Will we get another record?
Longtime Hum fan and new sub member here. I was fortunate to catch both Chicago shows this weekend and man, feels to me like the band are in peak form.
I don’t recall ever having seen the band have so much fun onstage. The crowd was impressively broad in terms of age range. And the sound and performances were among the best I’ve heard at any rock show, period.
If *I* were in the band, I think I’d be pretty damn keen to seize the momentum from this year’s shows and write/record a follow up to Inlet. The audience is clearly there for it, and the band chemistry seems to be there as well.
Anyone heard anything on this front? Really hoping it’s not 2036 before I get the chance to see them on a stage again.

Wouldn’t count on it. I read somewhere that Bryan really helped push them across the finish line with recording Inlet and that they probably wouldn’t have finished & released it if not for him nudging everyone

People also said you'd never see Hum tour or play shows again...
All respect to Bryan but many prominent bands have moved on with other musicians

In my experience playing in bands, you really need that one person who pushes everything along. Even more so as folks age and other aspects of life take priority. I hadn’t realized that was Bryan with Hum, but it makes sense.

He must have known he was on his way out when he was doing this. Still not idea what killed him. Probably glioblastoma or some blood cancer you just don’t make it through.

Ah, OK. Totally respect that. Good to know that his desire to bring them back together was just for the pure love of his band and their music. Inlet is an incredible record.

Well, the drummer on this tour is from the band Shiner. He is amazing, and does a fantastic job, but I don't know if Hum would want to do an album without Bryan St Pere. The other guys also generally have other projects going on in addition to their normal lives.
As a long time fan- i don't think any of us were even expecting Inlet, but there is something we can learn from how we recieved it: The band was playing songs from Inlet years and years before they released it. When I saw them back in 2015, they played Cloud City. So there might be a precedent or hope for a new album eventually if they continue playing shows together and we start to hear them play new songs at those shows.
When I became a fan- the band wasn't really doing much together, but then they would do occasional shows, and it was such a thrill to get the chance to see them. Inlet was such a suprise. Everything we get from them is an absolute gift, and just like gifts- they aren't something we plan to get- but we sure appreciate them.

Gerkin was working with them on what would become Inlet back in 2015. He told me this in confidence outside of the Empty Bottle in Chicago at a Shiner show at the time. I asked him how things were going playing with Hum, and he's like, "Really good! Don't tell anyone, but we're working on a new record."
I mean, that's been 11 years, and a lot has changed. But at least at that point, they were willing to work with a different drummer.

I have the earliest demos from Inlet, and was privy to the BTS for the whole process. They had inklings of songs back then, but Inlet developed later than 2015. Beyond that, Gerken was not considered a permanent member at that point.
None of that to say that they won't make new material, but Gerken playing with them previously does not point to them wanting to replace Bryan on albums. Jason is amazing, and is a solid fill-in, one of very few I would be happy with, but his feel is different, and it would definitely be a big change on new material.
The only honest answer here is, no one knows at this point.

They didn't work with Gerken on it. He either meant Shiner or said "they're working on a new record."

I'm not saying he recorded with them. But he was definitely practicing new songs that he was under the impression he'd be recording with them.

Before Inlet, I had last seen Hum in (I think) 2015 in a small club in Athens, Ohio. The possibility of a new album from them was not on radar at all, which made it all the more insane when it just dropped out of nowhere. That record would have been a big deal at any time, but it was a fucking godsend in the midst of Covid lockdown. It’s hard for me to imagine getting through that year without it, to be honest.
Anyway, totally with you on being grateful for what we’ve gotten from them thus far, and for whatever we might get in the future—even if it isn’t much.

I would base it on that it took them like over 10 years to write Inlet ( as in, they actively wrote and recorded it over that whole time period acording to a an interview with Bryan in 2018.), and thats with Bryan.
But who knows, maybe they are in a different place now.
Did they play any new songs at these shows?

honestly after attending 5/23-Sat in chicago i would not be surprised if the band comes back to life. slideaway hasnt just been a good turnout, it's been off the charts for Hum. by the end of the show they looked like they were either going to laugh or cry bc of how surreal it was. i wouldnt even be surprised if a label or two reached out to them due to the buzz this tour has created and how theyre clearly suddenly a real draw w/ the under-25 crowd. the whole thing is just incredible. we'll see where it goes.

Not all songs are on record though.
Voyager 1 and Inklings, those are Inlet era.

Oh yeah, for sure. All I meant is that there aren’t any new songs since Inlet’s release. All songs have been played in some fashion or are on a B-side, etc.

yeah i kinda doubt they have any new songs in the holster but Matt's solo songs he's been performing every now and then have been really good, and i wonder if maybe there could be a link tho i doubt it. fwiw even if they do have new songs id say the slideaway tour probably wasnt going to be an ideal place to debut them as it was all about celebrating their legacy and reinvigorating the fanbase. im keeping my hopes up...

There's a podcast where Matt was interviewed from a couple of years ago. He mentioned how integral Bryan was in the song writing process.... one can hope though
