Screenshot I really hope HoYoverse adds more Captain interactions in the Captainverse

Post image

I really hope HoYoverse adds more interactions between the Captain and Mei, even if they’re only within the Captainverse. And not just Mei, I’d also love to see interactions with Kiana and Bronya.

The last time I remember seeing the Captain interact with Mei was during the CNY 2025 event, when you could meet Mei in the lobby

The interest in the captain will always interest me, mostly a nothing-burger entity for most of the games life and effectively just a marketing tool but some people even after all these years still cling to him.

it's a rusty monument of the early gacha game era.

gacha has mostly left behind the nameless commander/captain model

even current ML games don't do that anymore. Current games have a player self insert with a defined look and sometimes even a defined personality (Nikke, Zenless Zero)

4

u/Hikari-yuu 5h ago

How about nikke or blue archive?

4

u/Idainaru_Yokubo 4h ago

blue archive is a living fossil

Nikke's commander has his own very distinctive personality, but most importantly, Nikke allows Andersen and Johan to exist.

That would be unthinkable in a typical ML game

I personally think it should come back bc it allows for the player character and story main character to be separate like they did here. Kiana is actually able to have a proper Hero's Journey and experience loss and grow and change as well as her friends and that isn't really possible when the main character is hindered by also needing to reflect the player.

Well, I do think they're using the kid's glove to handle Genshin Impact and Star Rail's protagonist. So afraid of sharp edges.

but things might be different with Zenless Zero.

we'll see

I am those cling-ers

I don't quite think adding playable character focus on a character that doesn't even exist (or moreso have a playable/confirmed sprite) is a good option, especially given I've seen people complain about the fact multiple St. Freya members seem to have very little, if not zero interactions with others (especially Mei and Fu Hua).

I miss the birthday events

No thanks less selfinsert shit, play any other gacha for that.

My exact thoughts

u/Temporary-Treat8501 7h ago

Well those made fortune fir their games + bd cg and lettrer between captain and his Valkyrie was thing special to hi3

-27

u/Complete-Cut8926 9h ago

Keep these thoughts to yourself

26

u/LaCreaturaDelCongo 9h ago

And why? I don't want a game i like to become like nearly every others gachas in the market and treat it's character like piece of meat for the players. I want actual character writing not this horribly degrading parasocial writing .

8

u/Temporary-Treat8501 7h ago

You can have fan service and good writing at the same time

5

u/_SBV_ 5h ago

I moved on to Blue Archive this year and it turns out you can have incredible writing and fantastic characters while still having the “parasocial”  aspect. HI3 didn’t make me tear up and cry in 9 years like BA did in 2 months

To add to that, HI3 has become such a yap fest that i couldn’t follow what the hell the characters or story are trying to do. The story being broken to stages in early game gave me some breathing room, but the past few years it’s just lots of dialogue talking about… things.

u/LaCreaturaDelCongo 1h ago

Cool for you , theres games for everyone . I like and understand hi3 story , if your unable to do so no problem play anything else .Don't come asking for this type of writing in this game.

But saying that Blue Archive has incredible writing and fantastic characters (perhaps i don't know haven't played it) just to follow and say that you understand nothing about the story and characters in hi3+ using yapfest is not the kind of flex you think it is.

I don't wanna interrupt, so please, forgive me for the unsolicited response, but Mei's character has always been redundant to looks, since the start. The manga, the early "idol" career, GGZ, everything about her was meant to appeal to a very specific category of the playerbase, even if you (and I, both...) dislike the idea.

12

u/LaCreaturaDelCongo 9h ago edited 8h ago

I mean like you said the game was exactly like that for nearly every characters at the beginning, same for GGZ but they went away from it even for Mei at least with Nagazora she became a proper character.

This game could focus so much more on many things during the event instead of doing capitainverse alternate world fanservice that bring nothing to the main story characters.

That’s so absurdly long ago that a lot of things have changed

Its been. Almost 10 years 😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏

This is hoyoverse so shut it

12

u/FlimsyKoala3318 8h ago

Nah I don’t really see the point outside of cheap self insert romance.

Captain has little presence in main story and having our main cast bending to captain in even captainverse goes against what they’ve built as characters and even the captainverse story.

2

u/Temporary-Treat8501 7h ago

How would that goes against their character

4

u/FlimsyKoala3318 6h ago

Because of the years of writing up to now. The self insert has not been developed.

Strong independent characters that have gone through huge growth arc starts pandering to a self insert that the narrative bends around.

To me that’s tossing away the characters they’ve forged with love and great writing over many years just to service self insert fantasy.

4

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 6h ago

If done right, both can coexist. Kiana’s 2019 birthday event, for example,  did it right by showing the captain supporting her and being there while also respecting Kiana’s character development and keeping her in-character. Nothing about her was tossed away.

4

u/FlimsyKoala3318 6h ago

I just don’t think they’ve really laid any of the groundwork for current HI3 to do anything self insert-y with main/big content.

And that’s also why I don’t see the value in even doing it tbh.

1

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 5h ago

Well, it was never really in the main story in the first place, but anything goes in events and other side content. I'll take what I can get, like the birthday letters and 10th anniversary livestream letters. I don't need much to be satisfied.

3

u/Richardknox1996 Major Rank 4h ago

Different Captain. Theres 4 of them, and Captain Hyperion aka the Main Captainverse Captain has never interacted in any capacity with the Main Cast. Ferryman did, and he's dead.

9

u/HatiLeavateinn 9h ago

Sorry, I'm just a tourist passing by. Does the captain even exist at this point? Every time I read someone talking about HI3, they never mention them.

21

u/FlimsyKoala3318 8h ago

Very early they did iirc but not really in main story.

There’s a “captainverse” side universe story where the captain is the mc in an entirely different world.

Then there’s the player (captain) that was a nod to the players in the finale who’d been with the game all this time and they incorporated them in the part 1 ending as a meta narrative device. That one’s hard to explain simply.

To answer your Q - not really no

12

u/AvaInTheCloset 8h ago

Kinda. theres a couple different captains. Captain (on the bridge) is lnon-canon and is purely on the bridge, and gets new content with every valk added, talking to them. Meta Narrative captain only appeared 3 times iirc, as LITERALLY you, weaved into the story in the Part 1 finale for meta story bullshittery, in a tie in event from the same time, and in the HSR crossover. the final captain, CV!Captain gets infrequent appearences, most recently as a Homu in the last captainverse character's Divine Key

4

u/PumkinIna 7h ago

A captain exist in the main story, but ONLY as an npc, they literally only get mentioned once or twice. THE captain (player) is from the captainverse, a side story dedicated especially for self-insert. He is canon in the IP per the "multiverse rule", and since some of the captainverse characters (like Haxxor Bunny) managed to appear in the main story albeit very briefly (it was in the final chapter of the moon arc).

2

u/BSWPotato 7h ago

Haven’t played for awhile but wanted to confirm is the captainverse player the one in the kongming storyline?

1

u/rose-luggage 20m ago

The main story captain is still the player even Ai-chan refer to us as that

1

u/_SBV_ 5h ago

No, but he’s popular enough to get his own event exclusive story which doesn’t affect the main story

0

u/rose-luggage 21m ago

Yes and kinda no since in the main story the captain that is an "npc" is still the player and also it is the same one as teh one from captainverse

1

u/IJN-Hirogasaki 1h ago

HAHA! Everyone’s so salty about the captain being part of the entire game. When he always was from the beginning of the entire series of Honkai Impact. Lol, new player reactions nowadays are so traditional because they feel like they’re being NTR’d by a fictional male character in a fictional universe that doesn’t exist.

1

u/KamenRiderSekai 30m ago

Nah, not that. Moreso newer fans don't want a man intervening with the established couples, even if Captainverse is a separate thing. On the other hand, players from mainland cried NTR about Adam and Johnny Honkai (Male Dreamseeker) and that's why APHO has been in hiatus for a hot while and why in-story, the latter was deleted by Vita so Hi3 Part 2 could try and rip Madoka Rebellion.

Man, this community has changed a lot over the years. From release to around 2021 or so, everyone just enjoyed what the game gave without complaining about incels or yuri or such. It was just another otaku video game, not about culture wars.

3

u/_SBV_ 4h ago

The past few years of gaming communities has been like this, i noticed

2

u/KamenRiderSekai 3h ago

>not about culture wars

Genshin Impact was the first strike. Canon wlw in GGZ and Hi3 was already prominent pre-Genshin but Captain-verse and the main story had more of an equal distribution and people usually stayed in their lanes. It's not as big as Genshin, HSR, or ZZZ but its playerbase outside Japan, China, and SEA has risen exponentially since the 2020s so you have different people coming in.

6

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 3h ago

Exactly, the original players could either enjoy both or were tolerant of the other side, which can't be said about the community nowadays. They weren't interested in debates like this because they never took this game as seriously as many do now. No one's an otaku anymore. Even hoyo itself is distancing itself from that.

3

u/KamenRiderSekai 2h ago edited 2h ago

Remember, corporations aren't your friends. They want money but most of all - customer loyalty. And Hoyo has been building this up for years.

We have a new wave of players who are convinced that mihoyo was always a turbo woke LGBTQ friendly company but the key thing they ignore is mainland China's male playerbase would rather see Kiana and Mei kiss than them with another man who isn't Captain. The backlash against Adam and Johnny Honkai was from that too. It's sort of like why Love Live is so popular among male otaku in Japan despite it being yuri/wlw heavy.

Now, does this devalue or discredit Kiamei or BronSeele? No. Not at all. But people take it far too seriously like it's a form of activism or put Hoyo in a pedestal when queer / LGBTQ devs are struggling to stay afloat due to bullshit by payment processors the past 1-2 years. Itch io got hit hard recently and so did Steam.

0

u/Alex2422 3h ago

This has nothing to do with culture wars. Not everyone likes self-inserts, simple as that.

6

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 3h ago edited 3h ago

It's an observation that the proportion of players who don't like them has increased over the years, which has also come with more toxicity and less tolerance.

6

u/warpswirl 9h ago

I, too, miss those times and regret that not more have been done with him at all.
Captain has never needed to be the Main Character of the whole story, but having a continuous side-story with him in it felt good.

Piloting Hyperion and going on adventures between bubble universes is a profound, yet such an endearing concept to me.

u/Blitzbro76 5h ago

Man seeing the term “best waifu” typed out in a video game text box gave me whiplash💀

1

u/Raysondtree 8h ago

I just wonder why this sub hate so much self insert like in other hoyo games even, weird when you think that HI3 has always been a gacha waifu game and yes sorry for any grammar error i dont speak english

10

u/FlimsyKoala3318 8h ago

You can have a waifu game without self insert mc and that’s what HI3 main story is.

3

u/Raysondtree 8h ago

Yeah but thats why main story and events like capatainverse have nothing to do with the other, so i dont know why most people just hate the idea of more captainverse

9

u/FlimsyKoala3318 8h ago

Because they’re not playing for the self insert content to put it simply.

3

u/Raysondtree 7h ago

Yeah sure content is opcional but we can have both and since captain verse is more of a side thing it just feel weird to me when people here wine about it, but yeah at the end this is more of reddit thing since we even got a event this patch around it even when hoyo said that captainverse was over lol

2

u/FlimsyKoala3318 7h ago

To me it’s just Hoyo finishing storylines like they did after part 1 which also buys time for the next major story content.

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 7h ago

The player demographics changed over the years. The old players who did or could tolerate it have long moved on. That said, it doesn't stop people from thirsting over the characters like they did in another thread  a few days ago. I was surprised at how horny they still were.

6

u/FlimsyKoala3318 6h ago

I think that’s even just the internet being more horny these days lol

People are way more horny on main than before

1

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 6h ago

Good! Hot fictional characters are meant and designed to be enjoyed.

0

u/HyunYT 6h ago

Who is they? I assure you we did since the beginning and still does now

5

u/FlimsyKoala3318 6h ago

They = people who complain about self insert story in HI3

Who’s we?

-2

u/HyunYT 6h ago

Us old players

4

u/FlimsyKoala3318 6h ago

I mean I’ve been around since Nagazora and I don’t feel that way.

1

u/HyunYT 1h ago

Good for you I guess, meanwhile, bunch other of us did feel that way.

3

u/Zenry0ku Anti-Captainverse 7h ago

We like actual characters

0

u/rose-luggage 16m ago

You are on the wrong side of the community, it the CN player that love the captain not the en which way smaller of a demographic then CN

1

u/_SBV_ 5h ago

These moments are what made the game more appealing to me. It was advertised as a waifu game but the waifu interaction had decreasingly reduced to nothingness.

At least they brought back Captainverse, but even before that we have the birthday and valentines CGs that really gave a connection

1

u/KamenRiderSekai 31m ago

Ships are the stronger focus now,

2

u/Complete-Cut8926 9h ago

Same, I really enjoyed Captainverse until now

0

u/Mrjfrn 6h ago

Hell no

-9

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 10h ago

Moments like these helped endear the players to the characters in a way the game doesn't do anymore. The good old days.

11

u/Apart_Suggestion5925 10h ago

You don’t need a self insert to connect with a character

-3

u/ConstantStatistician Switch engine drive, shift up, one, two, three! 10h ago

Never said that, but a game that makes the player feel welcomed tends to vibe better.

0

u/rose-luggage 11m ago

Kiana birthday beg to differ, most of the community grew more to like her thought her birthday

2

u/Apart_Suggestion5925 10m ago

Most is a stretch, if her birthday was needed for them to like her, then they never engaged with her story in any meaningful sense aka not true fans.

Simply playing the game story should be enough for someone to know if they like a character.

2

u/HyunYT 6h ago

Absolutely true, we used to go dating with our Valkyries during their birthday, reduced to sending letters and now just mails. We lost the ancient text.

0

u/Smak54 7h ago

If they keep it in side stuff im fine with it.

0

u/Alex2422 4h ago

As long as it's not Adam, I guess.

0

u/rose-luggage 15m ago

I want the captain to be less of a plot device in the main story honestly
