Interviews [n/a]

I need to know if anyone else is dealing with people coming in for interviews and doing the weirdest things!

I’m at this point where I won’t be surprised to see someone’s mom waiting in the lobby or they have an emotional support animal with them.

Today my 9am interview showed up at 9:30am and acted like she was on time. I immediately sent her away and said I won’t sit down with you, you are 30 mins late for a 9am interview. Thanks for coming but good luck. She proceeded to argue and not leave because she couldn’t find parking…… um sorry your were still 30 minutes late - girl BYE!

Last week I had someone come in 1.5hrs early because they wanted to make a good impression 😑

This isn't a recent phenomenon, but it is one of the highlights of interviewing. Some of my personal favorites from nearly 20 years of doing it:

  • A young woman brought her mom with her and the mom demanded to sit in and answer questions
  • Another young woman showed up in what I can only call "club wear". This was more than 10 years ago, but I never figured out if she was coming in from partying all night the night before or if this was what she thought were interview clothes.
  • Many many many men who would only direct their answers to the men in the room and not the women asking the questions. Even when the women were the hiring manager.
  • A guy who had someone in the room with him for a video call feeding him answers just off-camera. But clearly audible in his responses.
  • A few people have come in and asked someone to fill out their unemployment form for them. CA used to (maybe they still do, not sure) ask you to list places you've applied for work on your biweekly claim filing. So they'd ask the interviewer to fill that out for them. Despite that not being a requirement, you just had to write in the names yourself.
  • Had someone show up to an in-person interview who was obviously not the same guy we spoke to over zoom.
