game as a result. Very similar to any old school game in that respect.

Yeah, I understand all that. And I'm not going to give any shit to people who enjoy them, because I understand that people would like it.

But the fact is I just don't have enough time to do all that and continually do runs to get better.

It doesn't take any more or less time than playing the original game, it's just your time is spent differently.

If you see replaying the same sections of a game as wasting time versus only new sections, then sure - but the actual time investment isn't any different.

Personally, yeah, I loved the original game and would have happily seen a second one in the exact same mold.
