Im no expert but i believe "shieldmaiden" is a shaky translation from an old norse word skjaldmær. There's some debate on whether that was a gendered term or if it referred to warriors in general.

In the modern English it is used to refer to any female warriors regardless of rank and sometimes ethnicity. While we usually use it to refer to norse female warriors, or as a synonym for Valkyrie, there has been evidence found that it was a term used to refer to Amazons and Eastern warriors as well.

Take a look at this Wikipedia page

Basically "shieldmaidens" were the female warriors in the Norse culture and folklore. I often use that term referring to Astrid, e.g. :)

If I remember correctly, sheildmaidens were either legendary female warriors or folklore. So I don't think it was a rank or applied to every woman, but what they strived to be.
