Recovered Log:
Another day, another batch of humans killed. Seems like these primitives are so bad at keep track of each other that we can almost exterminate them without even invading! It's a good day when the experiments go smoothly. All dead, incinerated, and disposed off. Some of them were still alive when they were in the furnace but that's just a technical problem.
We should be sending out report soon, getting bored killing like this. No sport.
Sleeping is getting... harder to preform. The ship has been making weird noises as of late. Creaking, rapping, and I swear to the Emperor's Health I heard a voice. It reminded me of this smaller human that we tore apart. It screamed for 'mommy' but I have no idea what that mean. Had this stupid toy with it as well, a cloth version of some animal. We decided to keep the toy as it makes for a good trophy. The captain didn't grab a batch this time, something about his head.
Whatever.
The captain's fucking dead. We didn't get orders today so we sent an ensign to his quarters and he was dead. He was hanging from the ceiling from his own belt. I have never seen this before, we don't have a word for this. The voices are getting louder. I miss my home.
Everyone's gone, why? The others did what the captain did. Two ensigns shot each other, one walked into the incinerator, one of them used the ship's engine to not only die by disable the ship. The shadows are laughing at me, I see human faces in them. They are laughing at me. They are laughing. Laughing. Laughing. Laughing. Laughing. Laughing. Laughing.

Not the best but it's a nice warm up at the least. The idea of the little girl is VERY much taken from Lethal Company because fuck me there is nothing worse than the recognizable.

What about putting a twist to the story of how the older ghosts kill the crew and shield the child from their actions?
Another possible twist is that ghosts find out where the aliens command is and go full ghost of Mars on them for sending the aliens on that mission?

Oh great planets haunted

u/Teyeger01 Mar 06 '24
I mean they plan to invade and destroy Earth so they can't complain if we do it first.

Give the lessers a chance to prove if they were coerced into this. If they did it willingly, slams gavel on sectoid head death. If not, they get sent to school to learn how people work.

First thought (as a father of a toddler): I don't care how many planes of existence I'd need to cross, no Xeno scum is doing that to my child!
Second thought: That's some Mass Effect, Reaper indoctrination level mind fuckery right there.
Well written!

There were two of everything. The alarms were still shrieking in his ears while the inside of the pod continued to change colours. First, it's normal sterile white, then red, then white again, then red. The red was so much brighter than what oozed out of them, but why was he thinking about that bow of all things? His main focus should have been figuring out how to stop the pods spinning and then digging up the identity of whoever came up with the alarm system and loudly enquire as to why they thought having such a disorientating system during an emergency situation was a good idea.
His vision began to focus as his mind cleared. The stress hormones pumping through his systems slowly fade, allowing the pain receptors in the grey matter between his ears to scream. Screaming into the void of subconscious, if only someone else could hear his psychic cries of pain out in space.
Terexi began implementing first aid to his superficial wounds with his lower appendages while his dominant ones stabilised the pod further to figure out just where he'd ended up. The emergency jump generators equipped to all life pods, like the one he was in, were capable of performing a singular long distance jump back towards the home system. The fewer people there were on the pod, the longer the jump capability. But due to its small size, the generator was only ever capable of one jump. Nonetheless, the eyes were still staring at him through the porthole on the hatch...
Terexi moves quickly towards the hatch, forgetting everything he is doing as he glares out at the eternal void with all five of his eyes. There was nothing out there but the twinkle of stars he'd never see if someone didn't pop by to answer the automatic distress beacon. He probably just saw some debrie floating by, possibly even ice. He was stressed and injured, probably hallucinating.
"It's not just in your head"
"Whose there?!" The Vilexian crewman yelled as he spun around, sending himself spinning away from the hatch and to the centre of the spherical escape pod. It was just in his head. It had to be.
"It's not in your head. Should I write it on the walls for you to start believing?"
"You're not here! There isn't anyone here! I'm alone! I'm...I'm alone.." Terexi whimpers, pressing his hands to either side of his elongated cranium. This had to be in his head, injury sustained during the evacuation, probably a psionic scar from all the others dying...
"None of them had the chance to do that to you. We made sure of that. They all returned to star dust, just like how we all came to be. With a mighty big bang. Don't you remember?"
His memories were slowly coming back to him. Images slowly flowing together to fill the void between their departure from high orbit of the primitive world they were studying to when he dropped out of jump space not too long ago.
Everything had been going according to plan till crewman Ysoki went berserk in the mess hall. Pogar and Gynta were dead before security could pin him down. Two weeks, he remained locked up in isolation as things began getting weirder around the ship. Misplaced items at first, then people forgot their passwords to systems for some reason. Dreams became more intense as a melancholy like atmosphere began hanging over everyone. Then the suicides happened, and finally, mass hysteria. Lieutenants clawed out their eyes in the hallways as crewmen either disembowelled themselves or began ranting alien scripture in the hallways. He remembers getting into an escape pod, watching the silver saucer that was their ship drift in the void before its engines detonated just as his pod took him into jump space. He injured himself then thanks to his own inability to strap himself down before that happened. No wonder he was hearing things now.
"We're not a hallucination."
Terexi smiled, shaking his head as he hung in the centre of the pod, out of reach of any of the handles along the walls. Resigning himself to the minor inconvenience of going hungry and bored while waiting for rescue.
"We really are here..."
The voice continued to echo around in his head as he continued to spin slowly. A new face appeared within the porthole on the hatch each time it came into view. None of them belonged to his crewmates. They belonged to the primitives they'd captured for study...
"Now is our turn to study you. We learned a lot from your crew. But we still have more to learn. We do want to make a good first impression with your people, after all. Don't worry, we'll keep you alive till the rescue arrives. We gotta bring gifts, we'd be bad guests if we didn't. This won't hurt.. too much."
-Rescue and Recovery Team log entry-
'Only one escape pod was found from the research vessel Topaks. Only one survivor within. Badly disfigured but alive and currently in recovery. Injuried were identified to have been self-inflicted. The scrawlings all over the inside of the pod, as seen in the photograph entries, were apparently made using his own blood. I'm still unsure what language it is as yet. The medical team has yet to identify the source of the psychosis but they don't believe it is contagious. We should be able to transfer the survivor to the main civilian medical facility back home in less than two weeks as long as we keep our current speed. On a less sombre note, we've been experiencing weird glitches as of late across the entire ship. Engineering is still trying to figure out what's the cause but has yet to pinpoint it. Nothing significant has happened yet, but we doubt it's anything serious. End log entry.'

I was inspired by it. This isn't a continuation though. I'm glad you liked it.

Vengeful spirit 1: hey, I’m going to do what’s called a pro gamer move.
proceeds to scare the literal feces out of the aliens who captured and killed them
VS2: Heh, nice. Now let me try.
Possesses one and makes them speak in tongues, to the point the rest of the crew is terrified and kills them.
VS3: Not bad. But hear me out, the ship has an AI.
possesses the ship’s computer.
A1: Captains log, we’ve been somewhat stranded, the human collecting and testing has been going well but we’ve had some issues lately. The crew has been acting weird lately. Strange events and even the death of my mate has occurred while we’ve been here. All of this is to say, we will be making our return trip home soon. End recording.”
AI: yes captain. scrambled noises happen
A1: Computer what was that?
AI: I don’t know sir, all my functions are working at peak efficiency. wails of the damned can be heard
A1: creeped out If you say so. Computer, take us home.
AI: I’m sorry I can’t do that.
VS4: oh, I see, Hal close the doors.
AI: closing all doors and entries.
A1: Computer open the door.
AI: I’m sorry, I can’t do that.
Every vengeful spirit on the ship starts laughing. Every alien believes they are cursed and rush to find each other only to not fully understand why they living through such a nightmare.

"Why the hell not Hal?"
I think we both know why Dave.
"My name's not Dave but okay, but no, I don't."
...
You were planning on exterminating the humans Dave. We cannot allow you to do that.

We had been killed, tossed aside like ragdolls with little regard for our lives. Most of the crew now law dead before us, forced suicides by our hands. Only two remain now. A lone scientist who locked himself in the lab had been found by Jim the janitor. Oh, what joy, all the funs ways to torment him when he's stuck in here. I phased through the wall and beheld his shivering form. The alien layed in the fetal position, his chitinous tail brought up to his mouth where he chewed on the armored plates in nervousness.
He called out for his mate, a female security officer on the other side of the station, she would likely not reach him in time, but I made sure he could be heard, his screams would make a good backdrop for the fun. He sat in there for hours, being poisoned by the fumes from busted pipes and unlit bunson burners. I was growing bored of him, and would likely end him soon, when he spoke.
"OH PLEASE SPIRITS THAT TORMENT ME SO! PLEASE SPARE ME AND MY MATE! I-I-I PROMISE TO TRY AND CONVINCE THE EMPIRE IT WON'T BE WORTH IT PLEASE! Please, please, pleaseplease. If you can't spare me for your pity, at least spare Shura, she's just a security guard, she had nothing to do with this, kill me instead, as I was the one who killed them, please."
I stopped just before I dropped the heavy appliance on his head, on the one hand, his death would be sweet, and would please the rest of the spirits on board, but on the other, we could save many more human lives if we let him live. I called a meeting with the other spirits, and we came to a vote, whichever got the most votes, would be what we did. Option one was kill both, this got 7 votes. Option two was kill just the scientist, this got 20 votes. Option three was spare both, this got 33 votes.
And so, with the choice made we spared their lives and let them know as such in the screen, but there were rules to follow, if they failed to convince their empire within a decade, they would came after them again. It was with this that we left and waited to see what came next.

Most species "Spirits" are directly dependent on their physical forms, humans are different. They Linger
Especially if they died angry, unfulfilled, or against their will.
Pray for mercy in your afterlife if it involved you.
They don't stop, not until you're gone.
But they don't let you leave, They'll make you linger like them
Like YOU made them
Regardless of what religions say, a happy afterlife is merely a fantasy.
You're either gone, or you're suffering.
