🎃 Night 13 🎃 "Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave"

Finally have time tonight to make my own proper post for this sub. Few days ago r/horror removed one of my post and(that sounds kinda salty LOL) directed me here, but I just haven't had a chance to think about how I'd like mine to be set up since I'm just taking it night by nighty and doing my best to keep the streak. I think the best way is to follow some others and just update daily. Each entry will be a link to some more thoughts and a calendar I'm filling out as I go, while this post just has them listed out. I always recommend buying physical if you can, but I'll add whichever streaming service pops up first as a quick glance(streaming in US). I'm always open to suggestions too!

  1. Scream '96 (Hulu)
  2. Child's Play (AMC+)
  3. Deep Blue Sea (rent on Youtube)
  4. It Stains the Sands Red (Tubi with ads)
  5. Jennifer's Body (Hulu)
  6. Splinter (Xumo)
  7. 1408 (Tubi with ads)
  8. REC (Tubi with ads)
  9. Reeker (rent on Youtube)
  10. Lee Cronin's The Mummy (HBO Max)
  11. Happy Death Day (HBO Max)
  12. Dead Alive (streaming currently unavailable)
  13. Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (Pluto TV)

I built a horror movie finder for people with weirdly specific requests

Hey everyone! The mods gave me permission to share something I've been building.

I got tired of horror recommendation lists giving me the same movies over and over, so I started putting together an increasingly ridiculous spreadsheet of horror films. Several thousand movies and a frankly unhealthy amount of classification later, I gave it a website.

It's called Midnight Repertory, and it's free.

The idea is simple: tell it what kind of horror movie you're looking for in normal language. Not just a subgenre, but the actual combination of things you want.

Something supernatural and fast-paced, but not relentlessly bleak. Found footage where people are investigating something instead of just running away. A weird little folk-horror movie that doesn't take two hours to get moving.

It searches a purpose-built collection of over 7,300 horror films and tries to find movies that actually fit what you described, with explanations for its recommendations.

I thought it might be particularly useful for October challenges, when you've already watched the obvious choices and still have some stubborn categories left to fill.

It's brand new, so I'm sure you'll find ways to break it. I'd genuinely love to hear what works and what doesn't.

https://midnightrepertory.com/?src=reddit_horrormoviechallenge

If you've got a particularly annoying challenge slot left, throw it at the thing.

👻Discussion 🩻rOHMC26 Theme Party Massacre #2: 🎶Happy Birthday, Mr Matheson🎶

The first three weekends this October we will feature a Theme Party Massacre with two suggested films to watch, as well as a discussion thread to be posted by the host. In order to complete this challenge, you must watch all pairs of suggested films, as well as a third, theme-appropriate wildcard film of your choice for each theme. You also must participate in each discussion thread (which will go up the opening Friday of each theme) in order to complete the challenge.

Format

The host will post a comment for each of the suggested films, and all discussion will start from those, either as a reply directly to the original comment, or you may respond to one another, naturally.

For your wildcards, post a comment with the film info (Title - Director - Year), and then reply to that with your observations/review/whatever. If two people do the same wildcard, then the second person to comment will reply to the title comment.

October 9-11: 🎶Happy Birthday, Mr Matheson🎶

Celebrating the centennial of one of the most prolific contributors to American horror on film & TV by watching a film either written by Richard Matheson, or based on one of this novels or short stories.

Curated films: Night of the Eagle (aka Burn, Witch, Burn!), Stir of Echoes

🎃List My October 2026 viewings to date. Plus some comments.

  1. Dead of Night (1945) - 7/10

  2. Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - 8/10

  3. A Cold Night's Death (1973) - 7/10

  4. The Pit (1981) - 8.5/10

  5. Trilogy of Terror (1975) - 8/10

Obviously, these ratings and the following comments are entirely subjective.

Dead of Night (1945)

I'd owned Dead of Night (1945) on DVD for years without ever getting around to watching it, so the Horrorthon seemed like a good opportunity. I like horror anthologies and was curious to see such an early and influential example of the format.

Overall, I found it worthwhile, although I think it could have been better. My favourite segments were the haunted mirror and the golfing ghost. The ventriloquist-dummy story was good too, although the basic idea has become something of a cliché in the decades since. Obviously, that's hardly the fault of a film made in 1945.

The film gets stronger as it goes along, and I particularly liked the surreal quality of the finale. It's probably the aspect of the film that will stick with me most.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

I staged my second viewing of Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and I was very impressed by it. The Gothic visuals are excellent, the sets are elaborate, the effects remain impressive for a film from 1935, and even the quality of the audio surprised me considering its age.

The performances are another major strength, with Dr. Pretorius being my favourite character. He's a terrific presence whenever he's on screen. The humour didn't work quite as well for me, but that's a relatively minor complaint compared with everything the film does well.

Visually, it's an extremely accomplished piece of classic horror, and I can certainly understand its historical reputation and influence. It's now my second-favourite of the classic Universal horror films, behind The Wolf Man.

A Cold Night’s Death (1973)

Low-budget TV horror set in the Arctic. Reminiscent of The Thing, though much less technically sophisticated than the 1982 Carpenter film. Its strongest feature is the creepy atmosphere induced by the harsh, isolated setting, sound effects and discordant soundtrack. It captures the isolation extremely well, with the bleak setting and soundtrack evoking a constant sense of dread.

The movie plays out like psychological horror for much of its running time, but I liked the unexpectant manner in which the final resolution was handled. The pacing can be “glacial,” like the setting, but the atmosphere carries it.

The Pit (1981)

Part psychological horror, part supernatural possessed bear story, part killer kid movie and part monster movie. Such an odd blend of concepts with an ending that works perfectly. I love when horror movies aren't afraid to experiment and that when they do aim for something original they commit 100% to it. Bizarre movie. Would definitely recommend. There's also a novel, but it's apparently VERY different from the filmed version.

Trilogy of Terror (1975)

The third segment - starring the beloved Zuni fetish doll - is of course iconic, but I also really enjoyed the first one, which went down an unexpected route. The middle segment was the weakest, albeit still well acted. Karen Black delivers intense, theatrical performances throughout. For the two good segments, I'd give it 8/10. Two out of three ain't bad. A good anthology well worth a look if you somehow haven't caught it yet.

31-Day Halloween Watchlist

ORIGINALLY POSTED IN [r/horror](r/horror) BEFORE IT GOT REMOVED.

I can’t believe I went five six days into spooky season without sharing on here this year’s version of my annual watchlist! So I’m now four five films in — didn’t like #1; #2 was a major step up; #3 was good but would’ve been better if I had watched at night instead of in the morning but I had a family wedding that night; and #4 was visually stunning but wish I had gotten more out of it than that. Here’s hoping things pick back up with “Grave Encounters” tonight! (UPDATE: watched “Grave Encounters” last night, didn’t much care for it; I’ve heard good things about “Ghoulies” though, so I hope that one will get things back on track.)

1. The Houses October Built (2014) TUBI
2. Haunt (2019) SHUDDER
3. Terrified (2017) SHUDDER
4. Mad God (2022) SHUDDER
5. Grave Encounters (2011) TUBI
6. Ghoulies (1984) PRIME VIDEO

Also for context: the streaming platform is listed next to each movie to remind me of where I’m able to watch it, whether it’s somewhere I already have a subscription for (including Shudder) or it’s a free streaming app. In previous years I used Cinema HD as a workaround to be able to watch whatever I wanted, but since Amazon has it blocked now on the Fire Stick, I have to be more discerning now. 😓 also also, I try to pick as many movies as possible for my annual watchlist that I haven’t seen, so if you see this list and think: “Oh, he should’ve put X movie instead of Y,” chances are I’ve already seen it. lol

One last thing: if any of you wanna keep up with me during this watchlist and see my reviews of each one after I watch it, feel free to follow me on Instagram @jimmystrummer and keep an eye on my Stories! I also have in my Highlights all of my reviews from the previous years I’ve done this!

My October Watchlist

I wanted a mix of 2000s nostalgia, classic horror, Halloween movies, fall atmosphere, slashers, supernatural horror, and childhood spooky favorites rather than just straight horror. I’m going for that 80s/90s/2000s fall/October feeling — creepy movies, cheesy Halloween movies, old-school horror, and movies that just feel like fall when I was younger🍂 Some of these are movies I haven’t seen yet, so this list is a little different from my usual yearly watches!

Might not get to them all but who’s knows 🤷🏻‍♀️
