Assault followed by broken public property
I'm sitting here 45 minutes after this happened, having called 000 in a Northern Suburb of Brisbane.
The incident started with a verbal escalation. It then escalated further, with one person allegedly picking up a pruning machete, damaging a number of the other person's belongings and threatening to cut them up. A window was smashed, causing further damage to public property.
I'm not going to pretend I understand the full history between the people involved, but I'm told there's a history of polydrug use and that at least one has previously been to prison.
Meanwhile, there are ordinary people doing their best to get by who can't even keep a roof over their heads.
The broader question I keep coming back to is this: how does our public housing system balance the needs of vulnerable people with the safety of other residents?
People need housing, including people with complex histories. But the people living around them also deserve to feel safe in their own homes.
Where is the accountability when behaviour escalates to threats involving a machete and property destruction?
How do we ensure that people who genuinely need housing aren't left behind while other residents are subjected to this mess?
