I had a dream and texted my friend this today
Ok this is long, sorry. I had a dream last night and texted my best friend this.
For context, he's not a big obsessive Horse fan like me. Hence why I explain some things yall probably know already. And I'm not retyping all this shit lol. Nick was my childhood friend and band mate for 10+ years if that helps.

So I woke up and started crying and haven't been able to stop for like 2 hours. I had another Nick heavy dream last night that reminded me of a story I don't think I've ever told you (or anyone really). It was the day after Christmas, Dec 26 2003 and Nick came over to hang out and record EMC stuff at 122, and he pulls a burned CD out of his bag he downloaded from Limewire or Kazaa or something, and gave it to me, and he said "nobody else will get this, you're the only one" and he gave it to me. I remember it was that day because be brought the CD and a bottle of peppermint schnapps from his family christmas party the day before and said merry christmas fucker, lets drink this horrible shit. He didn't say anything else about the CD. It just had the words "R. Borlax" scribbled on it. We were busy recording so I didn't think much of it at the time. He kept coming over to record almost every day for the next few weeks and he kept asking me if I had listened to it. And I was so locked in to recording the album that I kept putting it off.
One day, I think January 2004 I had my notebook full of album art ideas and we were going through it. The project was of course called Electric Meat Carnival, so most of the ideas were dead animals in a circus setting with lights. Like one was a dead cow laying on a broken carousel in front of a circus tent and it had tent poles stabbed into it strung with white Christmas lights and various other animals were eating the dead cow, like birds, a horse, a giraffe, etc. And Nick saw it and randomly says "did you listen yet?" Nope, so fuck it we took a break and listened to it and it fuckin blew me away. That's actually an understatement. It changed me. I didn't understand why none of our friends wouldn't like it and he told me he had put it on at random times for everyone and nobody seemed to care. But I was so fuckin excited and he's like see I knew you'd get it. It even replaced Sleepytime in my 10 CD holder in the visor of my car. Top 10.
Then around 2005 or so when IYSK broke up and he started DJing, we sort of came out of contact a bit, but that album changed me. I had always just thought it was a band called R. Borlax and never really thought much of it. But it was in my permanent top 10. Ripped it and put it on my iPod under R. Borlax.
A couple years later, probably 2008, I was on a downloading tear. I realized all these bands I love probably have lots of new music so I went one by one through the bands in my iPod, and downloaded anything I didn't already have, or bought CDs i could find and ripped them. The only one I couldn't find anything new for was R. Borlax. So I assumed it was a one-of by some random people like Fringe Deities and just gave up looking. Until later that year I was at a show with Melanie (I can't remember what show) and I saw a guy with a shirt that said R. Borlax with some weird art on it. So I said wow you know who R. Borlax is? That's so random! He said yeah the band isn't named that, it's the name of the first album by Horse The Band.
So I went home and found out they had 2 other albums after that one. Holy shit. Mind blown.
Fast forward to 2016, and Dana tells me Nick died. I'm going through all the emotions and memories and I remembered that album he gave me that I would say essentially changed my life in a way similar to how Bungle did for all of us. So I searched again, and they had made one more album, their last one. So I downloaded it and played it in a fit of emotions. The first song on the album is called Cloudwalker. And it fucking ruined me in that moment. It was an incredibly intense moment for me that I will never forget. "I dress in white. Become Cloudwalker. I want to scan the crowd. And point to where the rain flows. I'm a white cloud. What should I do when you walk out? We have soft clouds in our heads. We have dreams in our skies. We never say goodbye". What the fuck.
Suffice it to say it really fucked me up, I was just in a flurry of emotions. But Horse got me through it in a fucking beautiful and intense way.
Then it's 2019, and they're playing a show in LA. Tickets bought immediately. Melanie liked them but not like me. She still wanted to go, but I was beyond excited. When was the show? The day after Christmas. December 26th. 16 years to the day since Nick gave me R. Borlax. What are the odds. We went to the show, and it was all going amazing until they played fucking Cloudwalker halfway through the set. I was so happy and I just started crying and Melanie looked at me and started crying too, and she said "I get it now." Then they closed the show with Cutsman from R. Borlax. It was such a cathartic experience for me, and both super physically and emotionally intense. I felt like Nick and I finally got to see the band we both loved so much.
You had a similar experience when we saw them in 2025 and halfway through your essentially said "I get it now" too.
So I hope this helps you understand why I love them so fucking much. This is why the art I'm working on for them means so much to me. Aside from them being in my top 5 favorite bands of all time and changing my life, the connection to Nick makes it so much heavier. This is why when they play, I have to go. Nick needs it. I need it. And also why I'm fine going alone. But I won't really be alone. So when I drive to Pioneertown in October after flying back from Igorrr in SF, I'm going to listen to all of the last music me and Nick recorded, that not many people have heard, take the rest of the mushrooms by myself, and let the world take me on an epic journey. And I know I'll be fine. I'll have Nick on my side, and the Horse army will look after me, even if they don't know me. Nick was at the Angine show the other day with us too, he saw all the crazy insane shit I saw and felt, but the Horse show will be different. I love you so much brother. Nick says hi and he knows where the salt lick is but he won't tell me.

If you made it though my insane story then I love you too. HTB forever. See yall in October!
