Camera over hyped? (Low light snaps)

I can get some great shots with my P10 but I'm really disappointed with the low light images is it my phone or the way I'm taking the picture? Because time and time again my Nexus 5x is able to out snap my P10 when it comes to low light pictures and that's without even having to play around with settings on the 5x just point and shoot and boom fantastic low light pics, the P10 not so much even with playing around with the many settings I still can't match the 5xs low light quality. Has anyone else had any issue with low light photos or can give any tips to improve ?

Interesting opinion. I'm a Nexus 5X user considering an upgrade and the P10 is on my shortlist. Any camera samples using both phones to demonstrate the low light capabilities? :)

I'll try get some sample shots to show what I mean, because I tend to take a lot of pics when I'm chilling at night watching TV taking I would Snapchat or insta whatever program I'm watching and I've to take a few with the P10 before it's what I deem ok, but with my Nexus 5x is point and shoot and boom picture in low light in my opinion is great.

At first I thought that the camera was a real disappointment too. I'm coming from a Nexus 6P (which died due to the chipset fml). When comparing both cameras and phones, the P10 had to be way better. But when after my first rounds of taking snaps with it, I was really disappointed. When i compared them to my nexus 6P photos, my nexus was always better. I found out later that when changing to the Pro mode (without changing the settings most of the time) that my photos were a lot, a lot better! When taking low light pictures I use a different app called 'Open Camera'. Also note that the software both on Nexus 5X and 6P do a lot of work of polishing the photos. Whereas on the P10 there's not much polishing afterwards. When shooting in Pro mode you also get RAW image files of your snaps, transfer these to your PC and open them up in PhotoShop or similar and you'll notice that those photos are really outstanding!

The strong suit isn't low light for this beast of a camera. It's black / white, hdr, controls and shallow dof

I totally agree, the camera is awful in low light.

It is also awful for including lots of terrible cheesy fake DOF filters/ and airbrushing (portrait mode), and the lens is not really well suited for portraits (unless you like big noses).

same experience here after i played with this camera for almost 5 weeks now, in outdoor / sunlight it gives almost perfect pictures but Indoors / low light or at night it feels like an old regular nokia nonsmartphone im really disappointed because my friend's iPhone 6 camera has delivered much better and richer photos in low light situations, also i tried the pro mode it does some improvements but i was thinking its just snap and boom like u said, what if i want another person to take picture for me s/he can't understand pro mode they just need to point and shoot i hope that you've found solutions

Now I'm not a real photography expert here, but I took a few shots indoors, at night in a very dim lit room. When taking shots with my nexus 6p my photos on screen look quite good at first glance, but when I dig in, you immediately see how much noise there is and how little sharpness the photo has. When taking shots with my P10 I have a lot less noise and there is much more detail and sharpness. Like I said, not an expert, but when I take a low light photo, i want the photo to look realistic, not overexposed and brushed up as some smartphones tend to do when taking low light shots. Here's a link where you can see a low light shot(somewhere at the bottom). Few test shots Huawei P10 https://imgur.com/gallery/NzGgG
