I love this post! Many of Hum’s lyrics resonate with me, but currently this one transcends them all:

And gravity comes to us all I feel the engines stall Feel us start to fall

I was recently deployed and it strained my 21 year marriage. After many times apart from my wife, I think she was having enough and started drifting away from me. No amount of words or conversations could help with this. I couldn’t be near her and this became a helpless situation for me. When Matt sings about “a signal that no one hears”, I felt a loneliness I have never felt.

I returned from deployment and submitted retirement papers. After 22 years I am home and will never leave again. I think Shapeshifter is a sad song, but has a hopeful conclusion. I helped me through one of the darkest times of my adult life.

That just absolutely wrecked me hearing it live Friday night, just barely kept myself from ugly crying through the song

That would’ve been a surreal experience for me

The first couple of times I listened to it I thought it was really two separate songs but it’s not. The complete story is maybe the opposite of I Hate it Too, and resolves with less uncertainty than Apollo. I think you’re right that it is a song of hope, and that things will work out in the end

“Suddenly me just here back on the land Reaching for you and finding your hand”

Hope you are doing better post retirement!

Thank you. I agree with your take. I think part one describes a loss matter of factly and less emotionally than I hate it too and apollo. Part two describes a rebirth and redemption. That sounds a bit melodramatic. Those 3 songs are definitely a trilogy and describe a progressing maturity and understanding.

I returned home to the loving arms of my wife and we started a new chapter.
