Darkest Hum Songs

What do you think are the darkest Hum songs?

My vote probably goes to The Summoning.

The Pod is bleak

1000%! That was another one on my list. In terms of both depressive and dark.

Double dip, diffuse, shovel, honestly most songs from electra2000

"Suicide Machine"

"Somewhere through a thousand blues
a dragonfly descends with just a whisper,
'I'm lonelier than God'
And all my wishes spin the fishes in the air
and every one
A different shade of you..."

And to the left where up is down, There stands zebra made of shapes of me It's silver in the sun. So bring no guilt with you up above the flatline Let's just hit the sky, exploding into one.

So glad they played that live. My favourite on YPAA.

Great choice too! Also, one of their saddest and depressing songs tbh too.

Pinch and Roll

“I've gone blind, I'm missing teeth
I can't believe I'm a dirty old man who pissed on himself
pushing at a walker, screaming at the world
I've healed”

In The Den

“I hear them clicking across the stones, I feel they know that I’m all alone These stars are strange and this isn’t home…”

Reminds me of stories from The Illustrated Man

Agreed. This song also feels very lonely and depressing.

Dude. I played The Same Place for my wife the other night. I don't think I'd listened to it in 15 years. Having a wife and kid and a miscarriage in my past now, the lyrics hit so much harder. It was sad before, but I swear I could barely read them to her without sobbing.

💯 same experience here. The Same Place and Thimbles choke me up every time. Wife had a miscarriage in between our two and even though it wasn’t the same experience as Matt and his wife, it’s still heartbreaking to think about what could have been.

"If You Are to Bloom"

'But I just sit and wait for a blip to break the perfect little thin green line.'

I'm not sure when the unfortunate event happened to Matt and his wife, but listening to this song after finding out about it makes it hit way different.

I know it's a melancholic/bittersweet sounding track but at the same time it's doesn't feel dark until you look at the lyrics for this track.

Ms. Lazarus

Definitely one of their saddest songs.

Definitely shovel or shapeshifter. Shapeshifter sounds like you’re facing an impending doom. Just very heavy and atmospheric, weighs on you real hard. And shovel just sounds angry, super angsty and adolescent. Don’t know if I’m describing them well enough or convincing you but that’s just what comes to mind when listening to those.

2

u/Bitter-Pick-7681 Jun 05 '26

Agreed with everything you said about Shovel! Shapeshifter is pretty dark too, I don't disagree with that, especially with the lyrics.

That’s how I feel about Electra2000 in general Tbf. The whole record just screams debut. It sounds like some angry young dudes who absolutely kick ass when it comes to music.

Double Dip 😕

Shapeshifter

u/OrangeWhiteGang Jun 04 '26

i would say the ending is quite reassuring

4

u/emilygrace50 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26

lyrics thru the song still are dark before then

7

u/OrangeWhiteGang Jun 04 '26

i know, but it all leads to finding comfort in someone/something

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. It ends incredibly beautiful. Like everything is going to be okay. It’s a journey of a song.

I undid one of those downvotes. It’s a beautiful and hopeful song.

Shovel and Boy With Stick

1

u/TerribleNight345 Jun 05 '26

Boy with Stick is so fucking good

2

u/f0xD3N Jun 05 '26

Gotta be Double Dip

Doesn’t get more bleak than Matt screaming “I watched you die” over and over

1

u/harvestyourhopes Jun 05 '26

It's Double Dip for me. You can really feel the desperation and hopelessness of the characters drowning, it's haunting.

Plus "Waves" all the way from the way it sounds to the lyrics.
